Seahorsepip Veteran Posted July 31, 2015 Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2015 I'm getting horrible disk performance. My laptop is a hybrid 500GB and 32GB SSD for cache. It worked great on Windows 8.1 but on Windows 10 it seems like any bit of disk usage bottlenecks the system to death. I have a feeling that is causing slow boot time too. Windows 8.1 would in less then 30 seconds. Now it takes at least 1 to 2 minutes. 30 seconds? 1 to 2 minutes? Something is clearly wrong here O.o, I boot in 2.2 seconds
Guest
Just take ownership of C:\Program Files\WindowsApps and delete those packages yourself... I did it back in Windows 8.1. I mean, they are built into the actual Windows image, so they can be reinstalled without an Internet connection at any time. Too bad there are some 8 and 8.1 leftovers in there. devHead
At some point, you did the setup for Cortana on your computer, but she hasn't yet on hers. Click on the magnifying glass on hers and go through the setup and it will change to Cortana. Ah, okay. Yeah, that hasn't been setup on hers yet. xplatinum
Three things I noticed that I don't like so far. When I first login, it takes around 10 seconds before I'm at the desktop (I'm running on SSD's). It was pretty much instant on 8.1. VPN. Can't get to the TCP/IP properties to disable default gateway tunneling. I have to go through powershell. VPN. When I want to connect it takes too many clicks. Click on systray icon. Click on the VPN connection (opens a window). Click on the connection AGAIN. Click on connect. It was 2 clicks before. Now it takes 4 and I have to do the same thing for disconnecting >.<
sajtion
That's because you have to complete the upgrade and let W10 go online and activate itself before you can do a clean install. It's upon first boot that it goes online and puts your hardware into it's entitlement database. Once you've completed an upgrade from a qualifying device then you can do a clean install. Dxdiag will only display the feature levels that your card actually supports, so if you only have a DX10 GPU that's all it will display. Some of the functions of DX12 like the low level hardware access will work on older cards. The API is present on your system, your card just doesn't support it fully. What you want to look at is where it says "Driver Model". If it's WDDM 2.0, your drivers are ready for DX12. very odd now its showing directx 12 although i updated to new beta drivers for windows 10. i guess now its ok

PGHammer
I'm currently at Mom's AIO, going through the HP Upgrade Process (the AIO is a refurbished HP Pavilion that sipped with 8.1 Core, but upgrades to 10 Home for free). It did all the upgrades except one (Intel RST - which will be installed post-reboot) - I'll post a followup after that.

drenegar
I'm having problems with Cortana not working after a reboot. I have to go in an uncheck and then recheck "Let Cortana respond to "Hey Cortana" every time I reboot. Note the checkbox stays checked after each reboot, it's just Cortana will not work until I do this trick. This is a bug but I cannot find anyone else reporting this issue. CG-88
Everything is going well so far for me on windows 10. Getting a nice bump gaming and loving the UI. protocol7
Haven't felt the urge to clean install yet. I had to reinstall a couple of small things after the upgrade but otherwise it's been smooth sailing. Reminds me of when I went from XP to 7. I expected to cling to XP a bit or maybe revert to it but I ended up dropping it shortly afterwards. Backed up my 7 partition before the upgrade but can't see myself going back now. The underlying OS feels great but the Modern apps are pants. Too barebones or plain flaky to replace the programs I've been using all this time. Hopefully in time they'll get better but I won't be relying on any of them for the time being.

