Thanks.  I eventually figured it out.  Had to increase my water when the population increased.  Wish that worked with the crops as well.

I have about 10 settlements now.  I went around and turned off the beacons to most of them since they were not getting many, if any, new residents.  The few that were always getting new people, I just tend to move them to the other areas that need it and the areas always getting people, get more soon after.

Speaking of Settlements...defending them can be a PITA.  I get a notification that a settlement is under attack, i fast travel there and end up in the middle of 4 supermutants and die quickly.  So I have to fast travel to an area nearby and run over.  Plus wish you get a couple freebies when shooting residents of the settlements.  You shoot a resident once...and they all turn on you.  So if you do not have VATs charged up anymore and manually aim/shoot and accidentally hit one of the settlers....ur screwed.

Have not done much of the main story line yet.  The last mission I did was rescuing Nick Valentine.  Been doing side quests, building up caps, armor, XP...that sorta thing.

I finished the game this past week for the Institute. I found it kind of underwhelming. There's a serious parallel to Fallout 3, but I don't want to give spoilers. But the complaint people had with Fallout 3's ending, they're going to say the same about Fallout 4's. Skyrim and Oblivion made you feel like such a hero with their endings. New Vegas, too. So why does Bethesda insist on making you feel like a side character? Bonus points, I had Piper with me, and not only was I underwhelmed by the ending, I got nagged at for my trouble. I mean, Bethesda games are what they are and I love them for it. But what really grinds my gears is the destruction of the Prydwen. Sorry, while that should be a spoiler, it was in the trailer. Except it wasn't. That glorious destruction scene in the trailer? It's not in the game. Here's a video. If you watch it from the jump point (1:36), you won't get spoiled beyond seeing the ship go down. Also, stop it when Nick Valentine starts yapping. This is from PS4 (judging from the name of the YouTube channel) but it doesn't look any better on PC.

So, I started over. I'm planning on riding all three mutually exclusive factions until they all want me to decide before doing anything else but radiant quests with me. So I learned that you can make settlements without the Minutemen involvement. DId not know that. So when I first get to Sanctuary out of the Vault, I start cleaning it up before I even crossed the bridge. I hate how much cleaning up you have to do. I really hope this becomes a mod someday. To tell Codsworth, "Clean up all the _____." Downed trees. Tires. Cinder blocks. Unusable beds. Rugs. Broken toilets. Counters. Cabinets. Refrigerators. Broken chairs. Burnt picture frames. (And why can't we scrap burnt books and magazines? Or for that matter, corpses?) And it all gets done, and all the stuff transferred to the workbench.

If you guys are looking for something fun to do in the Commonwealth, and you haven't done the quest "Human Error" yet, go to the drive-in settlement southeast of Sanctuary, I forget what it's called, and go southeast until you come to a lake. Swim across the lake, and you'll find a walled town (with no loading screens!) and you will have to answer some very familiar (if you played Fallout 3) questions to enter. It's basically the GOAT. Don't worry, there are no wrong answers. The neat thing about this quest is that the Sole Survivor will remark on things in a depth unseen elsewhere (at least in my 70 hours with the game). And once you complete the quest, you get the town as a settlement.

I've found a lot of places that you can use as settlements, just by clearing out some monsters. Does anyone else think there are simply too many settlements in the game? And/Or that they're too small? Jamaica Plains is a great example. When the Minutemen sent my first character there, I thought, "Great, they're going to let me use the whole city." You get two houses and the space between. It's pathetic. It isn't even decent. I wonder if, in 2-3 years or even sooner, there will be a mod that greatly expands settlement borders. Or just removes them entirely. You can control bigger and bigger areas, the greater your influence. And actually drive the Raiders, Gunners, Super Mutants, Feral Ghouls, and factions you don't like straight out of the Commonwealth, building as you see fit. But that might be too overwhelming for someone who doesn't play, say, Minecraft...

Yea, but I got some good raider power armor last night from a protecting a settlement.  And I had an empty frame to put the pieces on.  I have like 10 sets now plus the best one in the game.  The X-01.

