Jonny Wright
So I'm in the market for a new TV but undecided whether to wait for the prices of 4K sets to drop or to buy high end non 4K. Its been a long time since I bought a new TV, I got my current one during the uprising of 1080 and spent a bit more for a half decent 1080 which paid off nicely. I have a budget of approx ?1000 which won't get me a 4K at the moment but would get me a decent 1080 LED etc. I know the prices of 4K have dropped considerably recently but am not sure they will drop into my budget that soon. Should I wait it out for a bit to see if 4K will drop into my budget or am I better to go with a high end 1080? Will 4K content be widespread within the next few years to justify a 4K set? Cheers Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1230305-wait-for-4k-prices-to-drop-or-buy-non-4k-now/ Share on other sites
Ishanx
I'd wait for it to become more mainstream. what else do you use your tv for? A good 1080p 120hz tv can be bought for quite cheap. Even 720p streamed videos are compressed to hell and back with low bitrate. TAZMINATOR
you will have to wait a few years before that happen... 4K TV prices drop... and 5K or newer technologies will come out within a few years. Right now, a few people are using 4K.... it is not even in mainstream yet. Even the TV providers are not up to 4K yet.. only few.. If you want 4K, feel free to get it. It is not up to us.. it is your decision based on what you are using it for. Brian M. Veteran Posted September 21, 2014 Veteran Share Posted September 21, 2014 I don't see the point of buying 4K right now personally. By the time 4k becomes mainstream, It'd probably be time for me to upgrade again. I bought an F8000 last year when they launched, and it's only a 1080p panel, but it's gorgeous. Ironman273
I know Sharp has some TVs that will downscale a 4K signal but still accept it. The resolution is midway between 1080p and 4K. They also upscale 1080p that supposedly enhances a regular HD signal. I don't know if that's a stop-gap for you. BobSlob
Most 1080p Cable is still compressed and pixelated to all hell, and it's been around for years! I'd wait for sure on the 4K Some places are starting to move to H.264/MPEG-4, Comcast just started pushing some southern regions to it to increase picture quality... until now it was MPEG-2 everywhere pretty much.. so 4K channels wont be to far off when they get this pushed out nationally. Cheers if your budget is $1000 then wait for the new vizio 4k sets that's coming out this fall/autumn, they're going for exactly your budget. that's the set I was planning on getting but then I got a great deal on Samsung 4k which I took. few points: - presently TV broadcast is not up to par but HD channels gets upscaled fine, but SD channels....stay far from those....as far as possible. - 4k sets are presently 120hz (but 240hz is better and recommended for sports/games etc, not that 120hz won't do fine, it will, but I personally wanted a 240hz set which isn't available) the Samsung does fine in those regards for me. connected to my xbox one and comes with 2 universal remotes (1 regular and 1 air remote, controls my cablebox which is nice) the Samsung is also future proof which is a nice touch - I had a 1080p LG 55LM7600, which was a nice set but I could see the individual pixels a little too easy but with the 4k I am hard pressed to find them. - make sure to calibrate your set when you get because factory presets never gives you the best picture quality (I used the xbox HDTV calibrator to do mine). I play games so I calibrated mine on game mode. - full 1080p content looks really damn good, better than my LG 1080p. 720p content looks like 1080p. anything above 1080p will blow your mind. - ultimately it's your choice and all the people here who're saying don't get it now bla bla bla, I do believe that if they had the option/money to buy a 4k TV now they would. i'm not saying to buy or not to buy, but if you do you're definitely not losing. the vizio set is coming out this fall and it's right in your budget range. the only thing I would say is it wait a little a little and checkout the vizio. hope this helps. astropheed Veteran Posted September 23, 2014 Veteran Share Posted September 23, 2014 I'd definitely hold off on purchasing a 4K TV. For the most part 1080P is too high for most content being pushed to it. Personally, I think having 4K is like saying you hate money. I don't think we'll even hit 4K on the next console cycle, but it's a potential; If we do, that's when I'd buy into it. compl3x
Personally, I think having 4K is like saying you hate money. +1 for that. 4K now seems pointless because there is essentially no content for it. OK, a couple of netflix shows and a couple of movies have been made into 4k but after buying and watching those you're really not going to have a TV that is any more capable than a good 1080p one. Roger H. Veteran Posted October 28, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 28, 2014 I got my LG 4K TV and I say get one now. The link above shows some good buys and in the event 4K comes more popular (quicker than thought) then you'll be all set, if not you can still enjoy 1080p on it and look great still.
