Good to see McLaren up the time sheets.

I thought RB expected to do a bit better here, maybe on par with Ferrari, looks like they're still a little off the pace, but lets see what FP2 and 3 bring.

Agreed I was pleasantly surprised! Maybe they'll make it into Q3 as well for once.

Man of the race: Kimi Räikkönen

Reject of the race: Max Verstappen, for his overly defensive moves against KR.

Alonso deserves some credit for finishing 7th in every session.

Mr Consistent.

Overall not a bad race though, good to see RB being able to actually put some level of pressure on Merc even if it didn't last all race, some good battles between RB and Ferrari and Alonso managing to keep FI and Williams behind (share reliability is still a bit iffy with Jensons retirement).

Though I'd contest reject of the race as Palmer for such a good overtake and solid position only to spin it.

Nah, the real reject of the race is the FIA's radio restrictions.

(Or if it has to be a driver, Kvyat for speeding in the pitlane.)

Looks like radio is back in full force. Back to 2014 rules perhaps where anything goes... just caught a bit on FP1 with Christian Horner talking about the meeting with Jean Todd.

Formula 1 halo: Bernie Ecclestone says it will not be introduced in 2017

Quote

Formula 1 bosses have voted against introducing the 'halo' head protection system next season.

The strategy group of Bernie Ecclestone, six leading teams and Jean Todt, president of governing body the FIA, decided it needed more work.

But the FIA said some form of increased head protection would be introduced for the 2018 season.

F1 commercial boss Ecclestone said it was agreed to "look into it in more detail".

er...what a stupid idea.

Yeh, I mean I don't really like the design, but rather that for a year (everyone gets the same one, i.e. safety over performance) then 2018 teams can develop they're own, or the aeroscreen and/or other options can be developed over the 2017 season.

Well, lets just hope there aren't any avoidable injuries next year.
