Which browser should I use? Chromium-based or Firefox-based browser?

Hello!

There's no doubt, that my favorite browser is Google Chrome.

I've been using it for years because it was using less memory, was reacting faster and I was encountering less problems with it than Firefox (with the same pages open) and that was at least 2-3 years ago.

But because Firefox wasn't good for me at that time it doesn't mean that it didn't got any better or other Firefox-based browsers were not good enough.

 

However, I've been wondering for a while now which browser is better to use

Should I continue using Google Chrome?

Should I switch to other based-Chromium browsers?

Should I switch to other based chromium browser?

Or should I switch to Firefox or other-firefox browsers?

 

Any why?

Well personally I always advocate Firefox. I share Mozilla's ideals for a free and open web, and newer versions of Firefox are very good. I wouldn't tell you to use it just because I do though. I'd say install both and spend alternate days on each browser (one day on Chrome, one day on Firefox, and vice versa). That way you'll see which one you prefer :)

Pick the one that works best for you and not let people tell you what they think is better, you're the one that has to live with it. They all do what they're supposed to do.

That said, for me it's Firefox, Chrome's serious inflexibility and its resource usage (which can easily get 2-3x of Firefox or more) kills it for me. Crashes too often for my tastes too. I know Chrome works but I can't sit in front of it for 10 minutes without something about it cheesing me off.

If they'd ever add browser extensions to IE that would certainly do a lot to make it more attractive to me, right now though without the flexibility, no thanks. 1000% better than it used to be though, no arguments there.

Well the point is to make suggestions, such as:

Use Comodo Dragon because it's more secure

Use Firefox because it uses less resources

 

Also I might discover something that I might like in orther browsers which I may not know.

Firefox was my vote, but I wouldn't dismiss IE these days, either. It's improved dramatically from the days when all it was good for was downloading another browser and Windows Update.

In Chrome when I type for instance youtube.com, I can press tab and immediately search Youtube in the address bar, before even accessing the site. How can I do this in Firefox?

Not directly comparable, but I have a keyword search setup in Firefox to do this. So if I type "yt rick astley" I can rickroll myself very quickly :).

Firefox was my vote, but I wouldn't dismiss IE these days, either. It's improved dramatically from the days when all it was good for was downloading another browser and Windows Update.

I've tried IE (latest version on Windows 8.1), but it's not always responsive. Sometimes when it's loading or has just finished loading a page, it's not possible to interact with the page before a few seconds. I only get this behavior with IE, Chrome is always responsive and Firefox only has very short lags.

I see. For me, that Chrome does this automatically for me is a big productivity win. I try to "tab" every website I can now and it's surprising how common the feature is.

 

The only thing I don't like about Chrome is the poor font rendering at high DPI; IE and Firefox handle this correctly.

You can use something like Maxthon or Avant browser which offers multiple engines. I use Maxthon quite a bit since it's Chrome based (and has IE) but I also use Avant (it has Firefox in there also) and Slepnir once in awhile.

Of course youtube will come up in Chrome, (but not FF). Since Google own youtube. Obviously they want users to get there faster. Myself I wouldnt touch Chrome, it installs too much crap

It's not Youtube or Google specific, it works on any site that implements OpenSearch.

While I am not a huge fan of some of the changes made in Firefox recently I still prefer it over Chrome. I compare them against each other quite often and find pretty much zero difference performance-wise between them these days so it just comes down to which I prefer to use which is still Firefox.

 

At the end of the day just use whatever you prefer to use. Install the latest Firefox with a new profile and give it a try.

I would ask what you want in your browser.

I don't trust Google, so no Chrome for me. It's also a resource hog.

Firefox is the best browser, probably running alongside Internet Explorer.

It isn't automagic in Firefox like it is in Chrome but if you go to YouTube or whatever site you want and right click in the search box on the site you can select "Add a Keyword for this Search" then you can pop in a character or two, such as y, and then in the address bar just write "y rick astley" and it will search YouTube :)

In Windows 8.1, ironically, Internet Explorer crashes on me frequently, and the same thing happens on my dad's computer, which is also running 8.1.  At work, IE is running in Windows 8.1, and I find it crashes, constantly in SharePoint sites.  Firefox takes forever to load on my PC at home, and doesn't play well with security settings where I work, so I installed Chrome today on my work PC.  All the places that crashed IE work perfectly in Chrome, including our internal SharePoint site!!  Planview (project management software which is web-based) runs great on it as well.   So, now at work, I'm running Chrome instead of IE.  A month ago I would have said to go with IE, but now, I actually prefer Chrome.

IE has never crashed for me on Windows 8.1 on contrary to what people are saying, I would give it a go. Firefox has my vote, I like their approach to the web over chrome any day.

Everyone has their own tastes, I would recommend just trying them all and using the one you like best.

 

Personally I use Firefox because it is far more customizable than Chrome or IE, among other reasons.

Been a Chrome user for about 5 years now, mainly due to it's speed, simplicity, and how quickly and aggressively Google are developing it

I stick with firefox these days. More customizable, and several things about chrome really annoy me (mainly lack of smooth scrolling, no bookmarks menu toolbar button, and its buggy custom print dialogue).

Use what you're comfortable with, see if you can find matching extensions/addons to what you're used to.

 

I have both installed but could never fully switch to Chrome despite best efforts due to poor smooth scrolling extensions and extensions having no access to manipulating the UI in Chrome - that's why there's no Tab Mix Plus for it.

If those are the only choices to vote for, I voted other Firefox based!

 

Although I recently started using Firefox on a regular basis, if I were to recommend one of the type browsers you gave us the option to choose from, I'd go with Palemoon or Cyberfox.

 

Personally though,

I wouldn't recommend Firefox or especially Chrome to anyone, but as already stated, use as many as you can find and hopefully you find the one that appeals to you the most.

It really is still bad, just that it has some fanboys for some reason

 

I use IE at work, and it's a horrible mess, the few times I've needed to use IE on win 8.1 at home has been a frustrating process just to get a simple task completed, I stick with Chrome these days because it's simple, has the very few addons I like and it "just works", but at my age I prefer simplicity, and to FF look but ugly and hate using themes
