blank
Okay, i finally gave in. My friends have been telling me to switch to SSD for a long while. personally, im fine with HDD. They serve me well, im never late for any important real life events because i was home waiting for my PC to start up or anything like that. However, i was in the market for 16gb of ram (my old pc had 12gb, my new faster pc only has 8gb, and i miss the extra ram), and since i was buying the ram, i thought i might as well finally go SSD since the larger sizes are getting more affordable. My main drive is starting to act up as it is, and i need more space. So, I plan on making my main drive now which is a 6xxgb something into a normal data drive for whatever, but I want to clone it and copy it to the new SSD drive. At first I ordered the 500gb 840 evo, but then I felt "only a hundred dollars or so more to get the 1tb" so i changed my order to from the 500gb to the 1TB 840 EVO. THEN, i noticed it was only a couple hundred more to get the 850 PRO, which i read has a longer life span, and some other improvements, not to mention a 10 year warranty from samsung. The warranty is great for me because I've always been told by kids online that the SSD drives have a limited writes, so im scared the drive will die, however i after researching the endurance matter, i learned that this drive will probably outlive me. Certainly out live the rest of the components in my machine. http://www.anandtech.com/show/8239/update-on-samsung-850-pro-endurance-vnand-die-size So, i'm not too worried about that anymore. Anyways, my problem is now, i have the Drive coming and it'll be here tomorrow. I don't want to install windows from scratch anymore. I'm so sick of running windows update. So many .net framework updates, install 50, reboot, and there are like 100 more, reboot, etc. It's so annoying. You'd think Microsoft would just make one big .netframe work service pack (i do have my windows 7 usb installer slipstreamed with sp1). I literally have night terrors of these dang updates. Anyways, I read that the samsung drive will come with a migration tool that should copy my current main drive and all its data. Now, is there something i need to do to prepare for this, or is it a simple task that the samsung tool will walk me through? And does anyone have any tips for a SSD noobie? Is it going to blow my mind? Do i need to wear my cycling helmet the first time i load it up? will i be happy? thanks for reading my gibberish. I just went through them last month when i went from 8.1 back to windows 7, then did it again a couple weeks ago when i went from windows 10 tech prev back to 7. I need to find a way to slip stream all the current updates into my install usb. if possible. I always think a fresh install is best as well. Luc2k
You can find Windows images with all the updates integrated and no other modifications. If you have trust issues, you can make your own.

On-topic though, not wanting to re-install Windows is downright lazy. Especially when installing onto an SSD it doesn't really take that long anymore. I am getting old and lazy. used to be whenever i had an issue i'd just reformat and reinstall windows. Just so tired of the updates lately, and they've been giving me a weird issue where i have to manually install a couple at a time, or else they fail which has only started happening recently, used to be fine. Im following this guide http://lifehacker.com/5894838/customize-your-windows-installation-to-create-the-os-of-your-dreams Hopefully this will work and be ready by tomorrow. devHead
You will never go back to HDD for your system after having a SSD in your PC. I've had one for several years, and although my PC components are over 5 years old, my computer boots up in 10 seconds. If you install Windows 7 from a USB jumpdrive onto the SSD, it will take about 10 minutes. Actually, since yours is newer, it will likely be even faster. Enjoy! But it would be good to install fresh, especially if you have a new SSD. The wait time will be negligible compared to a HDD.

satysin
New install. No question about it. Just read a book or clean the house while it does the updates. I understand it is annoying but it is a one time thing and is well worth doing to ensure Windows knows it is running on an SSD. goretsky 1 Share
blank
Alright thanks everyone for the replies. I used a tool called RT 7 Lite, which let me download All the current windows updates, along with all my current drivers, and slipstream them all into a new install usb. Which is great. Especially the drivers. My computer is way newer than windows 7 so hardly any of the drivers come on disc, such as networking. My Drive should be here tomorrow, and then i'll do a fresh install and report back.
harvaparva
Sounds as if you found the right tool in the end to perform a fast patched installation, and here's a good article for everyone else if they'd like to do the same:- http://www.pcworld.com/article/239634/how_to_speed_up_windows_7_installs_with_slipstreaming_and_usb.html

Use "Windows 8.1 AIO 48in1 with Update x64 en-US Oct2014".Comes with all the updates up to this month :) I've used the releases since the Vista days, never had an issue. Make sure you use your legal serial number, though.

I already had an ISO with SP1 that i slipstreamed years ago, but not the many many updates that came after. I used to the tool called RT 7 Lite, which is kinda similar, but has more to it http://lifehacker.com/5894838/customize-your-windows-installation-to-create-the-os-of-your-dreams. I kinda had to figure out how to only add the updates, and drivers on my own though. RT 7 Lite lets you "intergrate" updates and drivers into the windows 7 iso, but you need to already have the update MSU files and Driver INF files ready to go. To download all the recent windows 7 updates, i used this tool: http://www.windowsupdatesdownloader.com/ which downloaded all the updates to a folder, and I used this tool to get all my drivers that i currently have installed: http://sourceforge.net/projects/drvback/ Which basically backs up all my drivers to a folder, along with their install INFs. Then i used RT 7 Lite, select the directories those tools put the files in, and wallah. worked good.
blank
Turns out my Install USB didn't work. Got to the last part of installing windows and there was an error installing a "component". I think it was from the driver integration i did. I don't know. Anyways. ITS NOT SO BAD because.... Holy heck, these SSD drives are fast. The update process didn't take as long as with a normal drive. Seemed like it only took as long as my download speed slowed it down. The Installs were speedy, and restarts were even faster. I might not need that ram anymore. This SSD seems to add its own speed to the equation, and now my games load faster, and play smoother, which i honestly didn't expect. There isn't even time for the windows login sound that usually plays after you log in. It starts to make a sound but is cut off by windows already being logged into and loaded, ha. The only thing i didn't like, but its not a huge problem, is the Samsung Magician Software wanted me to allocate 10% of my drive to Over Provisioning. I guess it's not required, but recommended. for a 1tb drive, thats nearly 100gb I wont be able to use. Probably wont notice it. I'm actually thinking about replacing all my drives with SSD. They're expensive, but cheap enough anymore. This 1tb 850pro was under $600. I can see getting at least one more sometime. thanks everyone for the help. goretsky Supervisor Posted October 22, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 22, 2014 Hello, One final thing is that you may wish to periodically run the Samsung Magician software to check for newer firmware updates. Just as with motherboard manufacturers, SSD manufacturers periodically update the embedded software to improve performance, add features and fix bugs. Besides the firmware updates, it also offers you benchmarking stuff, one-click OS optimisation, over-provisioning option and the ability to enable RAPID mode. Have fun with your SSD. I can guarentee you, you will never look back. :D goretsky 1 Share
