Hard Drive recommendations for the PS4

Recommended Posts

I know that there was a thread for this, went though past topics and couldn't find it.

I want to upgrade my PS4's now, while I don't have much of anything up there.

I would prefer at least a 2TB hard drive.

My main concern, does a hybrid drive give enough of a performance boost to warrant the purchase.

Samsung Spin Point & WD Caviar Black are 2 choices I've narrowed down to. If there is anything better please let me know.

Thank you.

Well the black series will probably provide the best performance.

I wonder about heat though. I'm not sure how much air is moving around the location of the hard drive. I havent looked for any tests done on heat when using a 7200rpm drive. I wouldnt think it would be a problem, but I would probably seek out info on that if its around before buying. Maybe soemone else has already done it and can share.

The tests that have been performed showed that Hybrid drives did offer a boost, but its not huge, so I wouldnt go out of my way to get one unless you find a good deal that puts them really close to the pricing of 7200rpm drives

From a reliability perspective, I am a fan of the Samsung Spinpoint series. I have used many of them in laptops and the 3.5" variety in my desktops. They usually run cooler then say the WD Blacks as well.

Don't go with Samsung. I've had 2 drives die on me in the last 5 months, and although that is personal experience there are a large number of reports online about their reliability too. Go with Seagate or WD and take the longer warranty with them. It won't save your data but at least they'll replace it if it dies.

This DF article might help you decide (tested on PS3 but I'm sure most of it still holds true for PS4).

It was mentioned somewhere, by someone on this site, that solid state didn't give the boost he was looking for,

that being said, I've replaced hard drives in my old ps3's with ease, replacing them with 7200 rpm ones I bought from ebay, it certainly 'felt' a little faster, but nothing to write home about

The sizes you want I'm not sure the ps4 can handle, but then again, I could very well be wrong, I've read some people's brag about 1tb SSD and HDD drives (in other forums,) and having no problems but as I haven't tried it, I cannot confirm it.

Fair enough, but I would remind everyone that there are poor reviews for most of the hard drive models out there, including the WD black series.

I do agree on the warranty bit, they offer one of the longest warranty periods.

Didn't realize that Seagate owns the Samsung Spinpoint division now

Kinda makes me want to shy away from this now... Seagate hasn't been good in shape for years now...

Yeah it's a very subjective point but I honestly think there is some major cost cutting or lack of quality control when it comes to Samsung.

**I should note that the drives that died on me were prior to the merger, so I can't comment on any recent HDDs.

Good and bad in all dude, nature of the beast

I've got an ancient 40bg quantum fireball (came out of my old 1 gig Athlon that ran windows me) and it runs like a clock (last time I checked, last week)

SanDisk and Maxxtor aren't terrible, but I've not had one of them die (yet)

I got the Seagate 1TB SSHD and tbh it doesn't feel all that faster than the 5000rpm drive.
My advice, go with a 2TB 7200rpm one or larger. Heat isn't an issue - hot air from the drive gets blown out the rear vents.

I have done some temps of the built in hard drive and they seem fine, but I wasnt sure if putting something like a 7200rpm drive would overwelm the cooling.

Even though the PS4 generally runs hot, it shouldn't be a problem.

Those big open vents at the back do a great job of fanning the heat from inside the machine, so long as they arnt blocked and ventilation is fine, putting in the 7200rpm wouldn't pose any heat problems. :)

It should be pointed out that while the PS4 doesn't take full advantage of an SSD drive, it delivers a better performance with it than the PS3 did with an equivalent drive replacement.

If you have money to spend, a 1TB SSD like a Samsung 840 EVO would be amazing. If not, get a WD Scorpio Blue drive in 1TB. If you really want 2TB, you need to go with a WD Green drive and I don't know how the built-in power saving features work out with the PS4. You don't need a WD Black drive.

Performance is not my main reason for upgrading the drive. I wouldn't dare spend $100+ for a drive just for a minimal performance upgrade.

My 2 main reasons, are storage size and reliability. I don't really trust the WD Blue, Green, and Yellow series. Maybe they are better as laptop drives, but I see to many failures from them far as the desktop drives go.

2TB allows me to have a decent amount of games before I have to think about deleting them.

After the Xbox One update, I looked at my free space on the One and it's only at 235GB of free space. I was kinda in shock by this.

Considering I don't have that many games for the Xbox One.

I've put a 750GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD in my PS4, and it works fine. Had no problems installing it, either. 635GB of free space showed up in Storage Management after first installing it.

Loading times are definitely much quicker for games like Killzone Shadow Fall and Tomb Raider Definitive Edition (especially when loading a randomly chosen level in each case).

The cost of the drive was almost the same as buying a second PS4, but I sold my Xbox One to pay for it (which hadn't even been switched on since I got my PS4).

Might be worth it for BF4. Rush mode does not have a timer preventing players from starting, it's first load, first in. On PC if some people had an SSD they would load in first and plenty of times would activate the objective by the time people on mechanical hard drives would load in.

My friend with 64GB of RAM in his desktop created a RAM Drive and installed BF4 on that. By the time the enemy team, (and his team for that matter) had loaded in, he had armed both the first objectives and they were half way to exploding. If an SSD in the PS4 saves you load times similar to Killzones (20 seconds) then it might be worth it.

Just FYI, the 360 used WD Blues so if they never gave you an issue then it should be good enough for your PS4 (Y)

As for the X1 HDD, remember it is split into 5 partitions. Only 300~ GB is available for games.

Samsung sold off there Hard Drive division to Seagate (Less there SSD drives)

Yeah mentioned that in my next reply. The drives which died on me were pre-merger

Didn't realize the partition was that big...so that means more space is lost after both partitions are formatted???...

Full breakdown:

  • Temp Content: 44 GB capacity, 27.1GB available (in an Xbox that we never turned on).

  • User Content: 391.9 GB capacity, none used.

  • System Support: 42.9 GB capacity, 34.1 GB available.

  • System Update: 12.8 GB capacity, 11.8 GB available.

  • System Update 2: 7.52 GB capacity, 7.47 GB available.

Tempted to install the 2TB drive in mine, but there have been mixed reports of it working. Apparently it doesn't spin up quick enough for some PS4s, causing them to timeout when booting.

Bit of a shame since you can get the drive in a USB enclosure (with a SATA interface) for ?99.99 - ?50 less than the bare drive is going to retail for in March (they're jacking up the price just because of PS4 compatibility, which sucks).

I have a 1TB WD Scorpio Blue on my PS3 for almost a year and had a 500GB one before that. Rock solid on the 2,5'' format.

2TB WD Green? Like I said, it has a clear focus on power saving features causing it to spin down and park its heads. Don't know if it's any good for a PS4. (SPLURGE ON AN SSD).
