3 colours compromising of 12,300 units would be a bit of a nightmare. How do they split it up worldwide? How do competitions get done, first winner gets to choose, later winners just get stuck with whatever colour is left? How do they tie black and white to the PS1? Most people will want grey in this case as it symbolises the PS1. So for the scalpers black/white is never going to be worth as much as grey either lol.

Plus the costs to do 3 colours of these units off of the production lines would be more than just one colour. It's not like they're selling it at an inflated RRP, with all the accessories the price isn't far off $499. There will be no reprints or long term need for production lines to produce engraved cases or even use this colour.

This is a very low print specialist PS4, people aren't going to be ordering this for more than 60 seconds (if even that) when the order page goes up for whatever units aren't used in competitions.

What about the smartphones?  they have colors  such as white, black, gold, red, blue... that you see everywhere. Not talking about the cases.  On the phone itself.

If they don't want to do the color options, then you can get it painted by the professionals (after market).. or you do it on your own if you know what you are doing...

Look at my addition to my post. You're missing the point. If you want a black or white PS4, buy a black or white PS4 (both available just now). This isn't a new holiday bundle or something mom and pop are going to be able to stroll into best buy and try and decide on what colour to get (like a mobile phone, on sale all year round).

If you took this to a modder to paint you'd be very silly. You'd absolutely destroy the resale value of it, and the purpose of it. You'd be better off buying a black PS4 like I've just said, and if you're incredibly luckily just fire this on Ebay like a lot of people will to double your money. In other words, somehow buy one of these, sell it, and end up getting a black or white PS4 for free.

If the original PS1 was pink, this would be in pink. Then we'd probably have some of manly Neowin saying it was hideous! Although in reality a pink console probably wouldn't sell that bad :p I know it would be Andy's first choice.

I know there are black standard PS4.. but I was saying it would be nice to have 20th anniversary version console in matte black..   that is my opinion.   If you like grey.. go for it..

Not if you sell it to the right person as long as you have the "wow" factor..  Same way to the cars ... for example: you buy a car, you fix it up such as more horsepower, and body tweaks, etc... you can sell it high...

I bought $500 PC and I fixed it up and sold it for more than that... it works for me.  :)

but this is not a pc. this is a limited edition and numbered console.

Standard PS4 doesn't have the engraving and some people really don't care about resale value or the fact its grey because the original ps came that way. I would prefer this console in matte black.

I really want that controller, Saw it yesterday and thats all I wanted.

My Entertainment center is completely black and I wanna keep it that way. But that controller would fit really nice in my hands and in the center console of my recliner set.

That's nice, but it's for collectors who want to honour the nostalic appearence of the original grey SCPH-1001 to SCPH-900X units. It's not for anyone else.

I think you'd be better buying it, selling it for $1000 then finding someone to engrave a black PS4.

Anyone who buys this and doesn't care about resale value is a looney. Not saying we're all scalpers, but a 2nd hand one of these in 5 years time is still going to fetch a ton. No sane person buys something as rare as this and gets it "spraypainted".

I hope you don't have to eventually turn it upside down for it to continue working properly /s         :woot:   :woot:   :woot: ......................

lol, or on it's side.

Well, good luck with that.

Since you don't get it, I close my case now..

If you want. I've not read anywhere else on the web of people ever wanting to buy something this rare and instantly destroy its resale value to end up with something you can get really easily (a black or white PS4). The grey is as synonymous with this unit as any other small change they've made. It's meant to come in grey for a reason, and yes, I think you are silly if you somehow manage to get one of the 12k of these and paint it another colour. Each to their own of course, but my opinion stands you're silly for wasting the value of such a product.

It's like buying a rare Pikachu N64 and then deciding you don't like yellow so you'll paint it black... the colour a standard N64 comes in. Or even take the case of a unit that's not exactly rare, just special, the star wars Xbox 360. I don't know anyone who got that and then went white isn't as nice as black, I'll mod it black. And it doesn't even have the insane resale value of something like this.

So to sum things up, I don't know anyone (other than those on Neowin apparently) who would mod this console, nor do I know any collector of rare gaming memorabilia who gets low print hardware and then changes it's colour. Just saying.

So what?

Look around, people change their stuff around...  for example, you got a white car, but you hate white, you save money for a new paint... so you can paint your car black or whatever you want..

Who cares...  as long as something looks good to you.. so you pay the good amount of cash to the seller that you and seller are happy about the price for the said item.

BTW,  paint does not cost you 12k for it..   unless you got it painted at the autoshop which are expensive.  such as metallic, special paint such as from red to blue depends on light/sun's direction.

Don't forget that people buys odd looking arts for million of dollars these days...  I am sure this does not make sense to you.

Like I said you have to find the right people who can pay you great amount of money for that item you are selling it to as long as it looks great to the buyer..

Um, 12k refers to the amount of these made. Well, 12.3k to be exact. I thought you'd pick up on that given how rare we are saying it is, and for someone as interested in talking about it. It is genuinely rare. This is not a new colour the PS4 is coming in. You are not buying this or getting it after day 1 like any car, mobile, PC case or anything else anyone on Neowin wants to try and compare this to.

I don't know if I've stepped into another dimension or something, but from the front page article to the forums, I really don't get first of all trying to argue how this is somehow a rip off (the second you buy it, if you can buy it, you've doubled your money...), then secondly whether or not you should paint it. There's already a black, white and silver PS4?! I ... just... I don't know. I can't say anything else.

Look on youtube  videos for custom color PS4 ... same way for Xbox consoles.

They mod the everyday PS4. The one thats currently in 14 million homes. Besides losing your warranty, if you're skilled at modding you might actually up your value, a little.

People do not mod consoles that are limited to 12.3k units unless they want to burn their money. They'd buy this console, sell it, double their money and then buy a normal PS4 and all the bits needed to mod it and still be up cash. I'm sure someone on Neowin is going to somehow get ahold of one of these and do something to it just to stick it to me, but well, I'll be the one laughing that you've just lost an insane amount of resale value.

We're not arguing modding merits here, we're saying no one who is sane is going to mod an incredibly limited special edition console that will only go up in value as time passes. 12.3k is really not a lot. Sure one off, or runs of 10 special consoles for some of the really rare gaming hardware has this beat. But in terms of a limited edition release that the mass market actually has some sort of chance of getting, this is up there with the rarest.

Look up some of the rare Dreamcasts or N64s on Ebay. People do not mod them, they sell them off to collectors and fans for stupid money.

Is this for EU only?

Global.

But each region has a different amount of units allocated, and some are only giving away through competition, others competition and retailers/websites TBA. UK and US seem to be getting the biggest shipments. Console is region free and operates on 100-240v though.

For example some countries I read on Neowin were only getting like 20 units, and were giving them away through a Facebook competition. Sure I seen Portugal mentioned as one of them.

Modding this is like modding a rare vintage Ferrari by putting a massive spoiler or making a sangria with a ultra expensive and rare wine. Beyond being stupid, it's money thrown away. And stupid.

honestly, i never liked the dull grey of the first Playstation (then PS1); i've had a first gen model and yeah, it looked pretty dull. But this is a nice celebration of one of the most sold consoles and a console that changed the history of console wars, by putting a big nail into Sega's coffin.

You have the answer but you missed the point..

I am smart that way..   I have good tricks up my sleeves..
