The sale Dell had last week for its Digital Jukebox (DJ) portable music players was just the incentive I needed to buy one.
While the DJ itself is excellent, save some issues that will hopefully be fixed via firmware updates soon, the same cannot be said about the synchronization software for my computer.
First, the installer on the DJ's CD-ROM didn't work. I got a message saying that Installshield Wizard was preparing my computer for installation (or something to that effect) and then... nothing. Fortunately, Dell's Web site had the same (?) installer available for download and I was able to use that successfully.
After installing the necessary software, I attempted to transfer my Musicmatch Jukebox (that's what comes with the DJ) music library to my DJ. It worked (sort of - more on this later), but Musicmatch Portable Device Manager has a habit of hanging for long periods of time and crashing, often refusing to work again until I restart my computer.
Additionally, songs on the same album with the same name - for example, Living Colour's Vivid album that I purchased from Musicmatch Downloads has two versions of Cult of Personality on it - are not transferred to the DJ; only the first versions of such songs are transferred.
Finally, attempting to transfer a Japanese album to the DJ failed. I suspect that the DJ cannot handle Japanese characters as its only offers English in the language options. This would be bad enough, but Musicmatch Portable Device Manager claims that an empty playlist exists on my DJ and attempts to remove it fail. (The playlist doesn't show up on the DJ itself.)
Does anyone know how I can get around these problems? If the solution is to ditch Musicmatch Jukebox for something else, it needs to support secure WMA files.
