Ubuntu 15.04: How To Play DVDs/Blu-rays? (URGENT)

Recommended Posts

$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

That package pretty much includes all the formats you'll ever want. It's one of the first you should get after first installing *ubuntu's. Here's some more info about dvd playing:

What is a good video player to get on Ubuntu?  I've used VLC on Windows, but have sometimes run into problems with it.  I hear Totem is worth checking out, but have never heard of it until recently, more or less the same can be said about Kaffeine.

Well, I've done:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

And the native player still doesn't let me see the DVD in the drive.

So, what are my options at this point?

EDIT: Even VLC which I've installed is not playing the DVD, it runs the drive like it's going to start reading it then stops. If I can't get it working then I'll go back to Windows!

Did you read this for DVDs?

Also, read this for Blu-Rays...

As a last resort, I'd try ripping the discs using MakeMKV and using VLC to play them back.
