At least 5 dead, 8 hospitalized after shooting at Ft. Lauderdale airport

DEVELOPING   Five people are dead and a shooting suspect is in custody Friday after a lone gunman opened fire at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida without saying a word, witnesses and authorities say.

At 2:30 p.m. local time, the TSA said there was another active shooter at the airport and that all terminals were closed.

The suspect in the first shooting was identified as Esteban Santiago, Fla. Sen. Bill Nelson told reporters. He said Santiago was carrying a military ID, but did not elaborate.

Eight people were rushed to hospitals, the Broward County Sheriff said. The city's mayor said there was only one shooter involved in the first incident.

"It was very surreal," John Schlicher, a witness, told Fox News. "He did not say a word." He described the shooter as a slender man with dark hair, likely in his 30s, wearing a Star Wars T-shirt.

While speaking to Shepard Smith live on Fox News, Schlicher said he heard crews ordering  passengers to take cover. He spoke over the phone while ducked down on the floor.

TV flow...

Estiban Santiago emptied 3 (?) mags then sat down, waiting to be arrested.

Second shooter report may be a duplicate report of Santiago.

Port Authority of NY & NJ going on alert.

<sigh> Sad that that is like the first thing anyone asks these days. Pretty soon mass shootings won't even be reported.

Another report that Santiago was a passenger on an Air Canada flight who had a firearm in his checked baggage. He picked up his baggage, removed the weapon and started shooting.

It creates the ability to predict patterns and then prevention of such patterns. Any all all information is important, these are 2 very important details today. Don't be slow.

How can you predict a pattern by jumping to conclusions before knowing facts? I specifically said "the first thing", not "we should ignore patterns" Sorry if that is too slow for you :-(

Question: How did a guy Estoban Santiago, fly from Canada with a gun in the bag, get past TSA???

update: FOX news states Chip lamarca  Ft lauderdale politician, states Santiago took the gun through flights in canada and check it in, then pick it up at the end of the flight. Took the bag, went to the bathroom, loaded it and came out shooting

Canada allows for people to check firearms in checked luggage and pick it up at the end of the flight.

Who was jumping to a conclusion? Can you quote part and the person? I checked again and still can't see it. Asking details about the most glaring things and easiest to verify are the things investigators ask. Example: was it a white/black/brown man, was he wearing street clothes, jeans, a headscarf ect. All these things SHOULD be asked.

In any event, my comment was more general than specific anyway.
