What are your biggest Windows 10 bugbears?

Recommended Posts

The modern apps (RTM) for Edge, Insider hub and notification center have been extremely irritable for me...most times they start and shut down in a flash...they rarely work and I really want Edge and the hub working.....(worked well only in one build for me, 10140) Guess I'll have to wait it out...Cheers

1. Can't configure quiet hour for action center.

2. Still need to install AHCI/RAID drivers by Intel for my internal SSDs to not appear in the safely remove hardware list. Last thing i want is to misclick on of those.

3. Still need to install outdated drivers by JMicron for my external eSata port to actually work and my internal blu-ray drive to not show in the safely remove hardware list (connected internally on the same controller as the eSata port). Those sort of things should work out of the box with the drivers provided by Windows imo. Crossing my fingers the outdated JMicron drivers for windows 8 will not give me trouble.

4. Even if my OneNote for desktop app part of Office 365 is set as the default note app windows 10 integration still try to use the app version of OneNote.

5. Still rely on the control panel for some of the options. Some of the options are deeply buried.

6. The new Windows Update. It needs works.

Okay, for a start -- I'm sure there are more I'm not remembering ---

- The full screen version of the Start Menu is awful. Microsoft decided it hates vertical scrolling and using spacing and font size for presentation for some reason, I guess "waste of space." At any rate, they might as well have left it out as an option.

- The only option for All Apps is a narrow, cramped list you have to tediously scroll through.

- Scrolling the Start Menu with the scroll wheel (or the All Apps list) is slow if you have a long list. It should have better sensitivity to gestural movement.

- There's no multi-select / organization mode in the Start Menu from what I can tell. It makes reorganization of your tiles much messier.

- Tiles don't auto-arrange if some are removed.

- The Recently Added list never shows more than one item.

- The Photos app only allows you to view by date, and albums it creates for you. There's no by folder browsing, and you can't create your own albums.

- You can't restrict the live tile for the Photos app to display only a particular album, or pin a particular album as a tile.

- The Xbox avatar pic on the live tile is pretty small.

- Small tiles use the tile graphic instead of the app icon; this makes small tiles for things like Solitaire look pretty ugly. (I tend to hate the noisy games tiles anyway, but its worse, and pointless, in small tile mode)

- The Mail app doesn't let you set no background picture. You have to set one.

- (From W8) The Mail & Calendar apps don't show any dashboard info on the live tile if you don't have any alerts, making it an ugly use of space most of the time.

- In the Store, if you do a search, then click "Show All" for a category, then click on the back button, it brings you back to the original search page, rather than the second "Show All" page.

- You can't use your scroll wheel to browse categories.

I know people will say "that's nothing" but seriously why do we need splash screens for everything up to and including PRINTING! I don't need a splash screen when I tell something to print in edge....

splashes where for long running loads, not something that takes half a second at most to load...

I've not used Groove and Photos apps that much but Film & TV really is a crappy app. There's like no option at all. The app doesn't resume play where it stopped the last time. No out of the box non-embedded subtitles support. That's like not even starting to be slightly remotely close to PowerDVD in term of quality. Even as a basic app Film and TV ain't good enough imo. Photos is probably okay since the old Windows Photo Viewer was really basic anyway. As for Groove I've not used it much and I've not restored my iTune library yet after my clean install to test it but by just toying around I would say it's not any better than iTune. Again it's just a first impression but so far I prefer iTune than Groove. So far Apps are really lackluster. Not as much as Windows 8 but there's still a long way to go to make then option I might consider using.

Here's something I can't figure out.  Reinstalled Win10 on my desktop and now things like the built-in OneNote are stuck in read-only mode.  Says something about being unable to verify my Office 365 subscription.  Which is something I've never had!  I can still create and save notes on my Win10 tablet.  I then double checked with the free uber-simple Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps from the Store and they have the same issue too!  They all say they are in read-only mode yet work fine elsewhere. -_-

It's normal for your internal drives to appear under safely remove; that's one of the added abilities of AHCI - it supports hot plugging of devices

One of my biggest bugbears at the moment is that a significant number of my installed app don't show up on the Start menu, or on a search. I've uninstalled and reinstalled them, they just don't show up. One example of this is the Arduino IDE. It installed and showed up just fine on Win 7. Nowhere to be seen on Win 10. Really annoying. There is apparently a known bug whereby if you have more than 512 installed apps this can happen, but I have less than that.

Oh, and there are so many visual inconsistencies that just make for a little bit of a mess.

I only have a couple to be honest that I have come across so far, Live tiles are not neither live nor accurate... I cant get the weather tile to show a location other than London, which is only a few hundred miles away from my current location. But my biggest irritation is my ELAN Touchpad (Synaptics) not allowing for two finger scrolling. It is really becoming an annoyance now, but hopefully drivers will be updated in due course.

What about you, what things have you come across that annoy you. Now I'm not talking about failed installs or error codes, those are bugs not bugbears. :)

I ran into this problem on a few laptops with synaptics touchpads that I upgraded. It's caused by having an older synaptics driver, see if your manufacturer has a newer driver available. In my case the newest I could find were for windows 8 but they worked and resolved the issue.

