Going to Australia

If you come to Melbourne (which you really must - the weather's not so unpredictable in January as December), and want info on what to do/see, goto Federation Square (opposite Flinders Street Station). It's not much on its own - but its sorta the 'Melbourne Information Centre Thingamabob'. Anyhoo - go ther for stuff too do.

or go to www.visitvictoria.com

and if you want a quiet sandy australian beach, make your way to Portsea ;)

and btw this might sound stupid, or bizzard but what are the chances of encountering sharks and jellyfish?
Nah, it doesn't sound stupid, it's a valid concern. On a populated beach in Australia, it's extremely unlikely to encounter a shark. Jellyfish stings occur from time to time but we have very good lifeguards at out beaches so in the unlikely event you get stung by one, they'll help you out.

If you do go to the Northern Territory, be careful of crocs. Some of the swimming holes there have a croc or two in them. They of course have very loud signs warning you of this, but I just wanted to tip you off, just in case.

how about surfing?

In Victoria, there's Torqui. The actual torqui beach is pretty tame but if you follow the shoreline right for a little bit you'll come across an area with pretty good surf. And don't worry about being unsupervised, life guards are there along with a whole swag of peopel. In Queensland, try Surfers Paradise. I've been there but haven't really observed the beach in daylight. GORGEOUS place.

hey do you guys know of any places where they rent motorcycles?

Not specifically, no, but I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding a place that does. Like someone else suggested, just look up yellowpages.com.au

Oh! Oh! And go to Lorne, in Victoria (off the Great Ocean Road). It's insanely gorgeous. From Lorne, you gotta visit the 12 apostles (or how many apostles it is at the moment). My girlfriend has a picture of them in her sig that I took (look up her username if you like, BananaMan's Girl). When I get home from work, I'll post a high-res picture for you.

you could easily spend 2 or more days just looking at museums in Sydney, 2 days shopping, and a few days sight-seeing. grab a nice hotel at Hilton or Hyatt (they are around $250 per night i think, i have no idea), and visit Star City (even if you don't gamble, it's a beautiful place to chill out and have a few drinks) :)

This will offend some of you, but I wouldn't put Adelaide on the list - it's a very boring city, and is the butt of many Australian's jokes because of it.

Top cities to visit while you're here are Sydney, Melbourne, Surfers Paradise, Byron Bay, Cairns/Port Douglas, and the Whitsundays.

But why don't you hire a car and take a drive to some outback towns like Ballarat in Victoria, or Armidale in NSW...you'd get to experience the culture that way.

Mmhmm - the Great Ocean Road would be terrific to motorbike down! :)

australia has heaps to offer from rain forrest to desert, our size in km squared is relatively close to that of america but we have approx 60% wasteland (my figures may be a little off running from memory here) as for surfing u cant go past Bells Beach, not far out of torquey (not torqui :p ), famous place for surfing and world surf championships has an event there every year. visit the outback with the red soil for a great experience, dont stick to the cities some will remind u of just aobut any other city in the world but on a small scale. move your holidaying out into the country for a real experience of what austrlia is like. dont exclude any state or territory from ur trip if u have the time, plan your trip really well cause to be honest there is no way ur gonna use ur time well if u dont have much of it and its unplanned. the country is just too large. definately go along the great ocean road as its voted best scenic drive in the world (dunno how they came to that but it wasnt an aussie source neways). go to kakadu (spelling?) national park for a great outback experience of the top end (northern territory)

dont waste your time in museums and the likes, nothing u cant see or read about on the net, go out and get ur hands dirty. :)

really hope u enjoy your trip! im off on a trip myself to china :D

cheers!

I'm just about to go to work now but I was checking the thread. Your Ideas are just brilliant :D... but huh is that true guys? is Adelaide the butt of australia? I know it's small compared to other cities, but I heard everyone is friendly there, and that it's a nice place to visit, I'm sorry but from the pictures that keldyn took that place looks AMAZING!! so I'm curious to see it.

that's my opinion. and my book speaks highly of it too.

i would have to agree the grat ocean road and a bike and you will be creaming. also go to bells ... for surfing the south coast of NSW isn't bad in spots.

ummm well even though you have to go outback for a trip make sure you have a look at the cities, hell Australia is the most urbanised country in the world something like 90% of the population living in the main citys and suburbs but by the same measure don't get stuck in the tourist trip.

Im from melbourne and well i guess the food and the multicultural society of melbourne is the big draw. Sister city is Toronto so that gives you some Idea.

Ill put it this way there is alot to see and no mater where you go you should have an great experience.

Umm i know it aint on your agenda but while your down here there is heaps to see in Australia but poping into New Zealand on your return will be worth the trip which is also beautiful and diverse like Australia.

Im sure you will have a ball of a time just remmember there is people that spend years and year traveling Australia and still will always have more to see.

Adilade is beautifully boring lol ... its a very nice place and the people are nice but it like kinda being in plesantvile... lol i forgot to mention visiting the cross in sydney or St kilda in Melbourne is well worth a look for that reversed pleasantvile kinda feel.
