Actress-writer-indie darling Greta Gerwig has landed the starring role in How I Met Your Dad, CBS? in-the-works spin-off of How I Met Your Mother, TVLine has learned.

Gerwig will play the soulmate-searching Sally, a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she?s going in life. She has just figured out that she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year. A break-up is inevitable, but Sally will find a solid circle of support in her friends and family, who are often too willing to give ?good? advice that can backfire badly. Meanwhile, Sally must filter out the input and decide what?s best for her.

In addition to starring in HIMYD, Gerwig ? whose film credits include No Strings Attached, Arthur, Greenberg and, most recently, Frances Ha (for which she earned a Golden Globe nod) ? will also serve as a producer and, if the project gets a green light, an occasional writer.

Up All Night?s Emily Spivey penned the pilot with HIMYM creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays. The show is set to shoot in New York if it gets ordered to series.

from the sound of it i am not certain if this particular project will be any good, but if you look at the original pitch for HIMYM it didnt look to promising either.... until they cast the people they did anyway.

CBS has added another cast member to their upcoming How I Met Your Mother spin-off. Smash alum Krysta Rodriguez has been cast in How I Met Your Dad as a series regular.

Rodriguez will play Juliet, Sally?s best friend. She is described as being sexy and flamboyant and runs a highly successful fashion blog. She joins a cast which is being led by Frances Ha?s Greta Gerwig. Newcomer Drew Tarver also stars.

How I Met Your Dad is not a straight spin-off of How I Met Your Mother but ?shares the same creative DNA? and tells the story for a female point of view. The comedy will follow Sally (Greta Gerwig), who, though considering breaking up with her Husband, finds support in her close-knit group of friends. The comedy is being produced by 20th Century Fox Television, with Pam Fryman, Emily Spivey, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas serving as executive producers.

I am all for a spin off.  I like HIMYM.  However, they really need to change the title.  HIMYM was not really about how Ted met his wife.  Maybe one or two hints in the earlier seasons and more later.  They should have called it "How I dated dozens of women, had parties, did drugs in college, and basically lived at a bar until I met your mother".  I haven't seen the last two episodes, but so far from what I have seen, he has not met her yet in the main storyline (there were brief scenes showing them together, but he has not met her yet in the main storyline).

Are they keeping the same actress for the mom?

The main way I could see this working is for example ....

Some of the failed relationships TED has turn out to show up on the new show ... and talk about ted to her.  Where she may say... why can't I find a guy like that?  ...  Then we also find out that she also knows Barney..... and Possibly also add some stir that she was friends with Robin while she was in Japan...

Though I am sure ... the writers are not probably going for that angle...

and the last spinoff is..  How we made it our first year together...the story includes BOB and MEG...

As a massive HIMYM fan, I don't know if the new characters will be likeable. I guess we'll see.

The final season of HIMYM was terrible and I really don't have much interest in a spin-off. It was very similar to the last season of Friends, whereby all the characters were simply caricatures of their former selves - all their worst qualities were exaggerated to the point of tedium. By the end I found all the characters to be thoroughly unlikeable.

The best thing they could do would be to do something entirely different. If it's just the same themes told from a female perspective it's going to get old real quick.

?How I Met Your Dad? Not Going Forward At CBS: What Went Wrong? What?s Next?

"CBS? option on HIMYD expires today, so, unless a miracle happens, the project is dead at CBS. 20th TV, which has been very bullish on the pilot, plans to shop it to other networks, and I hear it already has received interest. I hear the studio is looking to make a decision over the next week, with executives confident that HIMYD would go to series somewhere."
