Flasher
Hi everyone, I want to try Linux but I have a slow dial-up connection so I want to find a Linux distro that I could download... And it must have a visual interface... Thanks in advance. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/127938-small-linux-distro/ Share on other sites

krmathis
Maybe you find a Linux User Group near you. I guess they could help you out. Or you could go to your local shop and look for a Linux Magazine with an included CD? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/127938-small-linux-distro/#findComment-1539530 Share on other sites
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 1, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 1, 2004 Or you could go to your local shop and look for a Linux Magazine with an included CD? Good advice! Don't forget the *best* bookstore option: Buy a book that teaches you, and has the CDs (borrow from a friend, or have a broadband friend download or contact a local Linux Users Group were also GREAT recommendations!) MulletRobZ
If you want the installation to take less than 50 MB, get Knoppix! :p That doesn't require installation, just a CD Boot! :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/127938-small-linux-distro/#findComment-1541633 Share on other sites

If their complaint is that they don't want to have to download it over 56k modem, Knoppix isn't gonna help much.. ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/127938-small-linux-distro/#findComment-1541652 Share on other sites
splatnix
Another option is to hit up a University near you. While I don't know WHERE in Europe you are, it's always a possibility. Since I've got GPRS at home, downloading wasn't an option (200MB/month). A quick stop by the Computer Science department at one of the Uni's in Budapest was all I needed to get updated Slackware isos. I just had to bring the blank CDs and they were more than happy to help out. LUGs, Universities, books with CDs, and friends with broadband are your best possible venues. If you want to do Dial-Up, trust me, downloading a full ISO isn't all THAT painful.
