neufuse Veteran Posted May 16, 2014 Veteran Share Posted May 16, 2014 Yes, hyper terminal that old app from Windows 95 and up... Some of us still use serial ports to communicate to serial consoles on. Anyone have a good free alternative that works on windows 7 x64 and supports serial communication of course Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1213861-alternatives-for-hyperterminal/ Share on other sites

n_K
Putty gets my vote too. Only problem is you can't do advanced things like send files over x-modem, etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1213861-alternatives-for-hyperterminal/#findComment-596406609 Share on other sites
sc302 Veteran Posted May 16, 2014 Veteran Share Posted May 16, 2014 putty. it is the number 1 go to for things like this. Supports ssh, serial, telnet, rlogin and raw. was having issues with windows 8 but I think that was the usb to serial cable more than putty. There are putty alternatives....http://alternativeto.net/software/putty/ also a good tftp service for windows computers: http://tftpd32.jounin.net/ for those times you need to update firmware, or backup configs. goretsky 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1213861-alternatives-for-hyperterminal/#findComment-596406615 Share on other sites
Max Norris
Putty gets my vote too. Only problem is you can't do advanced things like send files over x-modem, etc. There's a couple of forks that support X/Y/Z modem, along with a few other toys that the original doesn't have. +InsaneNutter MVC Posted May 16, 2014 MVC Share Posted May 16, 2014 As others have said putty all the way, never had any problems with it :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1213861-alternatives-for-hyperterminal/#findComment-596406631 Share on other sites
Jaded
Currently using kitty + mRemteNG (both free) and its doing the trick so far for me. Just needs a slight bit of configuration but nothing too complicated. PGHammer
Putty gets my vote too. Only problem is you can't do advanced things like send files over x-modem, etc. There's also SyncTerm (which does some things PuTTy does not - like support Zmodem and uploads over telnet). I would love to find a BBS that supported the Fidonet message boards that you could telnet into. Max Norris
I would love to find a BBS that supported the Fidonet message boards that you could telnet into. The SynchroNet BBS software does that, by the same authors who do SyncTerm. Supports http, telnet, ssh, rlogin, has mail and news servers, the usual BBS bells and whistles (Fido included), etc etc, quite loaded. You can hit the author's site at bbs.synchro.net using your choice of protocol, web or terminal, or just synchro.net if you're curious about the software. Max Norris
Fido is still around?? Really?? I might have to check that out!! Are bbs games still around as well barren realms elite use to be my fav! ;) It does doors too sure, BRE included.. obviously old MSDOS based games will be rather problematic, especially if you have an x64 OS. Will need an x86 based OS to run those. Gah haven't played that one in forever. http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:door:bre Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1213861-alternatives-for-hyperterminal/#findComment-596406731 Share on other sites
+BudMan MVC Posted May 16, 2014 MVC Share Posted May 16, 2014 Yeah I saw that -- I am thinking I might have to fire a bbs up on one of my vps.. I think we could have a neowin bbs, and gets some BRE going, and trade wars, and there a few other fun ones.. +BudMan MVC Posted May 17, 2014 MVC Share Posted May 17, 2014 Well going to have to spend some play time with this -- but it runs on my vps running ubuntu ;) I got telnet into it, but going to have to do some reading and figure out how to get games working, etc.. Oh it brings back memories ;) Shadrack 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1213861-alternatives-for-hyperterminal/#findComment-596406963 Share on other sites
