Alright, we actually require by procedure to test all updates one at a time with our software we develop....

How exactly do we go about doing this in windows 10? They removed the old Windows Update UI that let you install updates as you choose in the pro version.

If there isn't a way, how exactly are others going to test driver builds (when a kernel update happens) and .NET programs (one of the more frequently patched items)

I know right now we are stuck wondering how to go forward with our build and test labs since we have to support windows 10 for customers

I thought 10 Pro gave you the option of picking updates?

Basically Microsoft are expecting businesses to use the Pro version, not the home version. If they're not going to allow users to choose the updates in the Pro version though, they're [Microsoft] really going to hurt themselves for the exact reasons that you've mentioned.

No, we can't find an option anywhere, and we've been looking... everything so far has been all or nothing... you can say install or don't install all but that is it.. in the home version you don't even have that option it just happens on a schedule... enterprise seems to work the same as pro

Ah, but that's because it is still the preview build and Microsoft still want everyone to be using all their updates. I would imagine the option will appear for Pro users when the OS is officially released.

Wasn't there an 'Updates for Business' option that allowed you to pick the updates? Probably in the Enterprise version?

I think that is just a replacement for WSUS

Which you can use anyway to push specific updates now.

we were just told via our MSDN contact that there isn't a way in windows 10 pro to pick updates individually, as that feature was "removed"... MS want's us apparently to install all at once either when they choose (home edition with no choice to say no) or install all at once when we pick with the option to say no to all in pro...

I'm hoping that the MSDN person who gave us this info today is wrong, but at this point seeing no signs of it in the UI I'm a bit worried as we install and uninstall patches a lot.. and using the Update UI was a lot easier then searching KB's and manually downloading and doing it

Windows 10 is easier to use. With the right vpn paired with it, life is easier. But why is it that most of the Windows 10 applications are not free?

uh, what?

That can't be right. I know Microsoft don't seem to mind shooting themselves in the foot now and again, but I can't think of any company that would settle for such an idea.

Like you, here's hoping your contact has either been misinformed or Microsoft goes back on that plan soon.

I guess we will find out in 16 days...... ugh

I do SCCM updates for my company and I have small "Evaluation" groups of systems as well as a collection that targets only my machine. Obviously removal of the options in Windows update is stupid and makes work harder but you can still do it with SCCM. When the available updates pop up just select custom and only check off the one you want to install.

I do that with my updates sometimes for some updates as I know no reboot will be required. We have some older apps that we use in old Citric Farms so gotta keep those running. I'll just clone a system and fire away :)

But yes, I hate WU in W10 also. I like that it will force some users to install but how about choices!!

we aren't talking about deployment across a large area, we are talking about individual workstations installing and removing patches for testing

Well, that's what we use for testing of Windows patches but OK.

Same as we got told, we looked into it see what impact it would have on our schools we look after, told the same thing, individual patching and choice of will be gone. Not "as much" a problem as for some as we will simply manage by WSUS but not great.....

only enterprise will be able to pick and choose.

home users can defer by telling windows they have a metered net connections which will stop them been automatically downloaded.

pro users can defer for up to 90 days but cannot pick and choose which, just defer all feature updates.

I feel Microsoft have gone backwards, whats happening here is they copying the inferior android and ios.  Even more bad is they tend to include drivers as essential updates which I have in the past always marked as hidden.

You can choose not to upgrade drivers from Windows Update: Control Panel, System, Advanced System Settings, Hardware Tab, Device Installation Settings, "No Let me choose what to do"

Also most places that really need/use Pro and up will run their own WSUS server or the new server that replaces WSUS, I forget the name. They can pick and choose anything they want.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. A few of the people here just want to find something to complain about constantly.

gawd we hated WSUS felt like we were repairing it more then using it, we switched to SCCM (which uses WSUS in the background anyways) and our vendor really messed us up with that... we thought we bought licenses MS came back and audited us and said we weren't licensed correctly even after spending $60k on the darn product... apparently we only bought workstation licenses and server licenses were WAY more expensive... even though we thought we bought them when we told our vender (was PC Connection at the time) what we needed, they told us oh yeah you have coverage for 50 servers... yeah until the audit 4 months later MS told us to pay up... now management refuses to ever use SCCM again... now we are using Lumension patch management, but they are saying they don't know how they will deal with windows 10 patches..... *rips out hair*

Why do they have a photo of some gratuitous hot looking female on their website? Sites like that annoy the ###### out of me. Take http://www.teamviewer.com where there is a gratuitous stupid photo of some  chick pointing at a box ...  which is also one of the worst Photoshop cut outs I've ever seen.

Enterprise has the option to disable specific updates just like windows 8.

yes, but pro, which is meant for workstations to start with, should also have it.... I just have a feeling they want to push businesses to enterprise since their feature set for enterprise was dwindling after they moved bitlocker to pro in 8

So a stock photo annoys you? You must hate MS's sites then :p

Yeah, how dare people be peed off that Microsoft are removing people's autonomy over their computers, we should just do whatever out technological lord and saviour says.

Microsoft: Where asinine is the new black.
