Finally decided to try and fix the YLOD on my PS3 Fatty.

Recommended Posts

After 8 months of procrastination, I've finally decided to try and fix my PS3 Fatty on my own.

This thing had so many screws in it.

The CELL on this thing it huge.. No wonder these last gem systems had a HUGE footprint on them...

Well wish me luck...

Heat gun set on low. Move it around on the processor for about 30seconds or so.

Coffee filter and rubbing alcohol to clean off the old Thermal Paste.

Note - If you ever need to swap / replace the blu-ray drive, the circuit board on the bottom of the drive is paired to the PS3's mother board.

Check the fan model, there's a Japanese, and Chinese version. The Japanese one moves more air flow. (20/80gb launch model)

If you have the 1st 20gb/80gb model (can't tell from pics), you can put the 40gb (1st version) power supply in. It will run cooler, and draw less juice. There's only 1 game that is affected by this.

Also, you put a circuit board, on carpet, during winter....

keep us up to date, I have one under my bed for the last year or so, cant bring myself to throw it away & never got round to trying to resurrect it... SWMBO thinks I'm mad keeping it, but hey ho, it's a project I may get round to ........ some day :-)

i got the launch 60GB model.  Stupid heat sink fan is dead...  Looks like I gotta hit up eBay and see if I can find one on the cheap... If not... It was a heck of a run...

I won't get a new PS3 at it's current price point... But will definitely get another one, once Sony gets it to $150 or lower...

Reflowing a PS3 to fix YLOD is at most a temporary fix FYI.  It may work for a few days or could last for months.

If you have some electrical knowledge and know how to solder, you can speed up the fan by soldering a potentiometer between the 3.3V line on the power supply and the PWM line on the fan.  Guides can be found online.
