[OFFICIAL] Windows 10 (Build 10.0.10240) discussion & upgrade experience

Totally agree here. I hate the Windows update in the settings because you have zero control over which updates to get. Its the dumbest thing ever. I hope at least they make it change on the pro version.

Actually desktop users does.

As a desktop user, no we're not. you can't speak for anyone but yoruself. and saying you're "suffering" because because action center puts the icon and text and what amounts to a fairly small square, even on my low res laptop screen, I can only imagine how small it will be on my desktop, is...yeah...

Because on average screens that little red box covers everything, and the "elite" desktop users throw a tantrum every time MS try to add some kind of scaling, and then they say they're wasting space by making everything large.

Gonna have disagree here. I have some users who do massive spread sheets and need super large dual monitors with stevie wonder size print so they can see the numbers. These are old people who just do account stuff. I wouldnt call them power users. So wasting space is not a good thing.

The better question is why do you need it to be full screen?

What should they put there then? You don't want to overwhelm the user with random items which they don't care about, it's always been pretty sparse.

They should clearly make any white space over 100x100 filled with lolcats.

Or maybe make all of the text justified and have 500x500 icons.

Clearly you mean it should be ninjacat.

Yeah that's the point, they're not power users. al the wannabe techie "power" users are throwing tantrums every time MS does any kind of scaling to make text big. just look at any windows 8,8.1 or 10 thread to see it when there's talk about enlarge elements on big or hi res screens.  Heck just look at the guy who complaints about the apparently "giant" boxes in the action center in this thread(yeah I know, they're not big)

I lot of the issues stem either from funky drivers, as always, or from upgrading from preview to preview and something going funky that way.  In most cases a driver update or a clean install to under and funky upgrade problems fixes almost everything.  There's always going to be some cases of issues though, that's the nature of the beast, so to speak.  They've already pushed out two updates to 10240, I expect at least another 2 before the 29th.

For those on the Home edition wishing to configure updates.

The 'Configure Automatic Updates' GPO is a front end for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

AUOptions (as DWORD)

Range = 2|3|4|5
Set as decimal values:
2 = Notify before download.
3 = Automatically download and notify of installation.
4 = Automatically download and schedule installation. Only valid if values exist for ScheduledInstallDay and ScheduledInstallTime.
5 = Automatic Updates is required and users can configure it.

Alternatively, you can disable automatic updates entirely using this cmdlet (save the contents as .cmd): http://pastebin.com/vLxAaeSP

It can also re-enable them if you've disabled them.

Users on Pro and Enterprise can configure both of these through GPOs in the Group Policy editor.

Well to be fair, that space could at least show the full list of update contents when available. No reason for it not to really. You don't exactly need a 4k screen to end up with a lot of excess space there.

Having said that, I quite enjoy using the setting app at the thinnest width.

So... What happened to the Light/Dark modes?

They never added a switch, AFAIK.

The only way to toggle between them that I know of is through a registry hack.

Disregarding the Registry hack, it seems dark mode won't be in Win10, except on a case-by-case basis with each app. Perhaps it's something that will be fully finished by Redstone.

Probably not done because it needs other things to get fixed as well, like having the same color/theme for menus to and so on.

Is the reserve app not available anymore? Windows update does not offer it for my laptops and when I went to join the insider thing it is not available anymore either (except the mobile version). I guess they don't want me to have it until the 29th.

Windows 10 build 10240 RTM upgraded from Windows 7. Thousands on insiders, testers, etc. have been busy prising this Windows 10 mess and nobody noticed this? On the LOGIN SCREEN? :laugh:

One more reason to wait at least 8-10 months before upgrading...a good thing I tested this in a VM instead of my main OS :laugh:
