Asus monitor question

Does anyone own an Asus HD monitor ?

 

I switched from using the DVI input to using an HDMI cable input.

 

But I can not get a full-screen format now.

 

There are margin limits all around the picture.

 

The Aspect setting is grayed out.

 

Apparently you can only use the monitor full-screen if you run the DVI.

 

That doesn't sound right to me.

 

Yes, I looked thru the W246H manual. [2010 model]

 

Yes, I e-mailed Asus tech support -- but who knows how long they will take, and I may not get a straight answer.

try amending your GFX cards overscan settings mate, ive had to do this on various TVs throughout my site showing dept metrics, on intel gpus, AMD and Nvidia.

 

Using DVI or HDMI "shouldn't" make any difference tbh they are the same, except HDMI multiplexes audio with the Digital Video feed. (I= Interface) the picture quality on DVI should be on a par with HDMI.

 

I would also uninstall the monitor via dev mgr and allow it to detect fully via HDMI after it mate, also ensure its using the Asus driver, if you haven't already :)

I had this issue with HDMI to DP. Not sure what card you have, but overscan is the option you want. I have AMD/ATI card, so it was in ControlCenter.

 

I am using Linux Debian, so unsure how to fix that with Windows.

 

IIRC, monitors don't have drivers.

Recommendations

- Try any other good quality HDMI cable.

- Switch back if changed any aseptic ratio in Monitor settings and also highest HDMI 1.1 or 1.2 or any other settings. (Better if you reset them to default)

- Reinstall Graphics driver with clean uninstall any HD Audio component as well.

- Change resolution to native 1080p for your monitor from Windows Settings with 60 Hz refresh rate.

- Uninstall monitor driver if installed any from Device Manager and see Optional Updates in Windows Update to find any driver.

In the GUI for your graphics card you should be able to change that... change overscan as someone already mentioned or do custom resolutions or change the refreshrate to 60hz.

 

I generally have this issue with TVs and had it with my Laptop with a LG LCD over HDMI as well. The only solution was to install drivers from Lenovo rather than directly from Intel (in my case).

IIRC, monitors don't have drivers.

most monitors have Windows drivers from manufacturers buddy, almost always better than WDDM Microsoft generic monitor drivers, win7 onwards usually sorts them if you ask it to search, it uses the EDID data to identify the maker n model and locate the correct drivers, often ICC profiles are included with them also, productivity apps can utilise them for DTP, CAD etc etc

 

both my 221BWs show Samsung signed drivers, not Microsoft (a tell tale sign) they are available to download also from maker usually.

Monitor is already, automatically at 1080p -- no monitor drivers, only a ATi video driver.

 

I get full screen, using DVI canle -- just not with a HDMI  cable.

 

I will look for some overscan, tho I have never seen a setting for that.

 

No provision for Over-scan.

 

I guess I need to install that Catalyst Control.

 

No answers from Asus support yet.

Installing the Ati Catalyst control has completly messed up my computer.

The screen just eratically flashes, even on boot-up.

I don't know what to do now .....

Go to Safe Mode, where obviously display driver will not be loaded. Use "DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)" to remove all traces of old stuff.

Then go to AMD.com and download latest 14.12 WHQL driver, if your GPU support it or otherwise whatever driver it supports.

 

Install it and make sure you untick all irrelevant stuff like AHCI driver, which are sometime required in APU cases.

OMG -- what a nightmare.

 

After my panic, I thought of unplugging the HDMI cable.

 

Then I plugged the DVI  video cable back in.

 

This allowed me to see and start Windows, although without hi-rez video.

 

My video driver was gone.  My PC does not get along with Catalyst Control.

 

Thank god for the genius who invented System Restore -- it is a miracle in a case like this.

 

I restored Windows and the video to earlier in the day.

 

I now have the full screen back at 1080p -- on the DVI mode.

 

 

Today's lesson kids: leave well-enough ALONE. :s

My bad didn't read carefully. Try it, when you have plenty of time. If issue seems to occur during boot up, it could indicate toward either faulty cable or compatibility issues with Display on HDMI port.

Hum, did you try to change the "PC mode" or "video mode" on OCD screen on that monitor...  I am not talking about the PC/display settings.

 

If you are using HDMI to hook up from laptop to the monitor, then you need to use PC mode in order to view in native screen resolution without any black bars around it.

 

PC mode is for laptop/PC

 

Video mode is for cable setup box, gaming consoles, streaming box (such as apple TV, Roku, etc.)..

 

That's what I have on my monitors... One of them is using PC mode and other is using Video mode for TV/streaming.

 

Hope this helps. If you don't have these presets that I told you about, then zlip might be right about bad cable or whatever that does not seem right.

I guess Asus assumed in 2010 that if you hooked up an HDMI cable, it was to watch videos, and you didn't want full-screen.

 

I will wait for Asus tech support to answer, but I just don't think this particular monitor is made for full-screen, when using HDMI  mode.

OSD is a screen on the monitor which you have the button on your monitor to change the settings...  not the PC.  

 

For example, you have the buttons next to the monitor power button... 

 

Something like this:

 

Try to change the mode and see if this helps.

I have been thru the On Screen Display controls.

 

Under System Setup, there is am Aspect Control, which would change it to full-screen, but it does not work in HDMI.

 

There is nothing labeled as PC mode.

 

Probably because this Asus monitor is about 4.5 years old.

You have to edit some binary video driver registry keys to remove the overscan safety margins, then reboot. Screw AMD and its horrible display detection.

No, it's always the AMD driver from hell configuring it as an early-2000s TV.
