I wrote a comment on an article on the insider builds on things I wanted to see in the next versions. My short list for me (I hope MS reads these) are as follows:

1. Tabs in Explorer

2. OneDrive placeholders returned

3. Windows 8.1 gestures returned in tablet mode

4. A redesign of tablet mode. On my Sp3 I do not even bother using it as it basically just takes away colors and makes win32 apps full screen. I want a Windows 8.1/RT like experience in tablet mode including re-organizible start menus in full screen (ignore the haters MS they have their non tablet modes!)

5. Please please please do more QA and fix the bugs! It is what is keeping my desktop Windows 8.1 at the time being as I keep finding different issues 4th time in a row attempting to upgrade. -Eg. names cut short c:\users\ti instead of c:\users\full name. Windows update failing, Drivers for Samsung SSD replaced by MS sata making pc non bootable!

6. Fix Windows Updates back into categories and let home users pick security updates only. Windows update is a nightmare and most geeks I know have to disable it and get hacked otherwise their pcs will mysteriously stop working

7. Nested virtualization in Hyper-V. I can finally kill off and uninstall VMWare Workstation 11 as I have to dual boot to use Windows Server 2012R2 Hyper-V because hyper-V can't run hyper-V inside itself for these labs like VMware can.

8. Please fix all the GUI inconsistencies. Hamburger menus, web apps menus, and win32 menus. Yuck. Finish porting the control panel to PC Settings so we do not need 2 or 3 of everything. Right now I still had to use the old fashioned control panel to fix the bug above as pc settings didn't support adding a 2nd user account unless it was a hotmail ... face palm

What does everyone else want in the next build of Windows 10.1?

1. Dynamic Playlists for Movies & TV & Groove Universal App i.e. right-click in Explorer and add to now playing playlist as you can do with WMP.

2. Bugs with Universal Apps and video drivers fixed, particularly Edge. Constant driver has stopped responding issues, mostly with Edge

3. Utilize DX12 for everything, not just games, i.e. Excel/PowerPoint

4. Right-click folder to open all, in Edge Favorites

5. Jump lists for Universal apps pinned to taskbar

6. Native highly optimized Windows NVMe driver

7. For Xbox One - DVR capability for live TV

8. When streaming Xbox to PC, Live TV will often not play if Xbox is connected to HDMI TV and TV is off - fix

9. Capital One Universal App - Get them on board!

10. More capable default image editing app, buy Paint.Net and bundle

11. Add upper left corner double-click to close to Universal apps.

My list is simple (in order of important to least important)

1)  Allow me to uninstall any Modern Application that I don't want ... w/o having to go through PS

2)  Allow me to categorize shortcuts in the Start Menu (similar to 7).  I friggin hate the long list of apps/programs.

3)  Quit reverting back to default programs during updates.  Leave my settings intact.

4)  Double click left corner to close Modern Apps

5)  UX consistencies.  I don't care if it is the Control Panel or Settings ... shouldn't really need to have two separate areas to control/modify/etc. Windows settings.  With that said ... if they go all the way to Settings ... do not cut back on features.

6)  I'm fine with security updates being mandatory ... however others shouldn't be (especially drivers).

I'm sure I can come up with more but that is it for now.

Good list! Hopefully MS gets the opportunity to implement the features you suggested in Redstone.

Here is my list:

1. Make file explorer more touch friendly

2. Fix the preview system in the file explorer which is currently tied to default app associations (making an extension based system separate from local apps installed would be a major improvement)

3. Add gestures to Edge

4. Add the ability to group tabs to Edge

5. Add more advanced session management features to Edge (be able to save a session to a file)

6. Give Edge the ability to annotate PDFs

7. Add jump-list support for Edge, Mail, Calendar, etc.

8. Allow Cortana/Windows Search to search emails

9. Add interactive live tiles that allows them to function as mini applets and allow users to pin them on the desktop

10. Allow users to empty recycle bin from the Start screen in tablet mode or through the taskbar

11. Fix a tearing issue related to Task View. Currently if you taskbar is transparent and you have a window underneath it and you switch to Task View you can still see a portion of the window under the taskbar. This is a very minor superficial feature and it can be fixed by making the taskbar opaque when in Task View mode.

12. fix the scrolling taskbar. Right when the taskbar becomes full (after shrinking a bit) you will be presented with arrows that allow you to navigate between rows of open and pinned applications, this can be very cumbersome when in tablet mode especially when you have a small tablet held vertically. Therefore, making the taskbar horizontally scrollable (and adding smooth rubberband physics when in tablet mode) should fix this issue.

13. Make the removable devices and OneDrive menu in the system tray more touch friendly

14. Add more drag and drop support, borderless window support, and window within window support to the Universal Windows Platform

15. Give users the option to view views from Edge and the Movies and TV app in the taskbar (I believe currently this is disabled to reduce system resource utilization and increase battery life on mobile devices, but having the option in the taskbar to view the video for each instance is a nice solutions that allows users to choose).

16. More modern icons throughout the system, especially in the control panel, would be nice.

17. The introduction (perhaps in preview format) of universal replacements to notepad, paint (maybe with a vector drawing option as well), snipping tool, character map and narrator. I should note that I do not want them to replace these win32 apps just yet but I do want them to think of and test replacements for the future.

