After nuking the install files and the Windows.old folder, it looks like Windows 10 uses less disk space than Windows 8.1, which is great for my 64GB SSD.  :)

One of the things that annoyed me about Windows 8 was I couldn't change the install location for metro apps.  I was browsing settings in Windows 10 and saw that you can change the location, but it's greyed out.  Anyone know why?

Can anyone list all new 'meto style apps' that Windows installs by default? And how to get rid / uninstall them?

Used the media creation tool,  upgraded quickly.  Says window isn't activated.  I upgraded from 8.1 that came with my PC.  

I used a key finder, it lists my 8.1 key.   Going to Control panel, system:

Your product key info:
Current product key ends in 8HVX7,  THIS IS NOT MY KEY.

Some of these don't actually work? The packages still remain in that list?

 

EDIT: Never mind, they are actually built-in, and it doesn't matter if you remove them, in a way, you are only hiding them. "Good job, Microsoft". Sigh.

Do I have to run the "Reserve you Win10" program from Windows update in order to obtain my free install key?  I dont want to install Win10 on my main system just yet, but I want to start collecting keys for friends/family and my others systems so I can install later when I want.  I DLed the Home/Pro ISOs so I am set for the software.

No, if you have a valid Windows 7 or 8 install you can download Windows 10 and install it directly. It will find your key and do the upgrade.

So the install process/ISO installs the key automatically....that is cool.  But how do I get the key for reinstalls/fresh installs?

the feature wasn't ready for prime time so it's currently disabled. should be active upon the next big update in november

You won't need a key to reinstall or do a clean install. As I understand it Windows 10 creates a unique hash for your hardware during the upgrade and stores it online. The next time you install Windows 10 on that hardware it will look up this info, recognize your machine and install without any need for keys.

What hardware does it look at?

Your motherboard and its components primarily (NIC, CPU, etc), and then I think things like your RAM, video card, and so on. It takes all of these parts and generates a unique identifier for your PC. You can usually change several components without any problems, like a new hard drive or video card. With XP through 8 changing your motherboard or too many other components would cause you to have to reactivate; sometimes you would have to do so by phone. I'm not sure yet how it will work with Windows 10 as far as upgrading components goes.

It's safe to delete Windows.old if I'm still on the Insider program, right? I'd like to recover some space on my disk...

Yes, it was the first thing I did using Disk Cleanup.

I've haven't read all 36 pages of this topic, but I have created the installation media for Windows 10.

Is there a way of doing a clean install with the ISO? Any guides created yet?

From what I have read, all you need to do is run the iso and follow the instructions. If you have a legit version of Windows 7 or 8 it will automatically activate. That is what I have read from other members anyway.
Brian one of the mods here, did it by updating his Windows 8 machine to Windows 10, then doing a iso based fresh install. He said it activated fine.

Cant refresh or reset from the DVD either, and people wonder why we have been asking for ISO's and codes so we can do a clean install the old fashioned (but tried. tested and working way)

I used the tool from that link to make an iso, as for some reason all my USB drives are MIA, doesnt help.

I don't know how everyone else is doing a clean install and getting it to activate, I have upgraded my laptop to Windows 10, tried a refresh, which failed, and then did a fresh install, only to have it tell me that Windows inst activated, and no matter what I try, it wont activate, so would ppl be so kind as to share how their are getting they clean installs activated?

 

Question: Are those that are getting clean installs activated, signing in with an MSA or a local account?

Why do you want to uninstall them? That's not a good idea, just change the default program in Settings>System>Apps to what you want to open files with and then remove those apps from the start menu. Uninstalling them will probably break something.

Yep, I did an in place upgrade using the ISO from Windows 8.1 (with bing) to Windows 10 home using the ISO (windows update kept failing), Once I made sure it was activated, I did a clean install booting from the ISO (I used Rufus), and the clean install activated straight away.

Well, I have a problem with Win10 on my Surface.  Going to the "Start" menu and selecting "Settings", I see the window opening but it close just as fast.  That's it...  I rebooted many time and it did not change anything.

So right now I can't go into settings....  That's nice....

Why do you want to uninstall them? That's not a good idea, just change the default program in Settings>System>Apps to what you want to open files with and then remove those apps from the start menu. Uninstalling them will probably break something.

I will keep most of them installed, the only reason I wanted to know was to be able to uninstall apps that leech data and processor without even me wanting, like the weather, mail and calendar apps.
