AmazingRando
So I have a machine with 8.1 currently confirmed for the 10 update. And I got thinking, why not just upgrade to the Insider Preview on it now and get it over with? The Insider Preview will turn into the official Windows 10 build, correct? Or is it worth waiting for the actual version of Windows 10 to come down the pipe thru the updater and just do it then? Thoughts? For free offer, just wait until 29th if you already reserved a copy of Windows 10 for your Windows 7 or 8.x device. If you are on Insider program, you can stay after RTM as long as you are interested to keep receiving the new builds for testing. If you want to quit the Insider program, just click on stop insider builds button in the settings if you are on secondary device. Otherwise do the wipe and install Windows 7 or 8.x if you want free offer without insider program on your production device. AmazingRando
So if I do an Insider Build install over my current copy of 8.1, it will update to RTM and then I can opt out of further insider builds? Essentially getting Windows 10 a few days before the 29th (although not entirely complete until after the 29th). I have 4 retail copies of Windows 8 that I bought at a deep discount. If I spin them up in virtual machines and let the do the free Windows 10 upgrade, do you think that will be enough to keep them as Windows 10 even past July 29, 2016? I dont want to miss out on the free release window, but I dont have them on any machines right now. The Insider Preview versions have a limited lifetime but full release versions will work forever. As long as you upgrade to release versions some time in the next year, you'll be set. Just wait for Windows to tell you when it's ready to update, if you try to force it then it's unlikely to work properly.
