Having a metro style explorer icon and Vista style UI icons for other stuff looks really stupid.

I'm looking forward to the Preview, but to me the OS still doesn't "look" good.

 

I miss the customization and the look of the Aero interface and all the hacks to get it to work under 8/8.1 don't work right especially when dealing with any Metro elements.

 

To me the square, flat look is very unappealing and bland -- To each his own, but even using third party apps like WindowBlinds the base OS still doesn't look right.

Considering the File Explorer in Windows 9 has a Home view and Share Button just like Windows Phone's Files app, does this mean we'll see a merging of the Files app from Windows Phone and Windows Desktop's File Explorer?

We could. At the very least, just rename File Explorer to "Files."

 

Really, what Windows should do is consolidate. Get rid of the Calculator and add its functionality into the modern Calculator. I'd say create a Modern version of Notepad and Paint, too. I think Microsoft should borrow some of its ideas from Windows Phone, namely being able to update system apps on a regular basis, even if the actual OS can't be.

Agreed. I do believe we'll eventually have the system apps permanently replaced with updated Modern UI system apps that have all the desktop functionality or even better. I am in the process of making a file explorer concept for Windows 9 and I think it might end up being a better "Files" for Desktop.

Paint is able to open a bmp-file in every thinkable location.

A "Paint-Modern-UI" is very very limited where it can open files.

 

Same with Notepad.

You can start Notepad with admin privileges and open the c:/windows/system32/etc/hosts-file.

With "Notepad-Modern-UI" this simply isn't possible.

 

And the deprecation I mentioned is not about "come on lets kill the complete win32-desktop".

It is more like "come on lets kill the Win95- / Win98- / WinNT 3.51-legacy-layer".

And wait for those apps to get their asses up, put on their make up, spray a bit of perfume, and then get to do some work? Unless they do something magical to optimise WinRT in the next version of Windows, it would be a really infuriating experience to those still using HDDs.

If the ground support is already there, which obviously is as the apps included in the OS support those file formats, there is no reason for them to not be supported by the next / modern versions of those apps. Besides, every format has a purpose.

As long as the Modern versions were brought up to the same level as the desktop apps when it come to features, this could work. One program that can work in either UI is a good idea.

Metro (universal) apps are the future of Windows. You might not want to continually laugh at them.

And what of the Metro design? Aero was "shoved down" our throats, too, and everyone went from complaining about it to "OMG, NEED MOAR 3D! SAVE AERO!" There is nothing wrong with minimalist design.

Would you work in dos environment which is full blown feature wise or go for something which is easy to use and aesthetically pleasing?

 

I believe that Areo was actually very slick interface. Microsoft could not refine it further and decided to strip it out in favor of solid colors of Modern design.

DOS from a functionality standpoint and user friendly standpoint is next to zero. It is not how it looks but how we interact with it. Comparing it to Aero vs. Modern is ridiculous. I have high expectations for threshold.

As long as the Modern versions were brought up to the same level as the desktop apps when it come to features, this could work. One program that can work in either UI is a good idea.

That's kind of what I was getting at. The main intention I'd like to see is for those apps to be able to be updated independent of the OS. The Modern apps that do exist now might be limited, but I don't see why they can't get overhauls to support more file formats and the other things that were mentioned.

the first things i notice.

 

1. mini start menu is translucent (it's been opaque in every other image i'm pretty sure)

2. the task bar is completely transparent

3. the notifications menu button is on the far right of the taskbar in the shot

If it's real there are a few things new that we haven't seen in the leaked 983x builds.  The placement of the notification center button/icon is all the way to the far right, after the clock, that's one thing.   The taskbar is fully transparent, which is another thing.    The new start menu also has a level of transparency to it that we didn't see in the other leaks as well.