Think I ran in to a problem with the BOS Learning Curve Quests.  3 Learning Curve in a row that requires me to escort a scribe to a terminal at GNN .   Always the same place and terminal each quest/mission.  And a PITA since there are a few guys with mini nukes on top of the building which will kill the scribe in one hit.  Scribe dead, mission over.

I don't know how spoilery this is so if you're concerned about spoilers stop reading, it's NOT plot related though:

I fought a named Gunner boss in some power armor (wearing a cowboy hat so you probably know who I'm talking about if you've gotten here... for me it wasn't part of any mission I currently have so don't think it's plot related but I may have stumbled across something that would have been plot related later).  I couldn't do crap in damage to him on foot (even head shots didn't do much despite him not wearing a helmet).  I ended up beating him by targeting his fusion core and critting it causing him to exit his power armor at which point he was pretty easy.  My question is though that standing there was then a nice set of power armor but the game treats it as stealing for me to take it.  I can strip it of parts but I guess taking the frame is stealing?  Anyway I popped one of the fusion cores from my inventory in and fast traveled home with it so my question is is there any way to make it not red/stealing and if not are there negative consequences of keeping it (like are my relations to certain companions going to keep going down every time I get into it?)

Not spoilery at all. You were in the first place on the Freedom Trail, right?

As a side note, the whole "Freedom Trail" thing is a real speed bump (pain in the neck). Now I just go straight to the location. You can do that with no consequence. Anyway, the red brick road took me to a building, and I thought it stopped there (it actually went under some rubble) and I thought I had to go through that building. Never did take care of the Mirelurk Queen. Thought it was a boss until I had to fight another one at the Castle, and another one at Spectacle Island. But you're right, that was a hard fight. I never shot his fusion core, I just beat him with a whole heck of a lot of bullets. If we're talking about the same guy.

As for stealing and consequences, first of all there's a lot of power armor out there you can just take without stealing. Second, there are companions who are okay with stealing. MacCready comes to mind. Not the little punk kid from Fallout 3, he's a mercenary you can find in the town of Goodneighbor, in the bar with the lounge singer. There's no Karma system in Fallout 4. Only companion affection. Different companions' affection for you will raise or lower based on different activities. And once it gets high enough, almost every companion has a quest and a perk that will unlock. Piper doesn't seem to have a quest, just talking, but I got her perk. So the solution is basically to use MacCready and raise his affection or admiration for you.

There's a Nexus Mod Manager update, and updating to it will disable all your mods. So you need to go to the Plugins tab and check them. Anyone using something other than NMM to mod your game? And what mods are you using? See, I got up, and before I started my coffee, I started playing. Probably put in an hour and a half before I died. Ignored the message about the mods not working. (Hadn't had my coffee, see?) Got to Sanctuary, and saw my settlement was all screwed up and my guy was naked under his armor, because I could no longer wear Kellogg's outfit under my combat armor. So I reloaded the previous day's save and gave up a couple hours' worth of work. Ugh. Won't do that again, though. And today got my first crash to desktop. First time was with no mods.

So — mods. I'm using the scrap mod that lets you scrap hedges, leaf piles, and trash, but it only works in Sanctuary and Red Rocket. Nowhere else, AFAIK. I got the armorsmith (?) mod that lets you wear more clothes under armor, such as Kellogg's outfit with its 30 DR and modability (Deep Pockets FTW). I got a mod that lets you build more things, which hopefully Bethesda expands upon themselves. And last but not least, the mod that shows what you actually say. That's practically essential. Not really interested in nude patches or the gore enhancement, or, at this point, texture enhancement. I'd really like to see something that lets you expand your settlement borders, or remove them entirely, though that might not be feasible. Once Bethesda releases the Creation Kit, things will get interesting.

