dan99t
Hi, I have 2.0 Mbps internet running using ADSL Modem & phone line but actual speed I am getting is less than 1.0 Mbps. I have tried everything possible with the ISP but nothing can be done due to heavy traffic during the business hours. If I want higher speed they do offer 16 Mbps & 24 Mbps speeds using VDSL modem & price difference is not much more than what I am paying now. I talked to ISP about doing that but they don't have much technical knowledge & couldn't guarantee me higher speeds & I might get stuck with VDSL modem for which I have to pay them in advance. So the question is can I use the VDSL modem on the current ADSL telephone line ? They also told me that if the distance from telephone exchange is not more than 1 Kilometer, it might work. Is that true ? I am only 0.5 Kms from telephone exchange. What is the modem you have now, and what modem do they want to give you.. Yes most VDSL modems support ADSL.. ViperAFK
depends on the modem, some vdsl modems support both (the actiontec v1000h modem that the isp that I work for uses does for example, we use them on adsl). see if you can get your isp to tell you the model modem it is, then look up the specs and see if it supports adsl. dan99t
Thank You all for clearing up the confusion. I did some reading on DSLAM & then talked to top level ISP guy & he said they don't have DSLAM at the exchange extension where my connection is coming from so it is not possible to get anything higher than 4 Mbps. Hence VDSL modem wouldn't do any good. They have a fiber cable going across the road from me but in order to split that cable & cross the road ( 30 ft ), they need at least 10 subscribers to justify the cost. Cheap b%&#ts. Fiber connection & installation is extremely expensive here so I guess I am out of luck. I do appreciate your guidance. +BudMan MVC Posted December 30, 2014 MVC Share Posted December 30, 2014 If they don't have dslam - how do they connect their subscribers? As to 4mbps vs your 1 your getting - that sure seems like more bandwidth to me Seems like you need to open your own ISP that provides real service Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1241516-can-i-use-vdsl-modem-on-adsl-line/#findComment-596700150 Share on other sites
+John Teacake MVC Posted December 30, 2014 MVC Share Posted December 30, 2014 You have to ask the question if the ISP doesnt have much "Technical knowledge" then ... Well anyway come on name and shame the ISP. It would help the community. Maybe you were just talking to the sales people and need a more direct contact. +sphbecker MVC Posted December 30, 2014 MVC Share Posted December 30, 2014 Most likely the answer is NO, unless it is a ADSL/VDSL hybrid modem, which most are not.