I've just tried to manage some photos I've taken of games console related stuff, holy heck - how did they let this Photos app RTM?

  1. Tried to delete a photo in preview mode, nope - does nothing.
  2. Return to gallery, click refresh, nope - still there.
  3. Select in gallery view, click delete - unable to complete action at this time message, still there.
  4. Check file system, FILE IS STILL THERE?!??! Delete file.
  5. Click refresh, nope - still there.
  6. Open file that I have deleted.
  7. Photo app crashes & burns,- refuses to re-launch.

I go have some dinner, come back and it's showing me a view of placeholder images.

Give up and Google for the application file handler keys to restore Windows Photo Viewer from WIndows 8.1:

I dislike the inconsistent UI. I don't ever want to open control panel but a few things are still not in Settings which is frustrating considering how long they have been working on it. Even if they keep the old control panel way around also for compatibility I would still like every option in the Settings app.

I hate that I cannot set OneNote (desktop) to open when I select Note from the Action Center! God so annoying.

I want more UI colour options for the title bar as white is just horrible. Thankfully Firefox 40 (beta) always paints a grey title bar so it isn't so horrible to look at late at night.

I want to be able to make better use of the dead space on the start menu

And I would like to be able to easily customise/remove items from the File Explorer side bar

Um, easily changed?

Wasted space? You mean the "commonly used applications" is "wasted space"?

Why are you wasting space with all of those tiles while complaining about space that is useful? Those should all be on your commonly used list, not pasted on normal sized tiles.

That area is filled for me with most used and recently added.

yeah, for me with a realtek chip the audio that use to be very loud at 25% is now barely hearable at 100% with the speakers turned up all the way also...

Same issue. On the trial builds I first though the drivers must have been incompatible it wasn't until I started playing around with settings that I realised everything was working fine I just needed to max all volume to hear a slight noise. Apart from that

Mail not showing all accounts in the main view as 8 did (or the option for linked inbox)
As mentioned Control Panel V Settings :?
The great UI mismatch, even apps don't look similar!

Hard to show the use of live tiles, but there isn't a bit that is necessarily wasted. I have my scheduled appointments, e-mail, news, weather, and other things immediately. You could always cut off the tiles section, but you'd lose some function.

I would generally prefer to have the All Apps to be higher up and be able to organize things...

Startup and shutdown times seem to vary considerably. Some times it is instantaneous, sometimes it just hangs and hangs. But, I willingly upgraded and I accept the little bits and pieces that might be a little annoying.

All things considered, I am impressed how smoothly it has all been. I think it isn't a trivially feat to deliver what has been delivered.

Well, I'd love to know why it now takes like 12 steps and two separate windows to connect to a VPN...

Throwing all of my carefully organized programs from my Start Screen into a single MASSIVE group in the Start Menu was a bit of a niggle.  Trying to organize the programs in the Start Menu could be a bit easier.  It can certainly be frustrating.

The bizarre removal of Norton was just that...

The Start Menu, Cortana, and Notifications panel feel like they could still be optimized...  I chalked the lag and unresponsiveness during the Preview to my running it within a VM, but now I see that wasn't the case...

I would love to be able to expand my Start Menu to be two groups wide.  I have the screen real estate, why shouldn't that be my choice?

My scrollbar seems a bit wonky from time to time.  Haven't been able to isolate that just yet.

I'd like to be able to remove apps from the All Apps list. Or at least be able to drag a file into a folder holding types (Games, Media, etc) instead of just sprawling them out by letters. For some categories, this works (Games seem to go to the proper Games folder), but others... not so much.

Judging by WP10, its a precursor to gating all the apps behind a subscription which is a terrible decision.  If they can't throw a device license on their own hardware, f uthem  That might be the last straw for me, particularly OneNote gating.

Who is your mail provider?  Works fine here.

Really? I never found the Mail app on W8 to work as well as webmail and it seems no better now on W10. Notifications are spotty and it always seems half-a-day behind my webmail or phone. I just don't use it.

I never have new emails displayed in 8 unless I have the app open, I usually have my phone nearby so I hear an alert on it when I open mail it displays no new emails but within a few seconds that changes.

Another gripe about 10, CIRCLES!

Right clicking a file in the Search Results doesn't provide a the full context menu.

The Notifications icon in the Notification Area constantly indicates there are new notifications even though there are none when you open up the panel.

Wasted space? You mean the "commonly used applications" is "wasted space"?

It is if you don't want or need to display them. By the time you've been using W10 long enough for that list to be meaningful you will have pinned all of your most used apps to the Taskbar or Start, making the list completely redundant. I always assumed that was why they got rid of it in Vista and replaced it with a list you could populate yourself. Or am I missing something here?

ATM my biggest issue is with the Mail App... Trying to setup my IMAP corporate email.

Can't set it up by using the "Other Account POP, IMAP" method. I type my email address firstname.lastname@domain.pt and password, tells me to use the advanced method.

On the advanced method, there's no email address field, only username, but I don't want to setup my email with username@domain.pt (the username is only used for validation purposes).

Anyone else having this issue or noticed this, maybe I am missing something?