The new UI is growing on me but I don't think I'll ever truly like it. And the only reason I upgraded was for DirectX 12 and WDDM 2.0. As for the Modern apps, I think they look awful. It reminds me of Windows Phone and I think it's far too simple-looking for PCs.
vcfan
I was browsing settings in Windows 10 and saw that you can change the location, but it's greyed out. Anyone know why? the other option is sd card, that's why its greyed out. you can technically change the location of where they install through a registry edit, but its not recommended, some stuff breaks last time I tried it. edit: I had to run explorer as system not admin then had full access to the folder without messing with permissions Edited August 1, 2015 by vcfan
Noir Angel
Getting something odd. Decided to format and do a clean install, and even after a clean install sfc/scannow reports corrupted files. xplatinum
Cross-post from another topic I replied to but I thought it fitted really well here too since it's the "official" topic. I'm really disappointed in how Windows 10 turned out to be. I had high expectations in regards to the polish of the OS, UI consistency and stability. Here's a couple reasons why I went back to Windows 8.1. Sound issues. Sometime sound stopped working altogether. Nothing happened when I clicked the volume icon in the systray either. Start menu not working. Clicking on it wouldn't do anything. I either had to restart or run a powershell command to resolve it. (fix) UI inconsistency Context menus have three different looks (looks unpolished IMO). I don't like being thrown from one window look to another. One time you use a "regular" styled window, you click on an option and you're thrown to a metro styled UI. UGH! Takes more clicks to achieve something. VPN is a prime example. Windows 8.1 (all happens in the same interface) Click network systray icon Click VPN connection Click Connect Windows 10 (needs two interfaces to achieve the same result) Click network systray icon Click VPN connection (opens new window) Click VPN connection Click Connect Why ?! It used to work fine with 3 clicks and a single window. No big deal but it these small details add up to an unpleasant experience. Cannot edit VPN TCP/IP properties. Double clicking or hitting properties doesn't work. I had to use a powershell command to disable passing traffic to default gateway. Again, why did this go unnoticed?! I used this fix but my symptoms were not the same. I didn't get any dialog box. Nothing happened at all when I double-clicked the protocol or hit properties. Windows became deactivated after a CMOS reset. Again, another what the ###### moment. Power went out so CMOS was reset. Windows started complaining about my activation. Thank god I had a saved CMOS profile. I still can't believe a simple CMOS reset botched my activation. Cannot disable automatic download and installation of updates. OK - we knew about this one but still. I'm a power-user, I push them all the time at work via WSUS. Denying me the ability to choose WHAT and WHEN I want to install my updates is very irritating to say the least. I'm sure there's more but that's off the top of my head. All that in less than a day of use. Doesn't feel like RTM at all! PS - I was running Windows 10 Pro.

Lamp0
Just as I suspected, Windows 10's forced auto updates has begun installing drivers that are older & less compatible than the ones I had installed. Never had it happen across several machines varying from Home, to Pro, to Enterprise. 3. Yes, a little annoying. 4. My VPN works the same way it did in 8.1, at least on Enterprise. I have my VPN connections showing up in the network popup. Perhaps its because I used the default VPN software in the OS? Edit: I see what you are saying. I am hoping they will fix that. 5. This is a "you" thing and not at all an issue on my machines. It is probably a side effect from upgrading. Edit: WTF? I thought it worked. This is a real problem. 6. Never seen that but I'll take your word for it. 7. Yep. Edited August 2, 2015 by adrynalyne
john_alex
I've been digging around Windows 10's settings and I found another weird setting enabled by default that could be a big security risk: Wi-Fi Sense ... basically they are sharing wi-fi passwords with your contacts on Facebook, Skype and Outlook. Apparently this setting is meant to allow these "friends" to easily connect to my network. The big problem here is that they are doing this by default without the user's permission. Also this means that If you give your wifi password to a single trusted friend the old fashion way, his windows 10 machine will share it with everyone of his/her contacts. Why in the world did they think I want to share my wi-fi password with everyone? Why is this setting enabled by default, hidden under several layers of settings and no mention about this anywhere? Why is Microsoft harvesting Wi-Fi passwords in the first place without the user's permission?v This is the 8th or 9th setting related to telemetry/monitoring/privacy invasion I found enabled by default. Time to go back to Windows 7. When people said that free is too god to be true, they were right. Edited August 2, 2015 by john_alex
