Far Cry 4 set in the Himalayas, has ridable elephants

Does that peak your interest?

By Tom Phillips Published Friday, 21 March 2014

Far Cry 4 will be released in the first half of 2015 and be set around the snowy mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Eurogamer can confirm.

There's more to the region than just snow - it's expected that the game will feature a number of environments.

The switch in location marks a drastic change for the adventure series, which is usually more associated with sandy, tropical locales. But it will also pave the way for some new features - such as the ability to saddle up and ride elephants, people familiar with the project told Eurogamer.

Far Cry 4 is still some way away, but we understand that Ubisoft is currently aiming to release it during the next financial year (before the end of March 2015).

Our first official glimpse at Far Cry 4 will come much sooner, however - the title is set to be shown off in some form during Ubisoft's annual press conference at E3 in June, one source said. Expect PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. We're unsure at this stage whether current-gen versions are also in the works.

A setting based around the Himalayas was first hinted at on Twitter last month by tipster Superannuation, who also suggested it would include some kind of monsters.

Far Cry 4's gameplay will remain similar to that in Far Cry 3 - presumably including a large focus on hunting local fauna. The world's map will be structured in a familiar fashion too, a separate source said, with outposts for you to liberate.

Far Cry 3 launched in November 2012 and was followed by the excellent retro spin-off Blood Dragon around six months later - suggesting that, when finished, Far Cry 4 will have had around two years of development time.

Ubisoft's E3 2014 press conference will also host other surprises - the publisher is apparently looking to build on the positive reception of reveals such as Watch Dogs at E3 2012 and Tom Clancy's The Division last year.

The Division will be shown off again, of course, alongside other likely attendees such as upcoming open world racer The Crew and the recently-leaked Assassin's Creed 5: Unity.

Ubisoft declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer.

LOL, elephants in the himalayas? And what happened to the Far Cry 3 sequel? I think I read somewhere that the next Far Cry would be a continuuation of the story from 3.

FC1 & Instincts = the best

the rest are boring, not sequels at all and that blood dragon game, i know it's meant as a parody but it's painful on the eyes.

Himalayas are not all snow. They are one of the most beautiful places on earth. Snow is only on mountain tops or in winters.

For those chair mountaineers there should be a level where you can climb Everest and watch your oxygen levels and stamina. ...and kill the bad guy living on the top. :p

Other FPS/Action games:

You: Shoot 3 rounds into the sky

Nearby enemies: Gunshots? Lets investigate....hmm, can't find where that came from. Better keep an eye out.

FarCry Series:

You: Shoot 3 rounds into the sky

Entire population of opposing force: THERE HE IS! GET HIM!

Bloody brilliant. FC3 was by far my favourite game on the last round of consoles. The only thing that could have made it better for me would have been a more rugged colder terrain.. it's like they saw my letter to Santa and answered!

I've been there and I know its not all snow but it's not all beautiful either. I think you're mistaking the surrounding areas for Himalayas. The Himalayas itself is nothing more than a bunch of craggy barren rocks and crooked peaks. It's one of the most inhospitable regions on earth. The winds are too strong, there's avalanches throughout the year blocking roads for days rendering most of the region inaccessible. The conditions are harsh enough for flora and fauna alike. The only animal I've ever seen there are donkeys used for transporting luggage to and fro. And the few people who call it home, mostly guides and hiking gear sellers, are very nice. No bad guys here. I'd like to see where the elephants come from. It's as unlikely as penguins in Sahara or camels in the Antarctic.

I'm not big on open world FPS so I never bothered with FC2 or 3.  I probably won't bother with 4 either though I'm sure it'll look good at least.

I dropped the farcry franchise for the crysis franchise by crytek. I was never impressed with farcry except the first installment.

Would be better if you could ride a lion.  How bad ass would that look.

Something like this I'd imagine...

I have enjoyed some of the Far Cry games.  I think its the open world aspect of it all that interests me the most.  They ability to play it in a sandbox style is fun when they put all sorts of detail into the world, really bring it to life.

I could see myself playing this one if they can capture that feeling.

The Himalayas are a vast region with many different types of flora, fauna and wildlife. Not just mountains and snow.

There's some seriously beautiful geography there and plenty of animals.

EDIT: OK i've personally never been there but there was a BBC documentary by Michael Palin that covered it pretty well.

Sounds like it's a far cry from Far Cry 3.

FC3 was a great game, would not recommend sex tourism though - you might get stabbed.

Watch_Dogs, The Division, Far Cry, Splinter Cell & South Park SoT, great times for Ubisoft, what else am I forgetting?

side note: hope they don't bother with co-op and continue with local, non-multiplayer achievements.

The Crew (shown at E3 2013), Trials Fusion/Frontier, Rainbow Six Patriots and 2 more Assassin's Creed games. Plus, pressumably another entry in Ghost Recon and Rayman series.

I think Gearbox said Brothers in Arms 4 was on hold too, but it'll probably resurface sometime this gen.

Yes! (For me specifically) Can't forget Rayman and Rainbow Six.

The new Rainbow Six doesn't seem to be coming out anytime soon.  Last I remember they killed it and were starting development over or something along those lines.

I'm glad that they keep changing the setting, as that certainly helps to keep the game feeling fresh. Far Cry 2 was one of the few games to do justice to a desert setting and Far Cry 3 was a great game all round.

I imagine the story will be entirely self-contained and independent of the others, just like the previous three games.

i hope they do proper missions and ditch the dull checkpoint liberation crap.

they said the gameplay will be the same
