deck
I can't seem to figure out how to 'Play To' my Xbox One from Windows 10. I have searched the interwebs but nobody seems to be talking about the Cast To/Play To functionality. And, odd, Windows help (that I've found) doesn't really talk about it either. Let me explain: I can Cast To my Xbox One with no issue. Right-click on a video file, Cast To, Xbox One. Full screen, full resolution playing on my Xbox while I can still play with my computer. What I can't do, which I was able to do very easily with Windows 8, is Play or Cast To my Xbox One from apps - like Edge, IE or Hyper for YouTube (which is currently broken, but that's another story). How it worked on Win8: I like to browse YouTube from my Surface and then play the video directly on my Xbox One, without ever opening the Xbox YouTube app or doing anything on the Xbox. While doing this, I can still use my Surface and do other things while the video, which I triggered from the tablet, plays uninterrupted. I could also stop and cycle through the video on the tablet with the results shown on the TV. I should add, it would play the videos at their native full resolution. Widescreen = widescreen, no matter the device. This was done by simply swiping from the right, selecting Devices, and then Xbox One (or something to that effect). It worked great and I loved it. It was how I interacted with my Xbox for much of my video content. This is what I can't do anymore. What's happening now on Win10: I can stream to the Xbox if I turn on the Media Streaming app - but that just duplicates or extends my screen. This is not what I want and not the behaviour that worked so well in Win8. Also, I have to manually turn on the app (whereas my Roku in the other room is always waiting for a connection). In any case, the behaviour is inferior; I can't multitask and I really have no interest in extending my display because the resolution gets all screwy. So while this is way to play content on my Xbox One from the Surface, it's at the 'streaming' resolution; videos can't play full screen on my TV and it's basically just me plugging my Surface into a projector. All this is done by swiping from the right, selecting Connect, and then looking for the devices to appear (only the Roku appears for me, even while the Xbox is one). All sharing and streaming services are setup. Both my Win10 PC and Surface see the Xbox as a Play device (even before i ensure that the sharing was turned on). Can anyone shed some light for me? Is this feature gone or am I just misunderstanding how it has changed? Thanks! slinky333
Unfortunately now it's up to the apps themselves to provide the 'cast to' functionality. See the builtin "Movies and TV" app for local videos, and "Tubecast" (paid) for YouTube videos.
