Supreme Court Rules All States Must License And Recognize Same-Sex Marriages

Recommended Posts

States cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions, the Supreme Court says in a ruling that for months has been the focus of speculation. The ruling was made by a 5-4 decision.
The justices ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges, which is linked to three other cases. Together, they involve a dozen couples who challenged same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee

I'm surprised that this is a big deal. I mean it's great that people are getting equal rights now but marriage itself is not something amazing and wonderful all the time.

Maybe divorce rates are lower for same sex couples?

At least now we can all move on to another thing to argue about.

they now have the ability to get insurance through the spouse, and legal rights about how things are handles, ex: death rights, property rights through spouse, etc... it's a bigger deal then someone always loving someone, it now handles the what if's in the legal sense for a lot of things

Great news, well done USA!

Just waiting for the haters and bible bashers now to warn us that God is angry.

my question is, where is the westboro Baptist church? They should be on the steps of the SCOTUS with their signs saying "God hates SCOTUS" and what ever it is they write.. they seem to have no problem going to army funerals.....

Edit:  I've got mixed feelings about this... Libertarian side doesn't care, Conservative side does a little - not for religious beliefs, science.

Edit again:  Hopefully religious liberties are preserved and respected after this..

We have failed Biology 101...

Same old cliches, attitude that was just overruled. Tell that to straight couples who can't have children. Have they failed 101? Your arguments are invalid. Not only is SSM nationally majority supported, the justices also in a majority support it.

Pleasantly surprised by this ruling and yesterday's. The court seems to be less to the right of the political spectrum than I had assumed.

Good job, SCOTUS.

I am incidentally 'straight' and have chosen not to have children. For this I'm a hideous person and I will single-handedly ruin marriages for couples in the UK.

I am so, so sorry, biology.

two sensible decisions from SCOTUS in two days. Who would have though. Well done USA!

Time will tell if the first decision was sensible or not.  I think it's going to cause problems down the road.  And from a legal standpoint, people are still wondering how that was done.  But that's a different thread..

I'm glad SCOTUS ruled in favor of gay marriage and at the same time protecting religious freedom of individuals that don't support gay marriage. I wonder what NOM will do now....

it's time to get rid of common law marriages.

in many states if you live with your partner for 10 years you are de-facto married. this could lead to some unfortunate circumstances for straight people living together.

on the other hand I can't wait to watch lesbian divorce court. it will be fantastic watching one woman act all entitled to alimony and the other having her jaw drop to the ground because it's something that women never expect to happen to them.

Science?  You do realize that allow gay marriage isn't going to end human civilization.  All it does is allow for the EXISTING gay couples to sign a piece of paper and become legally wed.  It's not like gay people are in straight relationships just because they couldn't get married to someone of the same gender..  Also just being a gay couple does not mean that biology fails.. there are many methods of reproducing that doesn't require a straight couple...

Some people just don't understand what love is.
