Technique
I'm looking at buying a new console & i'm fairly sure it's going to be a PS4 (the slim). What i'm looking to find out is whether you guys think 500GB is ok for a casual gamer? I've done some reading online & it seems to me to be generally gamer heads answering this question with no, you MUST get a 2134786329473289473298TB SSD otherwise it will be unplayable! ....... basically they give advice based on their usage. At the end of the day, i'm a 33 year old guy who works, often 6 day weeks. I don't have the time like i did 15-20 years ago to play for hours & hours on end. Not to mention my wife wouldn't be happy with it if i did, plus i have other things to do also. BUT with that said, i like to play video games now & then. Some evenings, some weekends. I'll generally play things like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Fifa, various racing games, Grand Theft Auto, family games such as the Buzz game (i had on my PS2 - shame it's not available on the PS4). I may get in to some bigger titles, who knows. The bottom line is i'm not going to spend 5+ hours each day playing. I don't mind upgrading the hard drive if it's really advised but at the same time i don't want to go installing a 2TB HDD (i noted little price difference between the 1TB & 2TB) if my drive is only going to be like 250-300GB full. So what's your viewpoints? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1310612-ps4-500gb-the-casual-gamer/ Share on other sites
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted October 5, 2016 Veteran Share Posted October 5, 2016 It's absolutely ok for a casual gamer or even hardcore gamer. Having a larger drive cuts down on the installs / downloads you will have to do, but it's not necessary, only convenient. Further, if you struggle with the 500 GB in future, it is possible to upgrade the PS4 HDD at any time. Instructions here (note that it does not void the warranty) Depicus and Technique 2 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1310612-ps4-500gb-the-casual-gamer/#findComment-597615970 Share on other sites

Most of the games you mentioned are pretty big on the current consoles; FIFA 17, Mortal Kombat XL, and Grand Theft Auto clock in at around 40GB each, so that's more than a quarter of the HDD space taken up by just three games (500GB 465GB drive + ~60GB reserved by the system, so you're left with just over 400GB to play with). Street Fighter V's thankfully a lot smaller at 6GB, and most of the big racing games on the store clock in at around 15-20GB each (DiRT Rally's the exception at 40GB). It does seem to be better than over on the Xbox One, though; I got Halo 5 recently - a physical copy - and it wanted 91GB of space! By far my biggest game ever; blasted the ~65GB GTA V PC version out of the water. Anyway, if those games are all you're interested in, you should still be fine with the standard 500GB drive. If, on the other hand, you're also interested in trying out the games that come up for free on PlayStation Plus each month, you might find yourself deleting other games to make room, and Sony's servers are still a bit slower than Microsoft's and Valve's (although they're still a lot better than the PS3 days), so you might end up spending a good chunk of time waiting. I just skipped all that hassle and bought this 2TB external HDD for £60 around the same time I bought my PS4; I put the original 500GB drive into the enclosure, and now I'm using it to double the storage on my Xbox One, which I kind of needed to do after Halo 5. There's a great guide from Eurogamer on upgrading the drive with that HDD. Technique
Thanks guys. If you were to upgrade then would you go for the 1TB SSHD approach or just the plain old 2TB HDD approach? So what's your viewpoints? The same argument fits the XBOX ONE (or XBOX ONE S, for that matter); the advantage the latter two both have is cross-buy support with Windows 10. The one game that is on all three consoles (DC Universe Online) supports the same account login I have on PC; therefore NO advantage on a specific console. The advantage the S has is future-proofing (which is, in fact, the ONLY advantage)- otherwise, the argument is pretty much moot. If you were to upgrade then would you go for the 1TB SSHD approach or just the plain old 2TB HDD approach? Well, Digital Foundry did a great comparison between HDD, SSHD, and SSD: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-is-it-worth-upgrading-your-ps4-with-an-ssd In a nutshell, there are noticeable improvements to the load times - 13.2% for the SSHD across all the games they tested, and 28.6% for the SSD - but they vary wildly from game to game, and they still recommend sticking to the plain old 2TB HDD approach, mainly out of cost. If you're happy to have the small speed boost over the extra TB, then go for the SSHD.
