Zoom7000
With Black Friday fast approaching, I've had my eye on the Samsung UE40H6400 for an awful long time. However, recently I have come across the Philips 40PUT6400. Now, I was pretty settled with the Samsung as I will be using the TV primarily as a computer monitor and also as a television. I'll be mainly using Windows applications, with the odd games here and there. (FIFA, GTA, Need for Speed etc, no first person shooters! lol) I have seen a 40" TV used as a Windows desktop at 1080p and I was quite happy with the result. However, I'm torn as to whether I should consider "future proofing" myself and going with the Philips as it offers 4K. I'm not entirely sure how a 40" 4K TV will look as a Windows desktop, but I've seen a few YouTube videos that say it is a positive experience. The Samsung has rave reviews everywhere I've looked, but I've hardly come across any reviews for the Philips. I do like that it comes with Android TV, which means I can download and install Kodi directly to the TV, although I am not too bothered with any smart features at all as the TV will be permanently connected to my PC. I need at the minimum, Freeview HD, 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports which both TVs come with. The Samsung does have 3D, but I can't ever see myself using this and I don't have the content for it anyway. The only area the Samsung wins over the Philips is the CPU. The Samsung has a Quad Core CPU, whereas the Philips only has a Dual Core CPU. Will this make much of a noticeable difference? So, the question is, which TV should I go with? I've been set on the Samsung all year, but I'm now quite inclined towards the Philips. I won't be buying another TV for a long time, so it is a bit of an investment and the 6 year warranty from Richer Sounds has me covered on that front. Zoom7000
mah just opening your options... never can be too closed. Also Phillips is overhyped and has a ton of issues I did say in the opening post that I'm not at all interested in smart features as I will have my PC permanently connected to the TV. So, I don't see what a streaming stick solves for me. What I am hoping to do is buy a 40" TV to replace my current 23" TV to double up as a Windows monitor and television. You say the Philips is overhyped and has a ton of issues, where have you seen this? I can't find any reviews/criticisms whatsoever. remixedcat
RokuTV is a TV, you got TCL or Hisense models with Roku as the Operating system. I have a TCL one and it's been solid. tsupersonic
Typically TV's are terrible as a PC display so you're better off with a computer monitor for those purposes. That said, nothing/no one can stop you from doing so. What kind of computer are you plugging in? I only ask because pushing games at 4k is demanding on the highest of settings. RE: Smart TV's - just don't bother. They typically don't get updated. If you're using the TV as a TV, get a streaming device (Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, Xbox/PS etc.). You'll be much better off with a streaming device as they'll have more features and have long support cycles. Out of both of those, I'd take the Samsung. The CPU will make a difference, especially watching 4K video and browsing through the UI. A faster processor will always make a difference, the more cores the better as long as the software is properly optimized for it. My 60" Samsung plasma makes an AWESOME HDMI computer monitor. Plugging a computer straight in isn't enough. Tweak the TV's settings and it'll improve massively. I work with TV's in my daily career to board level, I always use Engineer mode and the correct adjustment tools to get it all perfect, even tweaking the CPU and firmware via EEPROM. The smart bit I can agree with. The apps get abandoned after a while. I like Android TV as that's a good replacement for standard Smart TV's.. Eh TV's generally have bad response times and input lag, compared to a nice computer monitor. This may impact OP's gaming performance. You should always calibrate your display! HellboundIRL
If the primary use is a monitor then the 4k seems like the better option to me. I have the Philips BDM4065UC 40 inch monitor and it is fantastic to use. I don't know how this TV would compare but I'd still take it over 1080. Obviously neither are ideal monitors but you already know that anyway.
