your router's hardware-based firewall & your window's firewall is enough - those software-based ones are pointless

True, but I would also use GlassWire ( so router + windows + glasswire )

Glasswire shows you all outgoing connections and where they are going. Which can be were usefull to

spot suspicious activity.

ZoneAlarm ... brings back some memories of dial-up and then first experience with cable internet (without a router). :)

But I agree with T3X4S.  Windows + Router = no need to pay for firewall software.

Windows Firewall + Router

Windows Defender + Common Sense

That's all you need unless you don't trust yourself with a computer. Any random, potentially unsafe .exe, run it in a VM.

If you are behind a router, I really don't see the point of having anything other then build in Firewall

GONE are the days when Win XP computer would be infected with 10 different things before you can open the browser to download protection software, if you just plug in.

pretty much most internets are behind a router, and the even the plug in jacks are on the networks that have their own protection.

Woohoo !!  People finally agree with me about this topic !  Used to get blasted when I said software based addon firewalls were pointless (win7 days)

Im just before my time is all :D

Your hardware router/firewall will be fine for the average Joe, provided that it's an IPv4 only router or a modern IPv4/v6 router.

Now, there's one situation where you can have a router that supports IPv6,  doesn't have a firewall on the IPv6 interface and the IPv6 interface is set to automatic. Up until now this wasn't a big deal. However, some ISP's are turning on IPv6, and you may suddenly find yourself on the Internet with only your software firewall.  This is rare, but will become more common as more ISPs enable IPv6.

No need for third-party software to achieve this.

From a command prompt      netstat -a

I use this firewall (the free version), although it's not really a firewall itself, just for seeing what what outgoing things there are. It works with the built in windows firewall, but actually alerts you to connections! I should say I use this when I do actually have it installed! Otherwise, as most have stated, router and windows firewall should be enough. It does work on Windows 10.

Wanna bet  tell me 1 that doesnt

Haven't EVER had a firewall crash my system, although Zone Alarm was a total POS that caused major slow downs after they got bought out and bloated.

Cisco ASA, pfSense, Smootwall, IPCop.

edit - Ohhhhh You mean Windows ones, Zone Alarm (back in the day) and more recently. Not my choice but symantec endpoint firewall

Take your pick :-p

3rd party firewall = false sense of security + using for wrong reasons

if anything a firewall on a machine inside a private network is more for blocking stuff going out than in.  all the in's used for malicious activity are now going over legit ports.  firewall =/ av
