I prefer dogs but just got a kitten as due to me working full time a puppy or a dog would be cruel, I only have a two bedroom apartment at the moment anyway

You should have gotten a puppy instead...  you can put the puppy in kennel in the bedroom while you work... and you can have someone you know well to get the puppy out for potty calls at lunch time for you. When it's done, he/she can put puppy back in the kennel and you come home from work to get the puppy out and play for the rest of the night before bedtime.
