Windows XP Task Bar Problems

Recommended Posts

I am running Windows XP Pro, and just recently I have started having a problem with program icons disappearing from my task bar. They are programs that are in the Startup group. I checked "MSCONFIG" and thay are all still check off to start with windows, but they no longer appear in my taskbar. I also tried uninstalling thes progs and re-installing them -- then they reappear in my task bar, but as soon as I re-boot, they disappear again. Can someone please help ?? This is driving me nuts !!!

Thank you, "dreamz" and "frease" for your suggestions. I tried them, but still no luck. "Dreamz" you are exactly correct in understanding what my problem is. Some, but not all, of the icons for programs that start with Windows suddenly disappeared from the system tray. For example, the icons for my ATI Video controller, "GOBACK", and my popup killer, have dissappeared. My clock, Nortem System Works, and Sygate Firewall icons still appear. That's what's weird --> why did some disappear and others didn't?? Is it possible that my registry got messed up badly and is causing this problem ?? If so, any suggestions for a good tool to fix it?? I am using the Norton System Works WinDoctor, but it doesn't seem to do any good. Also, is it possible that Windows XP itself got corrrupted somehow --- I hope not -- I'm not looking forward to re-installing everything!! This whole problem started after I downloaded and installed updates for Roxio Easy Cd & DVD Creator 6 Platinum. After I installed these updates, my computer wouldn't reboot normally, I had to use "last known good configuration" to boot, and then this problem started.

I've had the same problem from time to time, with both XP RTM and XP SP1. Pretty much, I've always ignored the problem and waited for windows to notice them again.

If that's not an option; after signing into windows, logoff, sign in to your account, and all your taskbar icons should be there.

I find that after a week or two windows catches on that you want them back and starts to include them naturally.

Go Figure.
