Wireless printer setup (without router)

Question

Hi.

I need to be able to setup my actual Canon MP495 wireless printer to work directly with the laptop without using a router..sincer the laptop has a ethernet wired connection(on work). Since now (home)..it worked with a router but..I won't be able to apply all this scenario. Do you think that will work?

Thanks for any suggestion.

I'm not sure I understand the past situation. You're saying that you had your printer connected to your laptop via an Ethernet cable?

And now you want to make it wireless at home, but you don't have a router?

Does the printer support adhoc capabilities?

Since now it has been working throught the router.

From now on..the router is excluded..

I think it doesn't support adhoc but maybe there're some tricks..

An "Ad-hoc connection," which establishes a direct connection to the computer over a wireless connection without using an access point, is not supported. Be sure to prepare an access point.

Pretty sure that printer has USB, plug it into your machine that way if you don't have wireless??  Who does not have wireless at home?  You do understand you could pick up a wireless router for like $20 be it you use for your internet or not.

Yes.. the printer works with USB too but I need it to work wireless there..

Who does not have wireless at home?

I have wireless at home but will be used in a place where the laptop is connected to the internet/network throught a cable.

The laptop has wireless..of course :) .. Any free alternatives to connectify ?

what..  What does it matter if your laptop is connected to a cable or not.. Is there wireless in the area, then your printer connects to the wireless which is the same network as your wire..  This is like 99.9% of homes.. Mine is on its own segment and would have to allow through my firewall, etc..  But mine is not your typical home setup ;)

Are you wanting to use this printer at work??

Just because the laptop is wired doesn't mean the printer can't be on Wifi. It's the same network.

. No wireless in area to connect at.

Then you have 2 choices use usb cable or provide wireless.. Wireless can be provided with a $20 router.

Or get a new printer that you can use network wire with. Or one that supports ad-hoc, which I would not even try to do - just use a cable or get a $20 wifi router and use it for a wireless network.. What location these days has no wireless?  So your work has no wireless network?

Kind of really defeats the purpose of "laptop" now doesn't it when you have to connect a wire - might as just have a desktop ;)
