[OFFICIAL] Windows 10 (Build 10.0.10240) discussion & upgrade experience

Recommended Posts

The builds after 10240 are for the first update that is coming in the Fall of 2015, build 10500 and later are expected to be for Windows Redstone.

Cool. Thanks for the info, it makes sense now.

since windows 10 wont allow  this "Check for Updates but Choose when to Download and Install them" i'm staying away

i like to be in control of what gets installed

that is my rant/gripe about windows 10

well maybe for you. but some people like to know what each update is about & if anything happens they know which update is causing the problem...

end of story moving on

Who cares.

Security updates are also a good thing to auto-install, especially for people who think they know a lot about Windows/computers and hold back on doing it. There are a lot of venerable systems out there because a lot of dumb-asses turn off automatic updates because they want a sense of control.

Unless you're a system administrator managing systems that run a lot of custom/legacy software, or if you're a software dev (in that case, get the Pro version, "problem" solved), wanting to control which unnoticeable security patches get applied to your system is more an OCD/autistic/stupid thing than anything else.

security updates are good to be auto installed, but for developers who need to test items it gets annoying fast when you write drivers.....

and speaking of drivers, why can't I tell it not to update my drivers? maybe the version windows update is pushing on me doesn't work right... already fought with that one....

Shame :/ Would prefer the ability to customize the colors, oh well, guess ill just have to deal. :(

Have you tried the ".VisualElementsManifest.xml" trick? No idea if it still works in 10 (waiting on a few of my dev tools to finish getting updated before I upgrade), but with 8.x you could override a classic program's appearance on the start screen, including changing the accent color, assigning an image instead of using the icon, etc, kinda sorta like OblyTile but doesn't require faking a new app, it's still a regular shortcut. It'll at least give you some control anyway, if it still works.

Awaiting 'Colors By Stardock' :p

So far the RTM is working good for me. Activated fine etc, as many said it would.

One of the things that i hated about windows 8, 8.1 is how it took control over my default apps and always kept changing it back to whatever it wanted.

Windows 10 changed all my default apps again as well, which is annoying since it was an upgrade and should've retained those settings.

Perhaps i understand the UI a bit more now because it didn't' seem as annoying to change back as it did in 8.x. could be since the new default apps arent full screen anymore. hopefully it wont toy with me and change them around again.

edit:

i should also say that im really disappointed in the settings, control panel, etc.

It's too confusing. Sometimes i can find the old school desktop settings (which i want), and other times it loads the "modern dummy" settings. I wish it was all one or the other. This part really doesn't feel polished at all.

A screenshot would be good, but odds are it's just that DPI unaware apps are getting scaled, and short of the devs fixing the app there's nothing that can be done.

Here are some screenshots

As you can see these are all system applications (3rd partys was fixed through compatibility options), How could an important system process like mmc be DPI-unaware?

Thanks for the tips peeps. I tried all the ways mentioned here, none seem to work.
Its no big deal, was just hoping I could change em, maybe in a future patch eh? :) Thanks all

Is it still possible to do per app MSA on Win10?  One of the great things on Win8 was the ability to set your MSA to the Store only without having to set your entire system account to your MSA.

that would be nice, i'm definitely not using MSA account on windows 10.

I had to, to get the latest build but then I switched it back to local account.

i really dislike the settings app!

i wish someone figures out how to port over the old windows updates back into windows 10, this new one is driving me insane,

Its like they want people to pirate enterprise version of windows just to get some sort of control over what their os is doing.

If you use startisback you get a direct link on the start menu to the traditional control panel if that helps.

Or you can pin a control panel shortcut to the start menu. That's what I did.

This is fine for now, till the control panel is gone in the future.  By then though you expect everything that was in there to be in the new settings app.

I don't see the Control Panel going anywhere for awhile due to 3rd party .CPL files.

There's a way to add things to the new Settings app for OEMs etc, they'll just have to move over and will probably be the last ones to.  That said, nothing stops MS from stripping out everything else from control panel in the process, leaving it empty in the end before they finally ditch it.  It's all just a set of CPLs, folders or .dll files that can be removed at any time.

Getting rid of the CPL entirely isn't really advantageous.  Moving everything over, sure, but there's always some weird third party that directly wants to call some CPL functionality.  Breaking that weird vendor makes some guy in Albuquerque sad, and nobody wants that guy sad.  Take the Personalization CPLs<->Settings pages, for example.  There's some things that aren't available in the Settings pages yet -- and if you really want that old stuff you can manually go back to the old CPLs and get that functionality.  :\

They've already incorporated many of those links into Settings, you don't have to go through Control Panel.  I doubt we'll see the 'power' dialogues disappear anytime soon.

Heh, because Microsoft haven't updated mmc since 2000 (Still doesn't use XP themes, etc.)

There are a bunch of random windows in Windows that don't get DPI scaling, like the properties dialog of a Network adapter. The status window is DPI aware, clicking the properties button opens a non-DPI aware window.

Edit: Whoops, forgot to mention that they're blurry because non-DPI aware apps get told the screen is 96dpi and render as such, and then the DWM scales the contents to the actual screen DPI. Downside is that scaling a bitmap causes it to be blurry (Since each pixel on the screen is sampling from multiple underlying pixels), only at an integer scale (100%, 200%, 300%, etc.) does the DWM use sharp scaling.

Anyone else had "hey cortana" just randomly decide to stop working? This has been happening in all builds and RTM is no exception. It was working fine and then today out of the blue it just doesn't work anymore. My microphone is on and working and the "hey cortana" setting is enabled.

if you even have a DX11 card as I do, you can STILL benefit from the DX12 stack. from my tests of DX12 way back with the build 10041. I was testing that build with the game "Dying Light". There were absolutely no system hiccups, no video lag.

Anyone using a dual band adapter in Windows 10?? And managed to get the 5ghz connection to stick?

Win10 on the other PC here. Using a tplink dual band adapter. Win10 does the same thing as Win8.

It installs a generic driver for the wireless, but you dont get the option to connect to 5 ghz, only 2.4 ghz.

Even if you update the driver, it reverts back to the driver windows installed. 8.1 didnt do this. Once I updated the driver for the wireless, (in Win 8.1) it stayed put. And I had the option to connect to the 5 ghz connection

And would anyone know, if 8.1 x64 drivers work in Win 10 x64?? That's what I tried to do (install 8.1 x64 drivers), but it kept on reverting back to the generic drivers

It accepted the 8.1 drivers but as soon as I clicked on OK. It went back to the drivers windows installed