I haven't done the Feedom Trail so I have no idea.  It might be but if it is it's just coincidence.  I was actually just trying to get to a settlement I was supposed to talk to in the SE of the map for a Minuteman mission and stumbled across this place on my way between my nearest fast travel destination and the settlement.  Had good baddies with nice tier 2 and 3 combat armor as well as 3 named bosses (2 in power armor) so I figured it might be plot related for something else but I wasn't there as part of that.  Took them down anyway just for the loot.  2 of the bosses were easy but the one in the power armor with the cowboy hat I could barely hurt in the VATS readout.  I was on foot (not wearing power armor) with my fully upgraded .308 hunting rifle (I specify .308 just because the only upgrade I didn't have at the time was the .50 cal receiver as I don't have much ammo for that yet).

I haven't done the Freedom Trail but friends told me it's an annoyance as well and just to skip the whole thing and go to the end.  I did fight the Mirelurk Queen at the Castle... if you want to call what I did fighting... I won that one by basically hiding in the walls and taking random pot shots at it until the NPC's killed it.  I tried using the rocket launcher but after firing 3 times at the head from across the fort in VATS and having all three fly harmlessly over it's head I gave up and just took shots of opportunity with the .308 rifle (which actually hit but did little damage) while ducking in and out of the walls.

My character is really not built for face-to-face combat.  In a stand-up fight I'm pretty garbage I'm all about hacking, lock picking, stealth, and sniping. (plus weapon/armor customization and settlement building).   I do OK in face to face with lesser baddies by using a fully upgraded combat shotgun that does pretty high damage but if it can't kill the baddie in one or two shots I'm pretty much dead.

I run around in shadowed tier 2 combat armor (synth armor doesn't have a shadowed variant and I don't have a complete set of heavy combat armor and HATE how it looks as it's so freaking bulky looking) with my main weapons being a silenced .308 hunting rifle (long range), my combat shotgun (short range), and my silenced 10mm (useful for things that don't take a ton of damage but come in large numbers as it does the lowest damage of the three but can fire the most in VATS).

I don't actually travel with any companions, I just didn't want them to leave or anything in case I go back later and try to build their affection to do their quests.  I try to collect them all but I just send them to Sanctuary and move on.  Bethesda companion AI annoys me and they tend to ruin my stealth.  I've got two stars in the Lone Wanderer perks so if I get a companion I'm instantly encumbered.

I'm playing on the PS4.  While I'd much rather have the game DRM-free on the PC it's pretty clear to me after Skyrim that Bethesda designs the games with consoles as the focus.  I also don't plan to install Steam on my primary PC ever again and my secondary PC that I keep for playing my Steam back library doesn't have the specs to run Fallout 4 well.  Next year when I upgrade my primary PC I'll move my current GPU to my backup (Steam) one and that should give it what it needs.  I'm still hoping Bethesda will eventually release Fallout 4 on GoG.com (they're doing a sale right now of older games so they have SOME relationship) but if not I'll likely go ahead and pick up the game of the year edition on PC after all the DLC is out.  For now though I'm sticking with the console version, this is my first console Bethesda game and so far I haven't regretted it so we'll see.

I hope that mod that shows what you actually say comes to console whenever they add mod support.  That seems pretty essential as the dialog system seems to be one of the biggest weaknesses of the game IMHO.  Also before I play on PC I hope the guys behind SkyUI make a similar mod for Fallout 4.  I found that an essential mod for Skyrim as again, Bethesda's UIs seem entirely geared to console play to me.  That's fine right now since I AM playing it on a console with a controller but when I play the PC version I'm going to want to use mouse and keyboard and have a UI that's built for that.

I think that mod should be priority one for the consoles, where it shows what you say. I can't imagine how life without it was. It just works how it seems like it's supposed to.

To each their own, but I can't stand playing these Fallout/TES games with a keyboard and mouse. I've tried. It's just not fun. The aiming is slightly better, but for roaming around the Wasteland, you can't beat a gamepad. Of course, on the PC, you can't rename your guns with the controller plugged in. For some reason, this wasn't an issue with Skyrim and naming enchanting items. (Also, for some reason, Fallout 4 uses the Android multitasking icon in place of the Back button. Like instead of saying press Back to exit settlement mode, or hold Back to start it, it says press Android Multitasking to exit settlement mode.

It uses this icon: http://i.imgur.com/ud6KCQd.png

Or at least one really similar to it. The other button prompts all look normally.

Fallout 4 on PC requires Steam. If you buy a physical copy on PC, it will ask you to sign into Steam, and then enter a code. The disc will install ~4GB and then Steam will download the other ~25GB. If you want it DRM free you have to sail the high seas... maybe if you bought the game and set it aside, and then downloaded an illicit copy... certainly not encouraging this, but that's the only way. As for GOG, I think the newest Bethesda title they have is Morrowind. Oblivion came out in 2006, almost 10 years ago, and it's not on GOG. Maybe when it's 13 years old like Morrowind is... in 2028. I'm guessing you don't want to wait that long.

Slightly better idea for companions: Send them all to Covenant, instead. It's a wonderful walled town, and it doesn't have settlers you can't move. If you do get settlers there (how many depends on the associated quest, Human Error), send them to other settlements as provisioners. One place with all your people and nobody else.

To my understanding mods on the console versions would pretty much be limited to simple mods like color swaps on textures and so on. They can't and won't be able to use extensive mods that change things like the UI and more that require script extenders and direct interaction with the games executable. That just can't be done on consoles as far as I'm aware.

I hope some one can correct me if I'm wrong on that and I also hope it's not true because it would set an amazing precedent for console gamers.

Here's hoping.  The fact that it was released before the creation kit leads me to believe it's not an overly complex mod and the high number of downloads on for PC will, with any luck, move it to the top of the console todo list.

I've played every Elder Scrolls game since Arena with the mouse and keyboard.  I can't stand Skyrim mouse/keyboard without SkyUI but with it it's great.  I don't even own a gamepad for PC (well I can probably dig out of my closet an old Sidewinder gamepad).  Generally speaking if the game is best played with a controller it's a console game to me.  I agree that Skyrim+ Bethesda UIs are garbage but that's not because of how awesome controller play is it's because Bethesda has chosen to design their games for controllers first.  That's was my point in why I decided to go with the console version for the first time ever for me with Fallout 4.  Bethesda doesn't even seem to try to design a good mouse/keyboard interface anymore.  Maybe they just rely on mod developers, maybe they just don't care at all, I don't know.  I still prefer a GOOD mouse/keyboard UI to a gamepad UI but since Bethesda doesn't make a good mouse/keyboard UI I went console.

I'm aware of that.  Yet another reason I got the console version.  They burned me on that with Skyrim (as did Firaxis with Civ 5).  I bought both on disc hoping to not have to install Steam yet both require it.  Since I'm not going to put steam on my new computer that left me with the PS4 version.  It's worked out pretty well so far and by the time to GOTY version comes out with all the DLC included my secondary PC should have the specs to run it (by taking the hand-me-downs from my primary as I upgrade it).

I don't have to wait that long.  I have the game now on PS4 and I'll get the GOTY version on Steam in the extremely likely event no DRM-free version is released once all the DLC is out and my secondary system has been upgraded.  I'm fully aware it's unlikely it will go DRM-free but one can hope.  Bethesda just recently put ANY of their games on gog.com so you can't really judge how fast they're going to release them.  Heck Stardock JUST decided to release their games there so if you had made a similar judgement last year you would have said their newest games would never hit (in fact THEY said in other threads in this forum that their upcoming games were Steam-only) now however their newest releases look to be coming same-day (or close to it) as steam.  Things change and gog.com is still just getting started as far as new releases. (Witcher 3 was kind of their Half-Life)

I don't have Covenant and I've been sending them to Sanctuary since the beginning so I guess if/when I get it I can relocate them but right now it's not really an option.

I hope some one can correct me if I'm wrong on that and I also hope it's not true because it would set an amazing precedent for console gamers.

