  1. 1. Control Panel or PC Settings?

Recommended Posts

This is fairly self-explanatory topic title and poll. Which do you prefer, the traditional Control Panel or the PC Settings application in Windows 8.x / Windows 10? Why do you prefer it?

As a desktop user who primarily uses the Control Panel I must admit that its interface is largely inconsistent; I don't believe that Microsoft has aimed for a consistent interface since Windows Vista with its task panes and hub pages. I much prefer the PC Settings application when using Windows 8.x because it provides an assortment of options for both mouse and touchscreen users in a friendly and consistent interface. It also provides options that aren't readily available in other parts of the UI?application permissions, lock screen settings, synchronization settings, and et cetera.

My main complaint with PC Settings is that it does not include all of the options present in the Control Panel or the Personalization options for the Start screen. This is something which I hope will change with the final release of Windows 10.

I prefer the control panel (with small icons), but it's pretty much just out of habit. I already know where everything is so it lets me get where I need to with the least amount of clicks.

Neither. On my "classic" setups I use a drill-down menu, haven't used the control panel in years.  When the start screen is in play, I only look at it once so I can create shortcuts and never look at it again.  I do agree that PC Settings will eventually be pretty slick once they fill that out more.. plus it shouldn't be terribly hard to see what's installed cpl wise and link the things for stuff that isn't metrofied.

Well the "drill-down" menu is still the "Control Panel" vs the "Settings" in the modern UI. So you vote Control Panel.

As in an actual menu with the rest of the launcher items, not having to bring up another window to get to them. I haven't actually used the control panel window itself in years.  But yes, the classic items if that's what you're referring to.

I agree with you, I think they will bring something different such as the frequent use internet explorer menu can bring a super start menu ENA become more and more desktop-like in windows 8 may be connected between dosy ...

Microsoft One thing that did not stop me if I interface that people want designed as would a web page likened to'd Packed full of features to be faster for the additional options and short cuts would add and fomat after kicking a lot of the program itself is not loaded I wish Microsoft tried to negotiate with did not have my voice heard in if I know them, so much to tell I have something ...

Control Panel, obviously. it's faster to navigate & currently has more settings than PC Settings. Also, the Control Panel allows third party developers to create their own CPLs. So hopefully in Windows 10, they enable the ability to allow developers to create PC Settings configurations for Modern Apps. :)

PC Settings. It's time to kill off the ancient, and disjointed Control Panel.

Meh i've already edited this comment 3 times so i'll just list all my edits

Control Panel on the desktop is just fine, leave it alone.

Gee, i'm surprised you would say such a thing.

Why is it you consider everything that isn't metro ancient? Just because it's been that way for a while doesn't mean it isn't useful.

I would like to have all in one window...

yes, a unnecessary colorful, extremely limited, full screen version of control panel, is not my favorite.

we will see, maybe if they do it well, and new pc settings are not full screen, and have ALL the same options as are available in control panel,  then maybe.

Not really sure merging the two would work considering the differences between the Uls. Maybe I need to see an image concept before I make my mind up on that.

The problem control panel has is that if you, more average users, go a few clicks deep into it then you run into older popups with things that haven't changed in years still around.  MS started to add things into the main control panel window, all in one nice place, but never finished it.  Now with PC Settings I hope they go all the way, add in an advanced option to show more settings for those who need them just as long as it's all in one nice central location and not scattered about.  I expect in time that control panel will be replaced though, with having the ability to run PC settings itself windowed now in 10 then all the moaning over a "full screen" app is done with.

And there's really no need to have two things going forward, IMO, it'd also add to consistency regardless of device type and environment because be it on the desktop or on a tablet with touch, you'll be going to the same place.

QFT.

Control Panel with the small icon view, i find it much quicker to get to where i wish to be.

I'm guessing Windows 10 asked which you prefer? i've been asked to give feedback on this twice now.

I like the idea of PC settings better. It has the potential to be the single location to find all settings in a logical, organised manner. However I doubt that will ever happen. There are far too many oddball interfaces for all the bits and bobs that Windows has.

As it stands, my current preferred method to find any particular setting is the search menu.

I'm not really bothered i just don't like the fact both exist in one operating system, my biggest annoyance with W8 is that Metro feels like a separate app or OS thrown on top of Windows... the idea is great the implementation makes me nauseous.
