Regular consumers don't care about Windows Update, hell most of them barely know about it let alone perform regular updates like you are supposed to do. For Mom and Pop, this is the best thing to happen so Microsoft can ensure their machine is up to date.

 

Don't like it? Its pretty simple: get a Windows 8.1 Pro Upgrade and go to Windows 10 Pro. Can't do so for x or y reason? Too bad, shouldn't have got a machine without pro on it to begin with. Basically if you consider yourself a "techie" and are a part of Neowin's forums as an active contributor and don't have a Pro licensed Windows OS, the only person you are fooling is yourself...

The question is, do most users find the prospect of the system automatically shutting down to install updates you didn't ask for when you're trying to do work annoying like I do?

 

BTW, I haven't used any of the Insider Previews in a while, and I deleted the VMs I had of it before.  Does anyone know if the Insider Previews are the Pro version?  If so, can I get upgrade to one of the Insider Previews right before the RTM releases and then just upgrade to the RTM from thefe?

I really think Microsoft needs to explain what they are going to do in certain cases with Automatic Updates. 

 

If there is a problem do they automatically role back? Is the buggy update hidden at that point? What happens if the user gets stuck and they don't know what to do?

 

Some people don't know about the MS Answer forum and wouldn't know how to sign in anyway?

 

Here is an example of why I don't think they should give up the option to control our updates.

 

I installed the update below and my symptoms were different than the persons below. I got a "blue screen" when I rebooted. After watching the thread for awhile I finally asked about my symptoms and was told by one of the moderators, "this is a complex problem and Microsoft has not released a replacement. We just have to wait until they release one."

The Insider Previews are Pro versions.  No official word from upgrading from Insider Preview to RTM, however Gabe has said in the past that it's highly likely this would be possible.

We know enough that MS does not always get the patches right (even MS can't run every type of hardware and software package out there before hand to test if the patches break anything) and we know not everyone has unlimited bandwidth all the time, and sometimes like to schedule downloads at certain times.

And that is ultra-rare.  Most people have unlimited bandwidth, and heck, updates by default are set to install at 3 AM.  I've never had a problem with automatic updates.  My father-in-law, on the other hand, was told by some idiot he works with who thinks he knows better that he should turn automatic updates off.  Does my father-in-law ever remember to install them himself manually.  Nope, not ever.  Every now and again I'll get on his PC and see that he has months and months of critical updates that don't get installed because his brainless idiot friend told him it's better to not.  Stupid stupid stupid.  My father-in-law is the kind of person that needs such automatic updates turned on, and not given the ability to change that option.

I'm pretty sure it will install them but not force restart you, even in Windows 7/8.x you can delay the restart process for a while, I think a week or so?  It'll finally restart on it's own after that, but when it does, it's going to be at night, I think 10 will be the same.  The update process will probably take place overnight, at 2 or 3AM when you're asleep and not doing any work.

windows 10 will continue getting new features even after its officially released. people joined the insider program for a reason, they love to test and play around with new features still in development, and give feedback. im confident they will keep a good chunk of them.

So the biggest drop is DVD playback.

 

DVD playback wasn't in 8/8.1 by default either; it's a part of Windows Media Center.

windows 10 will continue getting new features even after its officially released. people joined the insider program for a reason, they love to test and play around with new features still in development, and give feedback. im confident they will keep a good chunk of them.

I know there will be some, but not sure a good chunk will keep it on their main PC but a secondary tester computer to be safe.

*and yes there has been the rare Porno one left in the drive.

Win 10 will try to restart for installs when it thinks you won't be using the computer, and not just at 3 AM. Over the months I've tested the Insider Preview it has now learned that around 4 AM works good for me.

Don't forget that people who have RV or cars/van that might not have internet access.   If they have unlimited plan for their vehicle, that's fine but it's not good idea to stream movies everyday if you have a limited plan.

 

Some people take laptop with them in their vehicles for long trip but it's their choice on what to bring with.

 

Some people are smart to keep DVDs for trips instead of giving away and use streaming ...

first comment reminds me another things that bothers me, a friends parents computer I works on spend 4 months in Texas with a hotspot as the only access and the auto update kinda bother me.

 

in the past we never stopped them from watching DVD's granted some of the sales laptop we are sending out now HP 1040's don't have DVD's so there is that.

I'll be honest, out of all the features on the list, I won't miss any of those. Just makes me laugh how floppy drives were still supported up until now, RIP.

 

The majority of people here are probably the sort of person who would benefit from Pro's additional features anyway, and I think that is why Microsoft have done this, in a way that it is aimed at "Professional" users. Most users have Windows set to automatically update already, so they are simply eliminating a possibly confusing step for people, and also preventing your typical home user from clicking close on any pop up and ending up with a vulnerable system.

Does the airbag trigger on impact or on a specific date every month while the car engine is running. Also, your example not applicable unless it affects the car's ability to function (users are not directly impacted by WU).

Well considering there are only 50 million subscribers to Netflix worldwide and a few million with Amazon. Thats several billion more people who still watch movies at home, obviously they use DVDs.

Ability to choose your own custom color. You are given a choice of 20 or so pre-sets that cannot be customized. 

You can choose black or anything else using:

   control /name Microsoft.Personalization /page pageWallpaper

It's still there.  Looks like it might deliberately still be there to handle stuff the new UI doesn't handle yet.

I'm pretty sure there's a setting in there, that should be there on all versions, that tells it to ONLY download windows updates over wifi and not your data.  So this fear about it eating any 3G/4G data and not being able to stop it don't apply.

 

And if you do have some ISP cap per month, there's settings, iirc, to set your cap and the OS will keep track and not go over it.

I was making a joke about the current airbag situation vs updates that might be faulty... you never know until it breaks and yes users ARE directly impacted by an update that breaks their system... I've seen it happen a few times in the past two years now thanks to MS rushing out updates.. and technically a faulty airbag is an impact on the car's ability to function, it's a function built into the car for safety, and when faulty doesn't do it's function correctly...