I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.  I agree that mods that require script extenders and direct interaction with the games executable will almost certainly not come to consoles.  Mods that can be made entirely in the Creation Kit however have a strong chance of coming. While I'm not a mod maker myself I'm pretty sure the Creation Kit does a lot more than just "simple mods like color swaps on textures and so on."  I'm pretty sure you can add entirely new models and swap out meshes for existing ones via Creation Kit.  Likewise you can do more than color swaps on textures, you can actually swap out existing ones or add in entirely new ones.  I'm fairly certain those things are basic Creation Kit functions along with changing the properties of objects (armor protection, gun range/damage/etc).  Now I don't think there is much of anything for UI modification in Creation Kit (I think SkyUI has to make the parts in flash or something and then use a script extender) but who knows, maybe they'll upgrade the Creation Kit for Fallout 4 to add at least some of that, again though I don't need a big UI overhaul on the console, I'd need that to play it mouse/keyboard on PC.

I'm not sure how the dialog mod works specifically since the Creation Kit hasn't even been released yet but hopefully it doesn't require a script extender.  Also sometimes Bethesda sees popular changes and actually patches their own version into the core game so you don't need a mod at all.  Maybe they'll fix the dialog system on their own.

It should be interesting to see how things go as it's the test case for me for Bethesda games on consoles.  It's my first time buying the console version, the first console version with ANY mod support, etc. so I'm very much in a wait and see mode with it.  For now though, I'm very happy with the console experience but these are the early days and that may change later as mod support comes online and I see the limitations and DLCs come out etc.  Fortunately for me though I already plan on buying the GOTY version on PC in a year or so after all the DLC is out so in my mind at least I get the best of both worlds.  At the very least the console version is good enough to hold me over until the game is "complete" (all DLCs released).

I'm not sure where I blamed the game.  Though I do blame the developer for using a creaky old engine that can't manage to tie its' own shoelaces.

The audio output is awful on my HDMI too, and that's another problem I haven't seen in a game in years.

If you didn't mean you were blaming the game then that is a problem with how you worded your post and is a fair assumption for anyone to make because you didn't elaborate on the issue you were experiencing.

I wasn't blaming anything.  I was suggesting (exactly what I said) that I should've waited longer, because buggy games are rather expected from Bethesda.

I have the UI glitch where the compass objects (including directions) flicker out and only flicker in when they feel like it. Not too bothered. I know it's a bug, but I pretend it's an issue caused by the radiation. When it finally gets fixed, I'll say (for my own purpose, not as fact) that those of us who played early had to deal with more radiation. ;) And I didn't infer any blame being assigned anywhere from randomevent's post. They just said there were glitches. Anyway...

I don't think it's fair to blame Bethesda for designing gamepad friendly interfaces. Like I said, the gamepad was invented to facilitate gameplay. It's never been a console only kind of thing. Keyboards and mice don't get any kind of exclusive dominion over PC gaming. The more-or-less standardized gamepad (D-pad, two analog sticks with buttons, four face buttons, two system buttons, four triggers, and a platform button) is supported on all three HD gaming platforms. PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Keyboard and mouse is technically only supported on one. It was supported to a very minor extent on the PS2 and the Xbox One is going to offer limited support for keyboard and mouse as well. Still, supporting the gamepad first supports all gamers. It makes no sense to put keyboard/mouse ahead of the gamepad, unless you're making a game where keyboard/mouse has the advantage, such as a strategy game. However, I would like to see it improved. Being a PC gamer, if I want to set my gamepad down and grab the mouse for some inventory management (e.g. Deus Ex 1 or Diablo II which had great mouse-based inventory) I should be able to. Or the keyboard for naming something. Or hotkeys. There's no reason we shouldn't get the best of both. None at all.

Part of the dialog mod might be strings. As in, like translation. There's a mod for Skyrim that changes most of the strings from US English to English. As for how it changes the interface (borders and such) I have no idea.

So I've been watching this guy NoRespawns on YouTube, and he's been at it for a month or so, but he just started showing up in my feeds. Apparently he's been active on Reddit, and I've been missing him there as well. But despite having a low voice and a tendency to mumble at times, his videos are spot on and mostly free of filler. He focuses on settlements mostly, and I'm learning a lot from him. Here's the first video of his to pop up today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNwMGSBQLiQ I'm also liking Camelworks, who focuses on rare/named guns and where to get them. He'll tell you straight away if there's a spoiler and when to skip ahead to if you don't want to be spoiled. Here's one of his: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prgFactLAYo And third, JV2017 just posts random Fallout 4 content, he's going for one a day, but I think he's missed a few, so he's down to 3-4 a week. Still puts out a lot of content. Here's one of his latest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzZ1bhHTxbs Anyway, those are three of my favorite sources for Fallout 4 content on YouTube, when I can't play. Like if my wife is hogging the computer, I fire up the Nexus Player (set top box) and hit up YouTube. I say if I can't play, I'll watch. (And no, I'm not that Russian guy who lost his wife and job to Fallout 4 and is now suing Bethesda.)

