JamesCherrill
Having listened to too many carols recently, I'm puzzled about the correct pronunciation of "Israel" British people usually call it is-ray-ell, but some Americans seem to prefer is-rye-ell Does anyone have any insight into this? How do the people who live in that country pronounce its name? Merry Christmas to all James Cherrill Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1241192-how-to-pronounce-israel/ Share on other sites

Gabe84
Whenever I have doubts regarding pronunciation I go to Oxford Dictionaries, there you get both the sound and the IPA of the words. http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/israel?q=Israel Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1241192-how-to-pronounce-israel/#findComment-596696466 Share on other sites

compl3x
"that place over there" Texas I don't know, aren't there a lot of ultra-religious Christians in Texas? Israel is probably one of the only other countries on the planet they care about enough to know what and where it is. I've always pronounced it Is-rail. Is-reel doesn't sound right somehow. German words get the worst treatment, I think. Porsche, Braun, Neanderthal, Deutsche, & Adidas are the ones that cop it the worst. Porsche -> porsch Braun -> brawn Neanderthal ->neanderthall Deutsche -> doytsch Adidas -> adeedus It should be: Porsche -> Por-scha Braun -> brown Neanderthal -> nay-ander-tall Deutsche -> doytsch-a Adidas -> adi-das T3X4S and +E.Worm Jimmy 2 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1241192-how-to-pronounce-israel/#findComment-596696676 Share on other sites
