+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 30, 2015 Subscriber² Share Posted April 30, 2015 Sony has revealed PlayStation 4 console sales numbers passed the 22.3 million mark at the end of March. According to the last update we received, the company had sold 20.2 million by the start of the month. The figure comes alongside news of 14.8 million PS4 sales for the financial year ending March 31, 2015, which caused the corporation's Game and Network Services segment to become its biggest earner. BajiRav
Holy ######. That's insane and impressive. Doesn't look like they actually sold 22.3M, isn't that the shipped number? +Audioboxer 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1255190-sony-announces-lifetime-ps4-sales-hit-223-million-mark/#findComment-596835010 Share on other sites

They just took advantage of it. No one is going to turn down free PR/marketing! Initial impressions count a lot as well, especially when friends are adopting the next-gen console they'll be getting/getting first. I mean that last video has over 15m views now. Microsofts E3 presentation must be at the top of every "how not to present your product"-list in every business school in the western world. But a lot of the flak that MS received was hyperbole ("what about the submariners!??!") and the like. It really got out of hand. The sad part is that most of the ideas they had weren't that unlike Steam... which people love. Prosidius
The thing with steam is they have frequent sales on big games. It's almost silly to pay full price for a game on steam unless you want to play it on launch. If I can get Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 10 or Assassins Creed: Tower Climbing Simulator at 50% off within a few months after launch, it's a nice trade off. At least on the Microsoft side, the Xbox One sales are usually pretty laughable. It's rare they have good sales and there "good sales" still pale in comparison to Steam's. +Asmodai MVC Posted April 30, 2015 MVC Share Posted April 30, 2015 People hated steam when it first came out. People had a meme field day with the steam logo. I still hate steam but that's beside the point. Gog.com!!! It helped that Steam was pretty much pioneering a new model. There wasn't Origin or uPlay or whatever at the time ready to take their market every time they made a misstep. Steam didn't have any real competition until it was already well established and accepted by the gaming community. Xbox One had no such luxery, there was a direct competitor in the PS4 ready to take advantage of every single misstep and that's exactly what they did. They'd have been stupid not to. Melfster
I just watched Square Enix presentation of I guess Final fantasy DX 12 demo at the Build conference. It was amazing to see it running on Windows 10 DX12. It really blows the PS4 Xbox one right out water. It looks like most developers swtching to DX12 really fast this time around. This could lead to big difference between the consoles and PC this time around. I think incredible textures maybe 4-12K. If you're talking about the Witch 0 demo that's on a PC with 4 GeForce Titan cards. Virtually no one is going to have that setup, it's a tech demo only. ONE GeForce Titan blows PS4 and Xbox One out of the water. Four of them blows the majority of even "hardcore" gamers rigs out of the water. Each Titan card costs over $1000 so just the video cards in that rig were over 10x the price of the consoles not even counting the CPU, motherboard, ram, Power Supply, etc. Developers didn't switch to DX10 or 11 en mass because the consoles didn't support them and most games are made for consoles first (higher volume). The PS3 and Xbox 360 only had DX9 level graphics capabilities so that's largely where PC's stayed. The PS4 and Xbox One have DX12 level hardware capabilities so of course developers are going to adopt it quickly. Just like now that console games have more than 2GB of RAM AAA games will finally move to 64bit even though PCs have been capable of it for many years. DX12 in many ways is the PC catching up to the consoles API wise even if the API hardware has been better for ages. Yes but you have to admit even modest $700 computer blows the hell out of both consoles. I was very surprised that Square Enix chose to show off a Directx 12 demo consider they were historically console first company. The fact they put out demo out this early means that many traditional PC developers focusing their efforts on directx 12 as you said. We may see a lot more AAA PC exclusives this time around that far surpass anything that consoles could handle. I have already know of couple of games in this category. Little bit of arrogance, reliance on core fans just to accept anything, and not listening to what the market wanted (always online was panned for a good year or so when rumours started/hardly anyone wanted kinect bundled). Mattrick was axed and whatever part he played in pushing through the original plan backfired. Just like Kutaragi "stepped down". soniqstylz 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1255190-sony-announces-lifetime-ps4-sales-hit-223-million-mark/#findComment-596836120 Share on other sites

The man is a visionary. Poor choice of words used at that particular time, but no one can deny that he is a visionary. He may not hold the position with Sony that he held before, but there is NO way that the PS4 built without at least a slight bit of input from Kutaragi. Now Mattrick on the other hand, brought absolutely NOTHING to the table for Microsoft. He is/was a suit and we all saw how that panned out. If good ol' Mattrick were a visionary who brought something to the table , he probably could have gotten away with "We have a product for people who can't online, it's called the Xbox 360"... He would of taken some heat, but he could of probably gotten by... There is/was nothing wrong with them trying to making sure that Kinect attach rate was 100% (at the time). But when you have NO software for it whatsoever to justify the device, it's not gonna work. No other developer is gonna drink the Kool-Aid until the home team drinks it first. Me personally could care less about motion gaming, I just cared about it for other reasons (voice input, facial recognition in games, and the OS aspects of Kinect) But back to the topic at hand. That's a lot of PS4's in the wild. But good on Sony to listen for once. To ask people what they want vs telling them what they are going to get. The DS4, is the best controller Sony has ever made. Finally realizing that, not everyone has tiny hands, they seemed to of made a controller for everyone. Finally some spacing between the analog sticks. This drove me nuts on the previous DS' because my fingers would touch. They took the Dual Shock and the 360 Controller, and let them have a baby named Dual Shock 4. And taking the chance of GDDR5, and then doubling from 4GB to 8GB at the last minute. That was brave for a company who is/was shedding weight to keep afloat. It's almost twice as expensive (in the case of Xbox One which is $350 now it IS twice as expensive).A $700 PC in 2008 (a little over a year after the PS3 launched) almost certainly blew the hell out of the PS3 as well. More expensive PCs being faster than consoles a year+ after the consoles launch is nothing new. I have already know of couple of games in this category.Because both the Xbox One and the PS4 use x86 CPUs they are extremely similar to PCs. As such it's likely that the vast majority cross console games will also have PC versions. Even some PlayStation 4 "console exclusive" games like Street Fighter V have PC versions. Not only did we start without rumble, it had the worst triggers ever on a controller. I've never had issues with the stick placements, but I would agree as I got older the spacing would have been appreciated. A lot of PS1/PS2 fans started young, and even those that were older knew no better, as PS controllers were the standard. When the 360 controller came about those from the PS1/PS2 days that had got older had had their hands grow in size. I argued a lot for how the DS3 was fine, besides the triggers back in the day, but when finally holding a DS4 it showed just how much better it was than a DS3. I went as far to buy a CronusMax so I can use a 2nd PS4 controller on my PS3. And yeah, spot on about Mattrick. Kutaragi had some screws loose, like a mad scientist, but Mattrick was just a suit through and through with absolutely no charisma. It's why as much as Layden doesn't present as well as our dear old Jack, I'm confident in him as he's been with PS for many years, even working directly on games (Vib Ribbon). I have absolutely no idea if Mattrick even gave a rats ass about gaming, he was just a corporate errand boy/puppet. But he managed to learn and adapt rather quickly than most do. Laden, though smart doesn't do the presentation thing that well either. He has to realize (which Jack learned quickly) that there is a HUGE difference between E3, TGS, Etc. and a board meeting. soniqstylz and President Devil 2 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1255190-sony-announces-lifetime-ps4-sales-hit-223-million-mark/#findComment-596839646 Share on other sites