Little annoyed that the limit for settlers per settlement is 20.  Of course, you can increase that if you have charisma boosting apparel on or taken aid.  I have 23 people at Sanctuary now.  Just wish it could go up to at least 30 by default.

Watching NoRespawns (first YouTube link in my prior post) makes me really agree with you. The guy makes these huge settlements, and they're great. (Really, I'm not trying to shill for him.) And why 20? And that's with 10 Charisma. Actually I think the limit is 21, since the Bobbleheads add one and it's CHA+10. But yes, the formula needs tweaking. I don't think it should be tied to Charisma, to be honest. I'm out tooling around with MacCready, so I should be seen as a jerk at best. But if my settlements offer food, water, and protection, why should you care that I'm a jerk? I don't go to the settlements that often, and if I build them up into little cities that raiders, super mutants, and mutated animals can't touch, why shouldn't they be populated by 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 people?

Oh, right, consoles... but XB1 and PS4 have 8GB of RAM. That should be enough. Maybe it IS enough, but it's just enough. My 16GB of RAM and my Xeon 1231v3 can handle quite a bit more though, I think, and I think 2016 will be the year gaming PCs consider 16GB the minimum, with 32GB being recommended, and if we want to have huge settlements with all these pieces (and you know mods will add a lot more — they already have begun that), we're going to need more. But I think, just like Arthmoor made Open Cities for Skyrim, blowing the doors off console-imposed limitations like that, I think we'll see that on PC copies of Fallout 4. At least, we can open Diamond City up, I think. And some of the buildings divided into zones by floor (elevators = sly loading screens, I think). Similarly, I think we'll get settlement size (object limit) and settler counts raised.

Speaking of settlers, how about level 4 merchants? I heard about them in a YouTube video. Turns out the Vault-Tec rep is one, and I stuck him on a trade emporium cart, and he sells some things, but nothing too impressive. And every time I talk to him, "Look at the two of us, preparing for the future!" Can't skip it, either, and I have to offer him a job every time. So, I may not have fully unlocked him.

Also, there's talk about some underwater settlement? The one video I've seen won't say where it is, but I'm sure others do if it's being talked about. There are doors, but they're painted on and can't be opened. It's said to be in the ocean, so I'm guessing the coast north or south of Spectacle Island, if not the island itself. There's a lot of speculation, and I'm siding with those who say it's tied to future DLC. On-disc DLC is a sin, but I don't think it's wrong to set up some of it in advance. Fallout 3 DLC added structures to the Capital Wasteland, and it didn't seem to be too disruptive, but I'm okay with the structures existing in the base game, to be activated with the addition of the content behind it. Surely someone has used TCL and clipped behind these doors and found them empty.

Lastly for tonight, has anyone tried streaming Fallout 4 to Google Cardboard? I have a good friend (sadly, in another state) who told me her boyfriend did this and that it's amazing. He got a Google Cardboard set for $23 on sale from $160 (LMFAO!) but you know, they can be made for a fraction of even that "sale" price, and they work with Android phones and iPhones. And supposedly there's an app that will convert your game's output, I guess it's a custom display driver, to the format that Oculus Rift and others use. 8x9 side by side, one slightly offset the other, and streams it to your phone. The app is $6.49, but they have a Lite version that lets you play for 15 minutes at a time, to see if it will work with your setup, I imagine. Obviously, if you have Google Cardboard, you should probably jump on this with the Lite version and see. I don't, but I can get one at any time... Kind of tempted by the Viewmaster model, but it's $30 or $40. Worth it if I can play Fallout 4 on Cardboard, otherwise not so much.
