I invested in Sonos equipment about 6 years ago (A Connect:Amp in my bedroom attached to a pair of Tannoy speakers and a Connect in my lounge attached to my Home Theatre Receiver).  It has been solid and very reliable.  As a company, I have found their customer service to be impeccable.

Are you planning to play from your network or stream?

The only annoying thing is that they don't sell a remote control, with control expected from an Android or iOS phone or tablet.

more from my netowrk than anything else

So my wifes ipod dock is a little past its best, we have all the music on the network anyway so i am thinking

Pair of speakers in the living room, pair in the bedrom and pai in the kitchen

a connect in the living room with  soundbar for the TV

I LOVE the Sonos stuff, So much I emailed them and asked to be a Beta tester and had to sign an NDA.I really wanted one of the limited edition Sonos Blue but I couldn't get hold of one. The sound quality and its integration with Spotify is second to None. Windows App and Android App are definitively the best IMHO.

I like Sonos equipment (a lot!) however they are definitely expensive. To pack out a few rooms you will end up spending about $3,000 (2 x Play5, 1 Play bar and sub, couple Play 1s and Play 3s).

Obviously you do not "need" to get all these speakers, just nice to have. I do like them however as I mentioned :)

I however went the "cheaper" route and got the LG Music Flow speakers. So far I have a soundbar H6 and H5 and H3 speakers. I will get another H3 and maybe an H4 for portable use (outside and around the house).

I don't think they are as good as Sonos but I think they sound pretty good.

I have a Sonos play 5 and love it. Previously I had a Logitech squeezebox but had endless trouble with it and could never really get it to do what I wanted. Now I use the Sonos with Spotify and TuneIn if I want radio and it works like a dream. I plan to get a few more, probably some Play 1's for other parts of the house.

I intend on just building the collction up so wont be buying all at once

So gonna start with a single play:1 in the kitchen :)

the more i lok at them the better they get

Tunein is something i have never used before but it loks good too

Am i better getting 2 * Play:1 or a single play 5

Sonos is no pure audiophile stuff, but still really really good.

Even the Play 1 has great sound. They're surprisingly loud and solid-sounding. The Play 3 is also worth a consideration. You should go to a store and try them out and hear for yourself. The Play 5 is a loud, big speaker. A lot of people would be perfectly happy with the 3. You can also always start with one and add another, that's the beauty of it. I don't know how big your house is, but do you really need stereo in your kitchen and bedroom? I have a single speaker in my kitchen and I'm perfectly happy with it.

Two Play 1 speakers gives you stereo. A single play 5 gives you heavier/bigger sound.

Here's how I would set it up:

Living room: soundbar + 2xPlay 5 with maybe the subwoofer

Bedroom: Play 3 or 1 (one or two)

Kitchen: Play 3 or 1 (one or two)

Ok so what i was thinking was

In living room

2*PLAY:1, Soundbar for the TV and the Sonos Sub

In bedroom

I think will start with a single PLAY:1 and then see how that goes, if its not great then maybe move the Single PLay:1 into the Kitchen and get a play3

My sister and brother-in-law went with Sonos for their main TV not in the theater room.  They have a ~ 70" Samsung 4K, great TV, but wanted some surround for the TV and the ability to listen to their music from their iPhone(s).  But they wanted to go with a minimalistic approach since it was the main room of the house.
I can tell you from a surround sound aspect - either they dont have everything config'd right or that stuff is absolute garbage.  It sounds horrid.  But take that with a grain of salt because I am comparing it to my parents' theater room which cost more than most people's cars.  But when over @ my sister's house, we tried to watch a blu-ray of Man of Steel and it was garbage. :/
