Wells is a jerk! He's out of shape and has a bad attitude. I don't care how good he is I would not take him. As for what Catnip alluded to as Maddux going to the Padres, I think Maddux is a leader but is definately past his prime. I question the way that the Padres are building their team. Look for young talent. Don't bank on these two bring success.

you are right to question it. the padres have been "rebuilding" with young talent for the last 5 years - since the 1998 trip to the World Series. Many fans have lost interest and with them moving into a new ballpark, they want to be competitive NOW, not later. this move and the potential maddux signing will benefit san diego next year, but by 2006 they'll be right back in the cellar.

I liked the 98 Padres. They were led by one of my favourite third basemens Ken Caminiti. He was a great leader and helped the team gel. They need more players like him and less like Wells.

eh, he was ok. he had just joined the team when i met him 3 other braves in a restaurant in st louis close to the ballpark one day. the other 3 players were very friendly, but caminiti wasnt friendly at all, wouldnt even sign an autograph because he said he was eating, even though they hadnt even placed their drink orders yet. on the field, he was a valuable asset that season, but any interaction i have with a player, and how i see them treat other fans plays a major role in my opinion of him. i probably put more into it than most people, but being friendly with the fans is the least these guys can do

I totally agree. And I did not know he was a jerk. To me if a guy is a great player and great to the fans then that makes them a complete athelete. There job is not only to play a sport but to entertain the fans. Making them happy is crucial and sells.

yeah not all fans share the same unconditional love for their teams that i do, a lot of fans have to be won over by winning and outreach from the players. tom glavine was probably the worst i ever saw when it came to fan relations, but he did a lot on the field

Not all fans share the unconditional love for their team as you or I would? The majority of people are bandwagon jumpers. They rag while the team is garbage and cheer when they do well. That's sports. Get use to it because you and I are few and far between.

 David Wells will be a huge bust. He'll pout that he's not on the Yankees, and be 'injured' most of the year. See: 2002 White Sox

Disagree. Wells got tired of the Yankees as they got tired of him. He always puts a good K/BB together and his stuff is still quite good. He wont win 20 games but he will win a much neede 13-15 with a solid ERA. Padres offense can put up some numbers. Not sold on Greene just yet but a half-season could help him and Lawrence/Peavy are a good 1-2
