Output smart content audio to receiver via HDMI

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So I'm a bit of a newbie with home cinema. I have a Sony STRDN-1000 7.1 receiver, and I've been using it with a 37" LG LCD screen for a few years with no issues. I have HDMI inputs from my Chromecast, Blu-Ray and Sky+ box going into the receiver, and being displayed on the TV (standard stuff). I've now replaced the TV with this and can easily emulate my old set up by just putting the HDMI cable into HDMI 1. Again, simple stuff.

But what I now want is for the audio from the smart apps on the TV to be sent to the receiver. Can I do this with the HDMI cable? Or do I need to use an RCA output from the TV, and use an audio input on the receiver? Fewer cables the better...

You can either use an optical cable if your TV supports output via it (or even has the port, more than likely it does) OR if your TV/receiver supports ARC [http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/arc.aspx] you can use it that way.