18. I do not mind automatic updates. However, I share my connection with other members of my household and sometimes bandwidth becomes limited. So I would appreciate an option that would allow me to pause the download of Windows updates so that I can use the computer to browser when bandwidth is limited.

1. Start screen improvements, including a reinstatement of the features included in Windows 8.1 Update.post-483058-0-49792900-1426700657.pngpost-483058-0-89930000-1426700658.png

2. An option to use horizontal scrolling with the expanded Start menu.

3. The semantic file picker, or at least a interface element that works better with touch than the standard open / save dialog box.

4. A reinstatement of the Quiet Hours functionality introduced in Windows 8.1. The version included in Windows 10 apparently only disables notifications from 12:00 A.M. to 6:00 A.M, where the version included in Windows 8.1 was quite customizable—users could set up their own quiet hour intervals and even toggle an option to receive calls while the feature was active.

5. Touch gestures such as swiping in Start menu, Edge, et cetera.

6. An option to enable only the automatic installation of security updates.

7. Work on UI inconsistencies.

There are others, for sure, but I will have to come back to this later to add them.

I like your list but it does leave me with one question. Does Office even utilize a 3D framework like Direct3D. I always assumed that Office was built to use either Direct2D (when run on Windows 7+) or GDI+.

Here is the best way to implement this so the haters won't even notice.

Put all of the Windows 8/RT functionality in just tablet mode and have 10.1 by default go into that screen when the keyboard is removed. It is optional and MS can even include a dialog box with a shortcut to pc settings if anyone actually cares. Desktop users get win 7 like UI and younger users get to have something touch friendly where the app won't minimize when I use my finger on the left side of an app to scroll ... thinks I am minimizing in 10 ugh.

The update issue is very very bad and scares the crap out of XP die... err should say now Windows 7 die hards fearing change. But also legit users. www.maximumpc.com has a rant on it. On a benchmark overnight Gordon came in and viola all his pcs rebooted with Windows update??!

It is 2016 and people leave their pcs on in sleep with their documents open. No update should not without a prompt freaking lose all your work and reboot. Especially if your hardware can get hosed with bad drivers. Samsung knows their stuff more than MS and replacing a sata driver ruins my system with Samsung pro 850s. Also nvidia users got burned if they were the 1st to upgrade last July as a bad driver bricked some systems.

MS needs to address this and I know they are frustrated as many techs tell users to never update which is A TERRIBLE policy! However, the risk to losing work is greater than the security risk. Windows update must adjust accordingly and warn users a few days before an update. Come on MS. Most people use a phone for Facebook and home users really do work in a non corporate environment with their pcs.

Remove all of the spying and big brother nonsense! :shiftyninja:

On a serious note though, the notification bug would be nice to see it fixed and same with "airplane mode:." That one seems hit or miss. Continue to improve touch functionality throughout the entire OS, I understand part of that replies on the application developers but certain areas of Windows are cumbersome with Touch, even on tablet mode. I wish they would nuke the various duplicate applications and settings we have, rather than having a "Metro" settings, why not fix control panel from previous versions to be more touch friendly and enable the touch friendly version of control panel if tablet mode is enabled? I never liked the idea of having the legacy settings available and the new "Metro" settings.

Good question, I don't know the answer. PowerPoint is Awesome as is and more 3D and Video transitions/effects would be awesome.

Dude go youtube and research some of the findings?

MS secretly bought like 500 parked domains to log everything. Network traffic analization shows like freaking 20 domains. Ads get inserted into your login screen and lord help you a virus writter uses this to infect hundreds of millions of pcs.

I was one of the ones like you thought the anti Windows crowd on www.slashdot.org foamed at the mouth and are looking for something to make up a reason why users want to freed from the tyranny of Windows and how Linux is all sooo perfect and never has any bugs are something silly. Lo and behold it is not just bing searches and analytics.

MS should have an opt out for those paying for Windows 10. The pro version should not have it installed at all at least.

Yes they do

Notice on Office 2013 in Word if you hit enter you see a smooth animation of the cursor going to the next line? That is 3d accelerated with aero. DirectX12 ... that won't happen for awhile. Reason being is Windows 7 users not wanting to upgrade not to mention some AMD hardware on Windows 10 does not have drivers that are WDDM 2.0 compliant yet and use directx 11 as a result.

Really you do not need directx12 as all it does is help rendering billions of polygons in 3d mode without as much cpu overhead. All MS does is 2d and a 2 polygon pie chart. Woopoo do no bare metal is needed for something like excel or powerpoint.

There is no difference in quality. Just help when you do very complex scenes

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that. You are right about excel, but I really would like to see some 3D/Video effects for PowerPoint ...

I've given up trying to explain it to them, their minds are made up and nothing will sway them from their beliefs.

Aero Glass.

Ability to have 60 items in jumplist like on Windows 7 and 8.1.

Ability to customize the spacing between rows for context menus, including jumplists.

A compact mode for UI elements including the caption buttons that allow you to shrink the caption buttons to Windows 7-like sizes. I use a mouse, I don't need gigantic close, maximize, minimize buttons. Not all of us are using touchscreens. Some of us still use mice.

The ads you speak of are suggestions--turn them off you don't want them. You think it is an additional attack vector? The recent Mint fiasco shows you no OS is safe from anything.
