Does it really matter what the update it called itself?  It's just one big update for August and probably not the last one we'll see.   The real thing will be the bigger update in the fall (oct/nov) and what that brings to the table.  At this point they don't have to name these things anything specific, if they're just bug fixes it's not needed.  With red stone next year though, once you bring in new features then you'll have to name them something, be it 10.1 or something else.   I like the way the Xbox team does it with just using the month+year name for system updates.

Sure it matters. It lets us know what Microsoft considers a service release, and what kind of things it will contain and what MS considers a rollup.  This was a rollup.  Anyone who has kept up to date since rtm and GA has most if not all the patches the update contained.  Disappointing, right?

That's what I and others expected though, it was always going to be just bug fixes, people who want to see changes need to wait for the fall release.  These kind of rollups/cumulative updates never get specific names from MS, not going to change now.

If MS called it a service release, I would have expected them to call it as such upon release.  Only bloggers are labeling it as such.

That said, can you even identify what bugs were fixed?  As near as I can see, I only see security updates.  I'm pretty sure most people were expecting some notable bug fixes, you included.

Tom usually doesnt know what the hell he is talking about. He isnt a good source and is often wrong about alot of stuff.

But even Thurrot wrote an article about it, if that update wasn't SR1 he would have likely posted an update by now.

If the indexing never finishes running could it be a case of permissions not being right?  Was this a clean install or a upgrade?  Some times, over the years, when I've upgraded my PCs at times, for whatever reason, permissions go out of whack.  The index service should be able to access everything regardless but maybe not?  It seems weird to me.

If I go in the indexing options it shows that indexing has finished. Also I only removed folders so it shouldn't be a permission issue, it's like the start menu expects the user profile folder to be indexed and only re-adding it gets rid of the message.

Using 10 for a day now, so very early impressions:

-Upgrade didn't work. Tried it twice, both times there were issues with the graphics, the screen would flicker like crazy, and a few seconds after logging in, I'd get kicked back to the lockscreen. Did a clean install after the second attempt.

-The UI is a touch (wink wink) better than 8.1's. I like windowed modern apps, and the start menu is decent. The new action center is a very welcome addition.

-It's more inconsistent than ever, though. If 8 felt like two operating systems slapped together, this one feels like three or four. So many inconsistencies and UI elements clashing with each other, it's not even funny.

-Modern apps are still largely unusable and unstable.

-Everything else feels like 8.1. It feels unfinished, but it works. Nothing to write home about.

Overall, can't say I'm disappointed, but if this is Microsoft's big bet on attracting developers, good luck, they're going to need it.

Well, while they won't change it marketing wise, the version number will change regardless.  So we'll know that way, expect it to be a higher build like, 10800 or something.

Apple just says OS X, but increments numbers.  Latest is 10.11.

Here's a cool thing I noticed about the Wallpaper background app that is in Windows 10.  If you select an image that is larger than your Desktop and choose 'Center' as the fit, it will show the entire image outside the borders of your desktop so you can see how much will not be on it.  Now a nice feature they could add in the future would be to let you move that image around so that you can place what you want on the Desktop.

Whenever my computer is idle for a few minutes (for example, I was away from keyboard for about 7) a high cpu-consuming process is started. It's usually TiWorker.exe or rundll32.exe, 99% processor usage, my CPU fan is at 100%. I once left with the task manager open and when I came back I stayed to see how long the process is going to use all my power (both CPU power and electrical ;)). After 15 minutes I got bored and moved my mouse. The process was killed almost instantly.

Nothing like this happened on Windows 8.1. My current 10 installation is an upgrade from 8.1. Any ideas? I understand the operating system is doing some stuff in the background when the PC is idle but to use 99% CPU all the time is a little crazy...

I agree, they let you do that on WP8.1, maybe mobile 10 as well, when you pick the image for the lock screen and it's bigger, you can move it around etc.

I did an upgrade from windows 7 which didn't go too well, so I installed win 10 again over the top of win 10, big mistake, it overwrote my win 7 backup so I cant roll back....but hey hoo, any how win 10 seems to be running ok at the moment having done the repair install I mentioned previously, however i have a little thing annoying me at the moment & that is the start menu, all the win 10 apps that came with it are showing the correct icons, but 90% of the apps/software that I had on before the upgrade are showing a blank generic icon, no matter what I do I cannot get the correct icon for each programme to show, all the apps work, just the stupid icon not correct, anyone know of a fix?

Why would you install over the top, just go in and do a Reset PC under settings>update and security>recovery.

Yeah I realise that now, I had a blonde moment , luckily I have a true image just before the upgrade, so if worst comes to worst I can use that, Also looking at disk management I hove noticed I have a new partition (recovery)& some un-partitioned space that was not there before the upgrade  , whats going on ....?

Yes, it's up to date. There weren't so many updates to warrant processes like TiWorker to work so intensely for so long and so often. Maybe I'll reinstall Win10 from scratch?

14 years have passed and Windows Update service finally turns itself off when it's not being used saving ~70MB of RAM. Woohoo!

Upgraded from Win 8.1 last week. Yesterday encountered user profile corrupted, can't open start menu, setting, and most icon in taskbar. Restored from system protection, now can't launch Adobe software and Edge browser went missing. F**K!

For those a little irritated about no games/having to pay for games like Solitaire, there is a way to copy/install the Win7 games on Win10.  Just download a file and run and install.  Works like a charm.  I would post the link here but not sure of the legalities.

I've been using a modified hosts file since Win8 to block many, many external ad sites and I haven't had any ads in Solitaire since. So either that is working, or Microsoft just hasn't turned on ads in Solitaire yet.
