If during the upgrade you get the error "Something happened, Windows Install Failed" Then you need to find more free space on the drive.

 

Not only that but don't mount the ISO and try and do an upgrade. It will fail at 0 %. Extract the ISO to a folder and run setup.exe.

I changed my PC hardware over the last few days. Thought I'd chime in and say reinstalling Windows 8 with legit cd key, then upgrading to 8.1, then 10 via ISO created by ESD went fine. I then went and clean installed Windows 10 and skipped entering a cdkey and it activated automatically.

Windows 10 Release Thread

July 29th is upon here! After a year of Insider builds, refinements, new features, the OS is finally ready. Will you be installing Windows 10? How about Windows 10 Mobile? Miss OneDrive placeholders?

I just did a clean install coming from the preview build, using the ESD created ISO. It asked me for a cd-key twice. Installed fine. However, no product key is registered with the copy and I need one in order to active this copy.

I never got the reserve copy window since I was already on the preview. Am I seriously going to have to reinstall Windows 8 in order to properly go to Windows 10?

Are we going to be able to download it as soon as the clock hits 12?

Maybe...  Only a few hours before 12 midnight on my end. 

 

Maybe MS is going to flip the switch to allow others to download/upgrade W10 whenever they decide to flip the switch.. I mean it could be 6am, 9am, etc.

I'm don't think so because that would kill Microsoft's servers.

Well not everywhere will be 12 at the same time. Either way they're going to have millions of people hitting their servers. A staggered release doesn't seem like it would make that much of a difference for such a large scale release.

First install needs to be an upgrade from a copy of 7 or 8, you can't do a clean install over an insider build and have it work.

You can upgrade a 7/8 install to the preview and then to the GA build, and then do a clean install. But you need to have the original installation to work off.

I got mine to start downloading by doing the following:

Delete contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder

Run wuauclt.exe /updatenow twice in command prompt as admin

Time to see if it will actually install :)

Mine has downloaded twice :/ but has not started update yet (I have boot.wim)

Well according to the insider page it's now "available to people around the world!" but the download links don't lead to anything for me.

Are you using a PIN to log in? If so try logging in with your password.

06:05 am in the UK and the upgrade hasn't even downloaded yet.  This leads me to believe we might not be getting it today.
