Finally bought a Wii U

Recommended Posts

Heh. I will do a quick write-up of ZombieU after I give it a play.

Yeah, it certainly is a firtst party console. I doubt I will buy outside of those titl;es you mentioned. The exception being Bayonetta 2

If you like jrpg keep an eye on X. It looks like a good game.

Source? Genuine curious.

I know they stopped making the basic unit and only making the deluxe model at the moment.

Are you signed up for Nintendo Rewards (different from the Deluxe Promotion)

https://club.nintendo.com/home.do

It works on Wii, U, DS, 3DS games w/ codes.

With the stars? Yeah, I do that stuff. I have actually received a few rewards already. The mario face towels and the mario hat pencil case  I am filling out the survey for my Wii U stars at the moment.

The new Mario game is really good. If you enjoyed past Mario games you'll love it.

Yep. That will be the one I will get, then.

Have i on 360. Unless I came across a really great deal I doubt I could justify buying it twice.

I have a lot of fun with my WiiU, I'd suggest picking up a few of the Virtual Console titles like Earthbound and Super Metroid.  Both of them are great games and support customizable controls from the VC emulator as well as save states.

While nintendo have never been able to do GUIs properly (there's no reason for it to be that laggy) - I love the Wii U. The games on it are fun, and I really love the gamepad (I think it's great that I can walk downstairs and continue my game).

Wow, you must have a magic WiiU with boosted power to the Wifi in the base unit and gamepad if you can use it outside the same room, much less another floor :)

I'm also extremly psyched / awaiting the relase of monolith's "X" game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imMF95Ugvwg

Look cool, but... I know it's one of those stupid ridiculously oversized final fantasy style swords, but how do you hit something 50 meters away with your sword :p

Also I think the floating damage numbers actually detract from the game.

But I'll definitely keep an eye out for when it drops.

Yes, aside from off-tv play it doesn't do anything special with the gamepad.

As it should be in most cases. unless it can be used for a map or something (that can also be on the main screen) I have not seen any usable implementations of the pad screen outside of off screen play. and a lot of annoying implementations like Mario 3D.

Nope, I have a standard unit ;) and it works fine from the floor below, and the next room. I lose signal as I'm walking down the stairs, but soon picks it up when I get downstairs.

The gamepad works up to about 30-35' afaik, and in a straight line, that's more than enough to play from the floor above or below.

Don't worry I'll be joining the Wii U club soon based upon costliness impulse decision ever - I managed to snag Xenoblade from Argos for ?14.99, want a Wii U to play it in "upscaled Wii mode", as opposed to just digging out my Wii and playing it on that. lol.

I really want to wait for the ?150 price mark though. Things aren't cheap just now, at least not as cheap as they've been in past months.

Xenoblade is a fantastic game, however I do want to mention the Wii U doesn't upscale Wii games however. Despite not wanting to discourage you from getting a Wii U.

The "X" game (see previous posts in this thread) is done by the same dev team behind Xenoblade.

It doesn't? Oh well, won't hold off playing it then! I had to pickup a new motion controller as well, mine got smashed under my bed. Not on purpose! I promise I didn't just chuck my Wii under there :p

The Argos deal was the Xenoblade bundle that comes with the red classic controller, so I actually managed to buy a used red motion plus controller online for ?18.99. In other words they'll match  :woot: Quite a funny "deal", obviously Argos found a load of old stock to sell, as the game hasn't had a reprint. Whoever chucked them up online for ?14.99 should of done some research - The game was selling for ?60/70 on Amazon!

edit: Mass hysteria on HUKD now that reselling on Ebay has commenced - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/wii-xenoblades-chronicles-with-classic-controller-14-99-argos-instore-1851048#comments I was good, I only bought 1 copy  :D

Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's tower where three games that Nintendo had zero plans on bringing to the United States. It took an internet movement to just get Nintendo to bring pver Chronicles, and even there was only one print run and only sold at GameStop as the exclusive seller. Nintendo still didn't have that much faith...

Once Chronicles came out and beat expectations, the other two eventually came out with much greater availability in where you could purchase and how many they made.

Sometimes you really do think some suits head should roll for decisions like that. When teams can localize and frequently release some of the JRPGs series we see (take Altelier), it's inexcusable how excuses come about about costs to release moderately popular Japanese titles abroad. Even more so ridiculous is Nintendo/Nintendo pubs/devs not releasing titles that already have english localizations in some regions - Your examples above, but more so recently on the 3DS shin megami tensei in Europe.

The problem is then confounded more by Nintendos shoddy region locking. At least if you can't buy in your region, if it's in your native language you can import.... nope, not with Nintendo.

/sorry for offtopic rant, I HATE region locking.

Technically, the wii u does upscale wii games, as it'll output a 1080p signal in wii mode just like it does in normal mode. However it's not much different than if you were using a wii and your tv was doing the upscaling instead of the console(unless you were using composite video before, then it'll look slightly better due to hdmi).

Can I play all the games for Wii U with the normal pro controllers or does Nintendo force it on you? The big gamepad looks retarded to play on and I have no interest in it.

Most regular games I believe require the pad for single player in most cases. even if it doesn't really need it.

Yeah the menu speed is bearable nowadays but for the first 6 months it literally took like 5 minutes sometimes to go back to teh dashboard. Even if you just went to settings...

Depends on the game, most seems to support the original pro controller for the Wii on Wii U games.

I do not like the Wii U Pro controller re-design and still opt for the Wii's original pro controller.

The Wii U support just about every Wii accessory I've thrown at it (game support is different issue) except the Wii Speak.

Thanks. As long as Smash Bros and Mario Kart support normal pro controllers I'm fine with purchasing a Wii U. I'm only buying it for those two games anyways. Other games are just bonuses really.

They should. Nintendo seems to be getting the message that people want to use the Pro controller.

Even the Wii versions of SSB and MK supported just about every possible controller there was.
