Last.fm scrobbling makes this finally become an interesting alternative for many people. I'm currently planning to (finally) replace AIMP by something with a cleaner UI.  I'll give it a spin tomorrow.

Thanks! Let me know what you think of it. I plan more last.fm goodness in the future, as their API seems very easy to use. For the next build (probably to be released this week), I'll add artist information + similar artists (clicking on them brings you to the last.fm info page for those artists):

If you're looking into more last.fm stuff - the ability to get album art for tracks that have it missing would be amazing. It looks like it could be possible but I'm no programmer so I'll leave the clever bit to you :)

That's actually the next thing I'm working on :) . According to the API is should be possible. i'd like to have this working for the next build.

Is there a timed event or auto detection for the collection to detect added songs to a current collection's folder?

I added a folder yesterday and it still hadn't shown up.  I then clicked the Refresh now button and it was added.  There are no errors in the log file for the last two days it has been running.  I do see the entries for adding the new files after I clicked the Refresh now button.

Thanks.

Not yet (but that's planned). Currently you have to press the refresh now button or restart Dopamine.

Can you do something about the startup time? I have a ~ 3 year old i7 and it takes seconds to start for me. :(

How many files do you have in your collection? How many seconds does it take to start?

I've released another build. It fixes a big memory leak which has always been there since version 1.0.

0, I haven't imported my library yet. (It started to after the start though.)

I'm afraid that's as fast as I'll get. It's not doing much when starting, there's nothing I can trim.

Just noticed the Last.fm integration is there but I'm afraid trying to sign in just seems to crash the application.

The reply to the web request says: (403) Forbidden. Is that account still valid? What happens when you sign with that account in on the last.fm website?

Failure to log in should not crash Dopamine however. I just fixed it for the next build.

Yep, I actually didn't have a Last.FM account before I noticed this feature (or if I did I've forgotten about it) so this was a brand new account I setup. I can log in with this account but unfortunately, Dopamine still crashes.

I just created a new account to test this out and it works fine. So, right now, I can only think of special characters I might parse incorrectly. Are there any special characters in you username and/or password? (you can PM me if you prefer)

Yep, it looks like it was characters that did it.

I had an ^ symbol in there but changed my password and used a more common symbol like ! and it has now signed me in.

if It helps I got the following when I tried to use no special character at all, at least this way you know what you need to cater for.

Quote

Your password is not strong enough. New passwords must:

Be at least six characters long

Contain one or more numbers

Include at least one of the following special characters: !"#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[\]^_`{|}~, or a space

So the next thing now is how exactly does this work?

So I've got my Last.FM account linked, I've enabled Scrobbling and enabled download Artist info - at what point does this do something? If I check last.fm it claims I've not listened to anything and I don't see anything new appearing against the songs I've listened too? I also tried checking the box under a song for update album art but again so far nothing has happened. I tried closing and opening to see if this was something ran on open etc but still nothing.

Am I missing something?

Hey, thanks for all the info. I'll try to catch that character thing for the next update, just in case someone else bumps into the problem.

Dopamine uses Last.fm in 2 possible ways:

1. Receiving data from Last.fm (doesn't require account/login info):

-> Download album art (using the "Download" button in the "edit album" dialog)

-> Download artist information in the artist information screen

2. Sending data to Last.fm (requires the account/login info)

-> Scrobbling

-> Sending "Now playing" requests

This is how it is implemented (info from Last.fm website):

Now Playing Requests

The "Now Playing" service lets a client notify Last.fm that a user has started listening to a track. This does not affect a user's charts, but will feature the current track on their profile page, along with an indication of what music player they're using.

Scrobble Requests

The scrobble service lets a client add a track-play to a user's profile. This data is used to show a user's listening history and generate personalised charts and recommendations (and more).

When is a scrobble a scrobble?

A track should only be scrobbled when the following conditions have been met:

The track must be longer than 30 seconds.

And the track has been played for at least half its duration, or for 4 minutes (whichever occurs earlier.)

As soon as these conditions have been met, the scrobble request may be sent at any time. It is often most convenient to send a scrobble request when a track has finished playing.

Conclusion

Play songs in Dopamine, and open your last.fm profile page on the last.fm website. You'll see that "Now playing" will show what you are listening to at that moment, and that the "scrobble" list contains all tracks that have been scrobbled.

are there any plans to add a last.fm love track button?

Should that be linked to rating, or be a totally different button?

I've always seen it as it's own button in other media players (and I'd personally prefer that as I don't using ratings)
