bsommer
Hi all, My family is looking to upgrade our 42 inch LG HDTV to a 50-55 Inch set. We are overwhelmed by the amount of choices and would appreciate some help. The only real requirement is that it is either a 50 or 55 inch TV, and that the base will fit on our somewhat small TV console which is roughly 24 inches wide. Our budget is between 500-900 US Dollars and we would prefer a quality brand such as LG or Samsung. This vizio seemed to be a good choice but after reading some of the reviews it made me unsure: http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E550i-B2-55-Inch-1080p-Smart/dp/B00GKKI4JI/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!! Thank you neowin, Bsommer Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1242380-50-55-inch-hdtv-purchase-help/ Share on other sites

+E.Worm Jimmy Subscriber¹ Posted January 7, 2015 Subscriber¹ Share Posted January 7, 2015 samsung 5xxx series and 6xxx series are the best bet for sure. there should be a lot of sales now, and sell of of the last year stock. you should be able to get a great deal (as last year models are just as good as new for most people) unless you have a very specific reqirements (most people do not) you are cool with either. I also recently bought LG (that uses WebTV for smartTV instead of android) and while i like it, i don't see much difference or improvment over samsung. and i don't like thier contrast rating system which makes it improssible to compare. now i don't know much about specific model deferences. so i suggest that you go on authetics (bezel and unit thinkness) AND PRICE. find something that looks decent enough at the best price. picture quality wise, you will be happy with samsung 5xxx and 6xxx series EDIT: checking out sale prices, i would suggest you get the cheapest 6xxx series samsung you can find. i am still not certain on the differences, but i, and my friend own 6-series samsungs and we LOVE them. and last year models can be had for cheap. star56565656
Id say get a Samsung, they're much better and you get a quad core engine on smart tvs, but at that price LG maby is quad core. Ive just upgraded my 32 inch tv to 40 for $AU648 and its great for one person, samsungs are just the best. GotBored
Look into TCL tv's also. Quality brand with 3 year warranties (New to certain markets so are selling tv's at very good prices). Here is some info on TV's. Full HD is 1920x1080 (Most TV's will still have this resolution) - 4K is the new standard and is 3840 x 2160 (Almost 4x the resolution of full HD). LED is the current standard of TV displays, OLED is the next generation (Overall OLED is better in terms of lower power consumption, picture contrast, image quality and image quality at angles and distance) Refresh rate (Standard is 120Hz I believe atm), this is basically the frames per second rate (How many times a image is refreshed on the screen to display an image. Higher is better typically but in my opinion you don't really need to go above 120hz as no media needs faster refresh rate at the moment. Also please don't get sucked into buying a $100 hdmi cable if you purchase a tv at a store, I had a friend recently do this and that high priced cable works exactly the same as a $10 hdmi cable and only has a marked up due to marketing hype. Look at the HDMI revision, HDMI 2.0 is the newest and will play everything (4k, 3d, has arc support and etc) you can buy it for $10, no need to spend $100 on one that is gold plated or a overpriced brand as it does the exact same thing, no differences to image quality or support what-so-ever. +E.Worm Jimmy 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1242380-50-55-inch-hdtv-purchase-help/#findComment-596708804 Share on other sites

PGHammer
Agreed on SAMSUNG - we have three (32", 50", 55") - the latter two are SMART series - the 50" led directly to the 55". For audio, why Sonos over Bose? (Merely curious - I prefer Bose to Sonos.) +Elі Subscriber² Posted February 21, 2016 Subscriber² Share Posted February 21, 2016 Samsung is the way to go, I think you did good, not a big fan of curved TVs but that looks like a great TV. PGHammer
I'm not a fan of curved, either - especially since I prefer to wall-mount. (I would think that the additional front-to-back of a curved HDTV would present issues for wall-mounting, and especially with my preferrred VESA-type wall-mounts, which don't take curvature into account.) patseguin Global Moderator Posted February 21, 2016 Global Moderator Share Posted February 21, 2016 I've owned a lot of TV's and currently Panasonic is my favorite but Samsung's are great too. My dad just bought a 4K Samsung for like $600 and the quality is great. shockz
Samsung, Panasonic and Sony are usually your best bet, they generally offer the best picture quality and features but you do tend to pay a premium. Vizio is a reliable TV, but lacks on features and picture quality of the big 3. We purchased a Sony Bravia 55" recently and it's picture is probably the best I've ever owned, and the Android TV OS that came with it is fast and reliable. It even runs sling well, on wireless. +Gary7 Subscriber² Posted February 21, 2016 Subscriber² Share Posted February 21, 2016 Sony is over priced. They are not as good as they used to be. LG makes a pretty good set.
