Can Logitech or Creative 5.1 speaker systems connect to a TV?

If they have an optical input, then yes. Most TVs will have an optical out, so you can just hook them up that way.

I'm not aware of any recent Creative speakers with optical, but I do know the Logitech Z906 does.

The Z303 is over ?300! I hope I don't have to pay more than ?100 to get a 5.1 speaker set with optical.

You need an amp for those speakers, which is where most of the cost comes from.

Could you get a 5.1 channel home entertainment system that has optical input? They would be cheaper, but I've never looked into them as I already have an amp.

EDIT: This might do you.

I don't need a DVD player but it seems most 5.1 home cinema speaker sets come with them these days.

I could always sell the player :)

My Father has a Logitech 5.1 he hooks it straight into the headphones jack, it doesn't provide surround sound (so probably no good to you) but it sounds amazing anyway.

I'm not buying a 5.1 set to output to 2.0 :P

No, the player is also the amp, which you will need to power the speakers. You would just be using is as an amp to drive the speakers from the optical input from the TV. It may also be your cheapest option. ?300 for the Z906 is damn cheap for an amp & speakers. You can easily spend that just on an amp or a pair of speakers.

Whatever you go for, an amp will be required. You cannot just hook all the speakers up to your TV.

I've never thought of a DVD player as an amp. Must be a special type of DVD player.

Oh well.
