[OFFICIAL] Windows 10 (Build 10.0.10240) discussion & upgrade experience

Anyone know how to force the upgrade to start?  Have a laptop that downloaded all the files yesterday yet I can see failures in Windows Update overnight just as others have.

You can use ISO instead. This method is faster than the WU crap.

And now the desktop update also failed with 80240020.

Forcing the update with wuauclt just doesn't seem to work.

Try the ISO instead.. and choose upgrade option for free offer.

Oh that.. Yes. I remember now.

Anyone know if there is a product key for insiders? I did a clean install on my HTPC last night thinking that I wouldn't need a product key if I remained an insider. However, it is showing that it needs to be activated. Will I have to erase and install Windows 8.1 and then upgrade or can I just enter my WIndows 8.1 key?

I downloaded the ISO from MSDN and updated an office laptop (ThinkPad running OEM Windows 7). Update was successful and Windows 10 Pro was automatically activated although when running wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey it didn't show a key.

You don't need a key anymore because you already install a build every time it releases when you started Insider program.

You can install a new build anytime without any key as long as you are staying in Insider program.

If you opt out of Insider program, your build expires unless you have a valid copy of Windows 7 or 8.x which you can upgrade it to Windows 10 ... there is no expiration for this method for upgrading to 10 from Windows 7 or 8.x

I got mine to start downloading by doing the following:

Delete contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder

Run wuauclt.exe /updatenow twice in command prompt as admin

Time to see if it will actually install :)

Thanks this works great! Upgraded from Windows 8.1 got my Windows 10 key now for a fresh iso install of Windows 10!

I really hope this isn't a huge let down. Also, since MS dropped WMC, do I have to use plex now?

You use Plex or similar app for W10 or stay with Windows 7 or 8.1 with WMC.

Unless you have Xbox One which is great for entertainment.

I'm sure I saw somewhere that WMC users would get some free dvd playback component when updating to Windows 10. It's not the full experience but at least it covers that much.

Edit: it's in the faq:

While Windows Media Center is not part of Windows 10, we are providing a free DVD playback app7 in Windows 10 called Windows DVD Player that will be installed after the first Windows Update.

Ah I didn't know that..  Nice.

Thanks for the heads up.

The GWX icon has mysteriously disappeared from my desktop today, does that mean no Windows 10 for me?:(

Same thing happened to my home PC running Windows 8.1. I looked at my update history and saw that multiple attempts to start the upgrade had failed.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Download the media creation tool for your x86 or x64 OS, then run it.. select "Upgrade this PC now"

Guys if you are having problems, the Media Creation Tool found here - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

When launched from your system, gives you an option to just upgrade without making the media.

From the FAQ you posted.

Catchy name for the program...leaves no doubt what the intended purpose is.  :)

That's what I thought, but it is prompt me for a key to activate. My account is my insider account but it still wants a product key to activate.

So I did the force update like other said and it downloaded fine, was preparing then gave me a message saying something needed my attention before continuing.. I clicked the button and it went back to the Windows 10 reserved screen in windows update.....

Same happened to me. I ended up forcing the update.

The thing is, Windows 10 was never downloaded. I just turned on my computer this morning, and the icon was gone; no update to force.

You did the clean install, didn't you?

If so, that's why it asked you for a key.

Use the upgrade option so you don't need a key.

If your HDD/SSD is empty, then you will need a key for the installation.
