Game division sees $78 million operating loss for last fiscal year

More money talk. Sony's also baring its numbers for the last fiscal year (April 2013-March 2014).

In that time, it's managed to sell 14.6 million PlayStation consoles. That's PS3 and PS4. And what with the 7 million PS4 sales as of April, it seems Sony sold about 7 million PS3s during the last fiscal year. Of course, the PS4 was available for less than half of that fiscal year, but still some nice PS3 numbers this late in the game. Only 4.1 million sales for handhelds (Vita and PSP) is a bit more disappointing, I'm sure.

Sony's sales forecast for this fiscal year (April 2014-March 2015) is actually grander. Sony expects to sell 17 million PS4s/PS3s (and only 3.5 million Vitas/PSPs). Given that the PS4 did 7 million in 6 months, it is possible, though you have to wonder when or where the PS4 might slow down. Maybe a PS3 price slash to facilitate some more sales coming from that end?

It would certainly help the gaming division, which managed to post a $78 million loss despite strong PS4 sales because of an "increase in costs related to the launch of the PS4" and a $60 million write-off on Sony Online Entertainment games.

They need to figure out how to produce the damn things faster if they really want to sell 17 million this year. If they can even MAKE 17 million this year, that would be a milestone in and of itself.

edit: just noticed that they meant both PS3 and PS4. A goal, that I think is definitely attainable but they still need to fix their production bottlenecks.

Certainly a realistic goal for both consoles.

I don't see ps4 demand dropping by huge amounts this year as long as they keep a steady stream of games.

Keep a steady stream, I'm still waiting on a game to buy for my PS4.  I've had it for a few months now, and I'm still playing the demos and a couple of PSN titles.  Haven't found a $60 game yet that I want.  I'll be glad when the AAA titles start to show up.

You don't think Second Son and MLB 14 The Show are premier titles? Killzone Shadowfall? You are being too picky i think

Yeah at first I thought they meant PS4 only and I was like NO chance.

Combined, probably, drop the PS3 price at E3 as well.

Funny you should say that, I bought MLB last night.  Second Son wasn't sure about and KZ Shadowfall, I played at a friends house and just didn't like that much.

You should get Second Son for sure. It's not the greatest thing since the advent of the light bulb, but it's definitely "AAA" material. Killzone - sure, matter of taste. MLB 14 is an amazing experience for baseball lovers, but it's actually too much for me. Looks great, plays great, but if you want to play it properly then really time consuming. It's a real sim, it ain't no FIFA. Anyway, point is cheer up, there's tons to enjoy on the new consoles.

Great point, I agree.
